On a per game basis we've given up 22.8 points per game. For comparison sake of points given up per game: Calgary: 13 Edmonton: 16.8 BC: 18.4 Sask: 28 Ottawa: 26.6 Montreal: 28.3 Toronto: 28 Hamilton: 23 If you go by pure points against, which doesn't consider points given up on special teams or the offense, the Bombers are 4th best in the league on a per game basis. Five teams are worse than the Bombers. Need to compare apples to apples.

O'Shea on the running game last night: "If you’re losing a bunch of yards, it’s not Nic Grigsby -- we have to look at the line blocking. But sure, we want to run the ball better. But we came to BC and won. And that’s a tough place to win. However it looks on the stats sheet -- let’s take it for what it is, we won. It’s a tough place."

With Lirim's performance last night, and this season, any chance we eventually lose him to the NFL? Guys who kick 50 yarders consistently can definitely make it in the NFL. I sure hope we can keep him though; he's a beauty. Thoughts?

I agree the running game needs to improve but this isn't all on Grigsby. The OL did a good job in pass protection last night but weren't creating any holes for the run. I expect the run game to improve when Greaves returns to the lineup.

Simply awesome. Is that Lawless?? lol Yep I'm pretty sure it is. Didn't recognize him at first with the shades on.

Simply awesome.

Last two weeks I've noticed that Murray Clarke has been demoted to line judge. This is the second time he's been demoted. Over the years he's made some terrible calls against the Bombers that have cost us games, so I'm glad to see this.

Lawless: Trade Glenn January for Canadians
gbill2004 replied to gbill2004's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
why on earth would you consider trading January for draft picks? We literally have nobody to replace him at the moment. Jarvis Jones and Cordaro Howard. -
I actually agree with Lawless if a trade can be done. Here's the full article: Glenn January is Winnipeg's best offensive lineman, but could trading him make the Bombers a better team in the long run? Photo Store Kyle Walters can't be handcuffed by the past or the current appetite for victory here in Winnipeg. Walters needs to be free to chase more than a .500 record and some good feelings this summer. All things being equal, the Blue Bombers should get spanked tonight in B.C. by the Lions, but for Walters a second loss on the season should only affirm the fact his roster is thin, light on Canadian talent and still in the very early stages of a rebuild. A rebuild in the CFL doesn't have to take five years but it does require some basics and putting a stopwatch on the process doesn't speed it up. Walters got a quarterback this offseason and the early returns suggest Drew Willy is a pivot the Bombers can build around. Now it's time for Walters to be clear-eyed and realistic and keep his eye on the true objective and not be swayed by the ups and downs of a season that will almost certainly end short of the ultimate goal. Do what is needed to get to the real destination, no matter the pit stops in between. Walters isn't interested in being the next Blue Bombers executive that won a few playoff games but never a Grey Cup and if he has to deal with short-term pain to reach his goal he should do what he thinks best. Walters needs to operate in a vacuum and external considerations be damned. Wade Miller wants and needs to win games now. Mike O'Shea wants and needs to win games all the time. Walters has a bigger prize in mind and to do this he might have to ignore the wants and needs of his two most important colleagues. The Blue Bombers roared out to a 3-0 record and the fan base became swollen with pride. So did lots of the folks around Bomberland. But Walters wasn't fooled and when his club got spanked last week by the Edmonton Eskimos. It only underscored what he already knew: The Bombers are better than last year's team but have a long way to go before they can be called contenders. Tonight's result against the B.C. Lions, whether it's an unlikely win or the expected loss, won't change this. The same goes for limping into the playoffs this season. Such a result would only cover up blemishes that eventually must be solved for the Bombers to be a legitimate power again. Don't be fooled by the club's 3-1 record. It's a mirage. The Bombers have major flaws that the score of their first three games masked. Remember the 7-1 start in 2011 that resulted in a Grey Cup appearance and predictable loss? That team wasn't as good as its record suggested and eventually it crashed. Walters must be honest with himself and continue to evaluate and turn over this roster. It's not that strong and he knows it. If one believes Walters has been unable to undo all the damage previously inflicted on his organizational roster they are wrong. Walters has been on the job less than one year and he's done a lot. But the job has really only begun. The Bombers are thin on Canadian talent and have a major issue along the offensive line that can't be fixed overnight. Walters needs, in his own words, to "overspend on Canadians," in free agency and use the draft to improve his team's largest weakness which is its national (formerly non-import) status. The Bombers will start three Americans on the offensive line again this week. Not a winning formula in the CFL and the way this trio and their two Canadian counterparts got pushed around last week it's obvious not just the Canadians on the line need to be looked at but also the Yanks. Glenn January has been a good player for Winnipeg and he's far and away their best offensive lineman. But he may serve a bigger purpose for the club wearing another team's uniform. One good player does not a line make. And if taking the best part out of a weak unit can lead to improvement of the whole, it has to be considered. If Walters is approached with a deal similar to last season's international (formerly import) defensive lineman Alex Hall for Canadian guard Pat Neufeld involving January and a useful Canadian or a draft pick coming back, he'll be wise to take it. The only reason January is singled out is he's an international of value that could collect a meaningful return. The Bombers don't have many of those. Losing January would hurt, but in some ways he's being wasted here in Winnipeg. He can't carry the offensive line by himself and this isn't a group that needs a tweak. It needs an overhaul and January could be a catalyst. The trade deadline is a long way off on Oct. 15 and Walters will have lots of time between now and then to gauge his club and the level of interest in some of his players. Certainly it's too early to start selling assets. But it's also too early to be getting carried away by a thimble of success. Not when a gallon full of the good stuff is the true goal.

