You've all been to the cocktail party in question. Someone pulls out a deck of cards and puts on a show of prestidigitation and slight of hand. "Pick a card, any card", the magician tells you. Imagine a cocktail party with all the CFL quarterbacks and offensive coordinators in attendance. Gary Etchevery is the lone defensive invitee. He pulls out his deck of cards shuffles them and begins his show. Well you already know what happens. The audience is initially impressed. Eventually as the party wears on everyone gets the trick. For a third of the season GE made chicken salad from chicken feathers. Everyone bought into the stick. You don't need a big aggressive mean DL to disrupt an OL, give me a deck of small quick tweeners, shuffle them up, throw in a undersized linebacking core.....now watch my hands! Don't employ a system, no rules, switch them up, rotate them, shuffle them here there everywhere......watch my hands...... Well he didn't fool Penn and Teller, and it looks like Henry Burris was the last guy at the party to figure it out.

Disappointed, you would expect a young team to improve as the season goes along. We make the same mistakes over and over. Dumb penalties, outrageous play calling, poor tackling, ,,,, did I mention poor tackling? There it is again. And again. Maudie needs a drink

Kenny Ploen hands down. What he brought to the table was smarts. There was no electronic communatin from the sidelines but He read Bud Grants mind. The QB called the plays. However his arm was pathetic. He came to the Bombers as an option QB That was the rage at the time. Jackie Parker, a Bomber rival was another exponent of the roll out option. There were pocket passers, Etchevery, Tripuka, Tobin Rote, come to mind, but the roll out was the bomber bread and butter in his early years. His ball was was wounded duck. But it it got there. Over the years he developed into a competent pocket passer but the threat to run was always there. What I remember most about his game was hs ability ti pick the defense apart in the 4th quarter, it was truly amazing.

Our inability to stop the run is not why we are losing, agreed. However it does keep our offense on the sidelines far too long. More two and outs please. It greatly impacts our field position. Starting deep in your own end all the time is not an offensive advantage. Yes this years team handles it better than last years totally inept excuse for a team. It is not a problem that can be addressed completely this year. But you can bet the off season recruiting will reflect this inadequacy. No they will never admit it is a problem. That would focus attention on the schemes, yhe DC and the people recruited to implement the system. Etch will be told to go more conventional. If he doesn't agree I suspect he will be replaced. I also think this years approach is probably a stop gap one anyway. It was a quick fix. Next year it will be easier to recruit both coaches and players. We will not be viewed as the goog ship lollypop but an up and coming force to be reconed with. People want to play for a winner. Recruiting for the offensive line thru FA will shore up the line, plus the draft. A few run stopping beasts can be found thru conventional means.

I didn't say the run D lost the game. if our run d was better and not allow teams to march te field, up and down at will we would have the ball alot more and we would be kicking butt.We are a greatly improved team and will be alot better once we address our inability of stop teamto from running at will. I agree ST lost the game along with some stupid penalties.

Given the o-line depth it is surprising he would be released. Weather it is health or talent he is obviously thought to be expendable. You can bet the bb will be looking at the releases or practice rosters of the other teams. OL don't grow on trees. He would obviously been a backup so they feel that anything but him has more upside.

An import is: (a) A player who has received training in football outside of Canada by having participated as a player in a football game outside of Canada prior to attaining the age of seventeen years. ( A player who has received training in football outside of Canada by having participated in a football game as a player outside of Canada after attaining the age of seventeen years, but who has received no football training in Canada prior to attaining the age of seventeen years.

Clearly under the existing CFL rules he would not qualify as a non import. It raises an interesting legal question. Suppose an individual born in Canada retains dual citizenship. He is trained in football in a US high school and university. Upon graduation he decides to return to Canada to live and work. He would not be allowed to qualify as a non import, and as he wasn't skilled enough to gain employment as an import, he would be unable to follow a career in Canadian Football. One has to wonder if this could be challenged in a court of law on the basis of discrimination. The individual clearly has the talent and ability to be employed in the CFL but the league discriminates on the basis of where the individual was trained. A Canadian individual attends the Wharton School of Business. He sees an ad in the paper from Great West life for an actuary. The add lists the qualification and skills required for the job. The individual applies for the job, and is interviewed for the position. He wows the committee. In every respect he is qualified for the position. Several days later he receives a letter of rejection. In the letter he is told that he was the best candidate for the job. His training was exemplary and the Wharton School of Business turns out highly qualified graduates. However he is turned down on the basis that he has the best qualifications but GWL as a matter of policy, refuses to employ graduates from Wharton because they are too well trained.
