Portis looks way older and has been around much longer in the cfl than Marve has. This is going to be marves 2nd season. Portis was with the argos for a bit too. Two TD's are better than 2 FG's.

Portis looks way older and has been around much longer in the cfl than Marve has. This is going to be marves 2nd season. Portis was with the argos for a bit too. If Portis just looks a bit better than Marve which he doesn't that's bad cuz he has a few years cfl experience already. Marve looked better than brohm? ? 6 of 8 is better than 4 of 8. The difference tho brohm at 6 of 8 is running the o how it should be. Marve is improvising out there lots it seems. Total chaos really. Entertaining but not sustainable but Marve Def has a role as the third stringer.

Although I'd still rather have Marve then Portis.  Portis just doesn't look comfortable out there.  I'd rather have someone who at least has confidence in himself.

Why so much extrapolation of incredibly small bodies of work? Do we really think decisions should be based off of 10 snaps?

 

It's never as simple as "Marve scored a TD, Portis didn't" and while I prefer Marve easily over Portis, there's an entire further depth of reasoning as to why. 

 

Yes, Marve is exciting. No, that's really not all that important.

Yes, he has shown to be capable of making something out of nothing. Unfortunately, he has not proven himself capable of taking something given to him. He hasn't shown the ability to make throws at a high level of consistency from the pocket. But he seems like he is aware of it and is going to take steps to head in the right direction with that aspect of his game.

Yes, he has put points on the board in awkward situations. No, that's not going to continue once teams start to gather film on him and are able to prepare for what he brings to the table. Not until his work from inside the pocket improves.

 

Fact is we're looking at it and trying to argue 4 of 9 vs 6 of 8 and that's not what the debate is at all. What was their process? How was their footwork? Regardless of an incompletion or a completion, was it the right throw to make? A nice throw? Did they read the coverage properly? Are you confident that they make the best play at a higher frequency than their competition? It's not as simple as "two touchdowns is better than two field goals" - granted it is, but how was each scenario achieved? What happens if an Argo safety blew a coverage on one of Marve's plays and Brohm had drives stall because of missed assignments by his receivers? It's never just about evaluating the results in training camp - the coaches are going to evaluate the process.

 

I'm confidently of the mind that Marve stays over Portis, but I'm not sold on him over Brohm yet because the simple fact is he's likely not able to be as good of a fit within our offensive scheme until he shows more progress in the pocket. He needs to be able to produce without being on the run so that he can be MORE productive going forward when he IS on the run. Otherwise, he'll quickly become an easily defended one trick pony.

As it stands cutting Marve in favour of Portis would be a terrible football decision. Marve is much better right now.

Is he? I didn't watch the game but people who were watching the stream said he was inconsistent.

I trust the coaching staff whatever they do will be the right choice.

 

Inconsistent maybe, but he was still more effective than anyone not named Willy. 6.9 yards per play in which he was involved and 14 points scored overall. No matter how you look at it, Marve has been able to move the offense and put points on the board on a consistent basis. It would be absolutely foolish to cut the guy.

BTW I'm not saying Marve is anything like Goltz.

He might be inconsistent but he did some things and was more effective than the other back ups so let's not cut the guy

Good grief! Exaggerate much. Portis is only 1-1/2 years older than Marve and this will be his 3rd season in the CFL. Marve has more game experience than Portis, btw.
