The TV Thread

Second season of Orange is the New Black launched today.

Anyone else into this?

I have to admit to being a bit of a TV/movie-phile.  I generally buy Blu-Rays when there's a movie I want to see rather than just watching it on PPV or In-demand (I like to collect).

Premium TV has really been leading a creative resurgence in recent years, probably dating back to The Sopranos.  Its nice that Netflix has become a legitimate competitor for HBO (which puts out some really great shows like Sopranos, Deadwood, Boardwalk Empire, True Blood etc).

House of Cards was tremendous.

While cable channels like AMC are getting in on the act, I annoys me a bit.  The Walking Dead would be so much better on Netflix or HBO where they could truly appeal to adults (HBO passed on The Walking Dead when Thomas Jane was attached).

As for Orange, it took me a few episodes to get into last season but Im looking forward to banging out a few episodes tonight.

As an aside, for you Trekies, it was recently the 20th anniversary of the finale of TNG, one of the best Series' Finales in TV history.

GEEZ the CW won't say no to anything, I mean sure it was announced that Crazy Ex and Jane will end though next year. I'm surprised they are renewing Dynasty even though it's ratings poison, but then again I think the CW cares more about telling a story than about ratings

Not really surprised about both.

Disappointed they dropped the Lewisnki/Clinton story.  I would looking forward to that.  If they wanted to be fair to Lewinski, they could have brought her on as a consultant.  I guess maybe she didnt want to take part.

Crime Story has been a bit troubled.  I hope it continues.  The first two seasons were great.  Katrina is next.  There are plenty of crimes they could cover.  Casey Anthony would be an interesting one.

Lewinsky has become a victim all of a sudden and the producer seemed to want to take the story her way. Surprised she not taking the cash.

Well she was a victim in a way.  Consensual but major power disparity between her as an intern and Clinton as the President.

Netflix is buying a billboard company and increasing their marketing budget for original programming by $2billion.

Fierce completion. just wait til Disney launches.

I was just thinking about the inherit advantage that network TVs have over Netlix and streaming services in terms of advertising. Unless I'm in Netflix, I'm not seeing their product.

They did try but looks like they're building their own. Disney might buy Sky News, which could eat up their capital.

At $100 billion valuation, not sure they could afford it.

besides why would Disney want to own netflix, I mean most of the original content isn't exactly family friendly, but then again......

They own lots of non-family content but they do sanitize lots of what they buy.

If Netflix was valued at 100b it would have been sold quick. NF is about 200+ now so I hear.

Makes me realize what a bargain Disney got  lucasfilm for.

Netflix is valued at 100 bn....  it also carries a lot of debt and is nowhere near generating revenue.    I don't see a tonne of companies wanting to buy into that.

It makes way more sense for Disney to go on their own.

Netflix spends a lot but is seen in a very positive light.  They are spending a lot now to increase original programming. And they keep increasing subscriptions too, in a market with a huge upside.

At 100 million subs paying $10 a month, there revenue is ridiculous.
