Rider fan coming on here in peace! Hoping for a couple bits of advice on getting to the game on Thursday in the easiest manner possible.

We are staying downtown at the Holiday Inn on Portage and Colony.

I was contemplating cabbing it from the hotel to McPhillips and taking the bus there and back and then catching a cab back to the hotel (cabs are usually plentiful at casinos right?).

Given my location, can anyone let me know if this seems like a wise plan or if I am missing out on a better option?

Don't bother with the casino, that's in the wrong direction and will cost you a fortune. You can take a cab directly from your hotel or take the bus. Here's a route for you.

You could always walk to the Balmoral bus stop and just bus directly.

That's probably a $15-$20 cab ride each way to and from the casino! 

 

Jump on a 160 or 161 (To U of M) bus, it stops all over downtown within a couple minute walk of your hotel.  That will take you right to the stadium.  They add a ton of buses on gameday on that route in the couple hours before and after the game.  You have to pay $2.55 on the way to the game, it's free on the way back.

 

Balmoral Station is close to your hotel, MTS Centre too.  Those routes stop there.

 

And if you want to gamble, go to the Shark Club.

Did the downtown hotel to the stadium thing for the Edmonton game. The 161 express from downtown was super easy and faster than I expected.

Alas, I don't think there's a 161 express back from the stadium, we had to take a 160 that stopped a bunch of times but still got us home in 20-30 min.

Fair enough! I'll do my best. If the "trouncing" starts early I'll just head over to that rum hut and check it out.

One other related question, are there any pubs/restaurants downtown that do bus rides to the game? Something like $20 gets you a beer/ride/burger etc?

Yeah on the north side of Portage iirc.

360 Colony Street is the Holiday Inn Location technically.

I personally Recommend Option 1

 

The 60 bus.. You leave at about 527, walk 4 minutes to Vaughn, Westbound.. Beside the "BAY".. CATCH that.. you get there and walk 7 minutes to IGF. 

 

That one gets you there at about 610 ish.. I say ish cuz it depends on traffic.

Yeah, besides the Holiday Inn which has been there for ages, the Army Surplus store has been gone for several years -- that spot is now part of the U of W, and also houses a Stella's.

(By the way, Bingo_Arms, you should definitely go eat at Stella's. It's across the street from your hotel and super good!)

Silver Heights Restaurant (2169 Portage) has a bus that goes to the stadium for $20. That includes a burger, a beer and the trip to the stadium and back. I'm a regular there. Owner, staff and patrons are awesome.

Nowhere near downtown, but well worth the busride. Hope you have a good time whatever you choose to do!

Think Boston Pizza does. There is one not far from the MTS centre.

No need to take a restaurant shuttle.  Taking the 161/160 is by far the easiest way to get to/from the game, and it stops just outside your hotel.

 

There's lots of restaurants downtown, including a number of restaurants just off Graham*, the street that the 160/161 goes down through downtown.  Prior to the game a 161 will go by every 15 minutes, plus 160s will go by as well.  Both will drop you off right in front of the stadium.

 

Cost is $2.55 there, free on the way home.

 

* Rudy's, Shark Club, Boston Pizza, Elephant & Castle, Tavern United, Earls, Carbone are some examples that are right on the 160/161 route or within a block.

Or if you mean transit-wise…they are both express buses that go to the Uni. The 161 is the Super Express (less stops)
