Around the NHL

Catch all thread for discussing other NHL teams/news.

Up first:  Pittsburgh Penguins, my secondary team to cheer for.

I guess their worst start since Sid's rookie year could be because of their lousy defense.  Or bad coaching.  Or Kessel.

But in reality its because I took Fleury in my pool every year for 10 years until last year when I was fed up, he has his best year ever and then I took him this year and now he sucks.

But really, whats the deal?  They might be the first to can their coach.

I could see Colorado making a run at him via offer sheet. Pushes up the Jets salaries and they may pry him out. I guess it depends what kind of relationship the GM has with Chevy. You don't make friends with offer sheets!

If not Colorado, I could see another club taking a gamble on him. Maybe even to push through a trade.

Not at all surprised.  Tis the season.

Tsn puts out a list every year of trade bait and like none get traded

Real trade alert

The Hawks purge begins.  Good trade for Carolina.

The Detroit Red Wings have signed centre Riley Sheahan to a two-year contract worth $2.075 million per season. Sheahan, 24, was set to become a restricted free agent.

The Jets should have made that deal...a cap dump of about 4m for one year and you get a quality forward for a 2nd and 3rd round pick.

Ya cuz the jets need more forwards for sure.

Already have Dano...

A team can offer sheet trouba but it doesn't mean trouba will sign that offer sheet.

Besides who is to say Trouba isn't signed by July 1st. Sounds like he wants to be here.  So he'd have to sign an offer sheet if he got one which he won't because offer sheets don't happen very often especially not to teams who have lots of cap space to match.

Mackinnon is an rfa also. Colorado offer sheets trouba. Jets offer sheet Mackinnon.  Nobody will offer sheet trouba tho cuz everyone knows the jets have the cap space to match. Also... the team offering the offer sheet would have to overpay so much it's just not worth it for them.

The LA Kings have named Anze Kopitar captain, replacing Dustin Brown.

Interesting.  Brown being bought out?

Sami Vatanen signs 4 years 19 million to stay in Anaheim.  Surprised here for sure. Strong rumors that he was available but guess not.

Looking more and more likely that Myers to Edmonton could be realistic and the only option oilers have left to improve the right handed D side

Too much if you ask me...I'm surprised too as I figured he would be the  odd man out and you don't think they would trade him if they just signed him.

Trouba is not getting $5 mill a season...

Really depends on term.

I agree. Jets will say $4m based on youth and play. Agent will say $6m based on projections and ceiling and buying up free agency. Meet in the middle to a degree. Make cash lower for he first half and higher the second

I'll say 7 years at $38m

I think Trouba pushes for a 6 year or less.

Vatanen just signed for 4.75m per so I would guess that Trouba will be north of 5m per.

I would give Trouba 48m over 8 years and Scheif 55m over 8 years.

Offers to our RFAs if I were GM...

Lowry gets 2m and 2.25m over two years...Hutch (we need a goalie for the expansion draft) would get 1m per for two years. Armia would be offered 1.5m per for two years. Lipon would be offered 850k per for two years.

Tanev? I dunno.....what do you offer a guy at that age that has only played a couple of games. I think he will be a really good PKer and 4th liner for the team but not for the 2016-2017 season. Does he have to clear waivers to be sent down?

Pretend you are Trouba's agent and tell me why he is worth more than Vatanen.

7 years 38.5 million for Trouba seems fair. 5.5 AAV

I guess if I'm Troubas agent I'd say look at the fancy stats... they are better. Age. The fact he was saddled with Stuart.  The fact that both enstrom and Myers make similar

"His numbers are good while dragging around an anchor and shoot up when paired with someone that can actually play the game. He has been playing against the other team's better players and is arguably the best defensive D man on the team. His numbers also would be better if he had more PP time. He is a starting 2nd pairing D man at 22. He has never once complained in public about anything and has ALWAYS stated that he wants to play here. This is a player that could be an assistant captain and leader of  your team for years to come.

If you do bridge him I will advise him to go through arbitration after that 2 year contract and the Jets will eventually lose him to free agency in no more than 2 years after that. If you bridge him and he plays really well, you won't get him long term and  you won't get him for under 6m.

Also, you don't have to worry about him in 2 years when Ehlers, Lemieux, Morrissey Petan, De Leo, Kostalek, and Comrie are up as RFAs and Little is up as an UFA."

If Trouba gets bridged for 2 years (not gonna happen) and plays lights out paired with Buff or Toby, what is he going to want per year after that contract (when a LOT of other contracts are up)? Get him locked up now and even 6m per in only 4 years will seem like  a bargain.

How'd I do? Honeslty?
