A car crashed through a Garden City home early Sunday, nearly taking down the entire property.

Homeowner Jeffrey Bannon says it's lucky no one was home at the time and no one was injured. But it was a jarring phone call to get at 1 a.m.

"We were returning from Buck Pierce's wedding social, and we got the call on the way home that our house was on fire," Bannon says.

But the alarm company didn't have it quite right.

"When we arrived we saw the fire truck from down the street … when you got closer you realize the alarm company didn't say anything about a van in our living room."

It was six feet away from driving straight through to the other side of the home.

Now Bannon, the Winnipeg Blue Bomber director of retail and promotions, is just waiting.

"We had to wait for police to get the man (the driver) out of there before we were allowed in," he says. The driver was treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

 

"A couple hours later the tow truck pulled the van out."

There's extensive damage to Bannon's living room, dining room, kitchen, structural damage to the garage and possible damage to the home's foundation.

"He literally took out the wall between the living room and the kitchen. He was six feet away from going through the entire house," Bannon says. "I've never seen anything like it."

He hopes to be allowed back in later Sunday to get clothes and his kids' homework to bring back to the in-laws; the children, eight and 11, also weren't home at the time.

"The sad part is, if we would have been home, I wouldn't be talking to you right now. Because we sit on the couch — that he destroyed — to watch TV," he says.

"But at the end of the day, the driver walked away, we walked away. It's just stuff that can be replaced."

Bannon hopes to meet with his insurance agent Monday to discuss a damage estimate. In the meantime emergency cleanup crews have fortified the house and cut off power.

Police are not currently contemplating charges.

"Whether it was road conditions, a medical situation, I don't know, but I don't see any indication at all of alcohol being involved," said Const. Eric Hofley, a police spokesperson.

I saw the photos Jeffrey had posted on Facebook last night. Thank goodness no one was home. 

No doubt that's insane...   I'd be curious to find out how someone could do this.  I'm guessing the driver had some kind of medical situation and blacked out.

Crazy that I saw him at the wedding social last night about ten minutes before he left and then he comes home to that.

How can someone NOT be charged for something like that? Medical condition or not. Like, oh no problem. You tore up a guy's house with your car. Not a big deal.

Easily,  I knew a girl who suffered a seizure while driving down Lag and she blacked out and went off road and smashed into a building.  She had zero indications prior to this incident of her having any kind of medical problems.  It could happen to anybody. 

 

She was not charged and it wouldn't make any sense to charge her since this would be considered "an act of god".

Give me a break, Brandon. Yeah, I tell ya, when I said disturbing, it was just a hugely blatant, horrible, intolerant & insensitive statement. How could I have said such a thing? Sheesh. You sure like to twist things around. C'mon, you don't find it disturbing that Bannon's family could have all been killed if they were home??? Maybe next time it's you or your family crossing the street. Or watching tv at home. The Bannons were so fortunate that no one was home at the time.

There are people driving around with issues they either know or don't know about. That is what is disturbing. Any one of us, a family member or a friend could be killed tomorrow by someone like that. That's my point.

That is crazy.  Very happy that no one was hurt though.  Bannon's an awesome dude.

Simply, people with known & unknown health issues. That something bad can happen behind the wheel just like that. I'd be interested in knowing if speed had anything to do with what happened.

Don't say crazy as some people here will take offense to that description. That's worse than saying disturbing.

All I meant was I found what happened disturbing. And that it could happen to someone without warning behind the wheel & cause a catastrophy where innocent people could get killed. 

Glad to hear everyone is o.k. Houses can be fixed, major pain in the ass but that's the way she goes sometimes.
