The Unknown Poster Posted March 30, 2016 Author Report Share Posted March 30, 2016 Details on the player: The left shooting left winger was the teammate of Jets' prospect Erik Foley and is the brother of Vancouver Canucks' defender Chris Tanev. http://jetsnation.ca/2016/3/30/winnipeg-jets-sign-brandon-tanev-to-entry-level-contract Tanev has been watched by NHL teams for somewhile, including Darren Dreger commenting that about a dozen teams were looking at the player. The winger was passed on the draft, likely due to size issues. According to the Canucks' development camp roster in 2011, Tanev was 5'10 and 150 lbs as a 19-year-old. It's understandable why teams would avoid a player at that size. While an undersized scoring forward in the CHL may be drafted by teams (like the Jets' own Nic Petan), Tanev was playing in tier-two junior like the OJHL and BCHL. Tanev numbers won't wow anyone, with 77 points scored in 149 collegiate games over four seasons, he does have some scoring ability. The winger's 15 goals this season was tied with Mark Jankowski for team lead and he came second in team shots on goal per game. Tanev pulled this off while playing on the second line and power play unit for likely the second best team in Hockey East. The two-way forward passes almost all the check marks, including a growth spurt pulling him up to 6'0 and 180 lbs. Tanev is known for his decision making, in making plays that are conductive to his coach trusting him in defensive situations like the penalty kill. He is not scared to get his nose dirty along the boards or in front of the net either. Tanev's best asset though is his speed. While he won't win any races against Kyle Connor or Nikolaj Ehlers, Tanev boasts a pretty good top gear which could make him an effective penalty killer at the NHL level. Could be a simple depth signing or an under-appreciated signing for now. He might end up a solid mid to low six player. A more talented Thorburn perhaps. The fact upwards of 12 teams were pitching offers bodes fairly well that there might be something here. I wonder what Chevy promised... better than average chance to play in the NHL next season? It is very interesting he signed here. Assuming Connor is here next year there is a big log jam in our bottom 6 next year. Can't see Chevy promising NHL with who we have in the queue. He'll be a RFA in the summer. Yeah thats interesting. It gets him a paycheque and signing bonus right now. But I dont really see the point. Jets retain his rights so he's surely re-signing with the Jets. Perhaps it was just easier to sign today and continue talks on a longer term deal later. Getting an honest look and some NHL pay before the season is over were also good incentives to sign. Where does he project? 3rd line? 4th line? But listening to people talk about him, he might be a 3rd liner. But maybe an everyday solid 4th liner who gets extra minutes on Special Teams. Improves the Jets' bottom six. And with Lemieux coming, that also improves the Jets' bottom six. We might see the biggest improvement from that area next season. With Lemiuex, Tanev, Dano, depth might not be an issue for the team.
