It’s pretty destroyed. I dunno. There’s lots of suspicious characters around there at that time. Dude sleeps on the bus bench near by. It was probably him.

Driving through downtown today for the first time in a few months... noticed many more buildings have been boarded up and are for lease.   The tent city near Disraeli/Main has grown to a massive size with everything in that area now covered in graffiti.   I saw a guy watering the streets with his home made apple juice from the boulevard near P & M.    I saw maybe 10 normal working folks waiting for the bus or crossing streets and about 30 drunk folks stumbling around.   Driving by Portage Place with a huge chunk being torn down and the beautiful park/water feature across the street  still torn up and still being demolished.... feels like the aftermath of a warzone.

I can't believe how far gone our downtown is.   The mayor should be in crisis mode trying to do something with it.   I'd never in a million years ever let my daughter or wife set foot in that area without some sort of protection.   It's realllllllllly bad now.

When I was a kid, I used to go down by myself and I was like 12. Would not send a 12 year old down to do so now.

I used to take the bus and go to downtown Winnipeg by myself and I was 12. Nothing dirty. Now when the SI swimsuit issue came.....

So it looks like that Strip mall where Peavy mart was on my end is getting a makeover (and maybe getting an extra unit?)

Home Hardware maybe?

Another bus driver assaulted tonight near Springfield and Gateway.    At this point nobody is going to want to drive or take transit in Winnipeg.   Zero % chance that I'd let my kids ride public transit these days.

We have the same problem on the C Trains in Calgary. Mostly at the platforms at the C Train stations where assaults, murders, robberies & drug deals go down. The problem is the catch & release justice system we have now. Politicians keep talking about public safety but never do anything.

Shopping malls can be a premium place for renting.   I've known a few people who have had stores and kiosks in malls and a place that is desirable (St Vital) is very expensive.   Renting a space in a strip mall can be 1/4 of the price.

So not extortion or drug addict from the looks of things...

Man charged with arson in multiple fires at Winnipeg restaurants, constituency offices | CBC News

22 counts of arson and other things:
Arson with Disregard for Human Life
Arson Causing Damage to Property x 13
Mischief Under $5,000/Obstruct in Enjoyment x 4
Break Enter and Commit Arson – Place x 2
Break and Enter with Intent – Place x 2

Not sure if it the same guy or not but age & location fit - on Facebook, there's a guy with the same name who is a bit of a Point Douglas white knight.  He was pretty vocal about not having the safe injection site in that neighborhood so I wonder if the arson locations weren't targeted.  He's charged with the fires at the constituency offices of Nahanni Fontaine and Bernadette Smith (who is the addictions minister), as well as fires at a provincial treatment center.  Maybe the businesses had shown their support for the idea (or for something else) and got on his s**t list.

well at least they caught the guy I hope he doesn't get bail

With our justice system he will get a reduced sentence with time served and 2 years probation.     That is if we are lucky.

Usually it's released with promise to appear and a very light sentence.