One more opening in our league! Please PM me if interested!!

@PentonKirk: Donovan Alexander (hamstring) didn't travel to B.C. and won't play. Looks like Paul Swiston will be the roster replacement. #Bombers

I guess if you don't like context, it discredits my point. Numbers are just numbers without context. The context of Grigsby's numbers in week 4 is that 37 of his 100 came on plays that Edmonton basically handed to him because they were in prevent defense in the final 25 seconds of a half. So 63 yards. If you want to go further in depth, let's look at what he did with his carries. On first down, he had carries of 4, 3, 6, 7, 1, 1, 4 ... that's 7 first down carries and he's averaging 3.4 yards a carry. He didn't have a single carry over 13 yards. On top of that, if you REALLY want to get technical about it, 11 of his receiving yards were on a play where the blocker actually got called for holding, but there were 23 seconds left in the game and Edmonton just declined the penalty. So there you have it. 100 yards, 3.4 yards a carry on first down and 48 of his 50 receiving yards were gifted to us by Edmonton by prevent defense or declined penalties because they couldn't be bothered - on top of all of that, he was also targeted 11 times as a receiver, hauled in only 5 and his mental error on one of them cost us more points than we scored all game. So yeah. Keep telling me how his performance is not trending downward. Did you factor level of competition into your analysis? I'm sure you'd agree that a better defense (e.g. Edmonton & Montreal vs Ottawa & Toronto) would impact on a running backs average yards per carry and not necessarily mean the player is regressing.

@BobIrvingCJOB: Bombers won't have to deal with kalif Mitchell Friday--he remains sidelined with an injury.

Pretty strange post for a guy who usually calls out other posters for selective stats... Willy Week 1 - 308 yds (70%) Week 2 - 307 yds (64%) Week 3 - 256 yds (63%) Week 4 - 180 yds (52%) Look! He's trending downwards too... we should try Brohm. Greaves injury against Ottawa is the main factor in all of this... that and maybe MB is the one who is trending downwards... we'll see this week. Except I'm not talking about Willy. Why did you leave out the week 4 numbers from your numerical chart? It completely discredits your point. Grigsby is NOT on a downward trend, as you state. The chart should look like this: Week 1 - 139 yards Week 2 - 112 yards Week 3 - 59 yards Week 4 - 100 yards

Knapp and Howard are back in their regular spots so we won't see Howard at RT this week according to CJOB sports report... Howard is starting at RT with Knapp at LG according to the Bombers depth chart released today.
-
Why? I'm guessing because he thinks Cotton is better. Basically. I think Grigsby's hot start was the worst thing to happen to this team because we can't justify sitting him for awhile and he's clearly the inferior back. Do we know whether Cotton is better than Grigsby at blocking?

Louie Richardson is 6'4" 225 lbs and he plays quite a few DL snaps on a weekly basis.
-
Sears is out this week.
-
Carter is no worse than Etienne.
-
Not good. Aside from Willy, he's our MVP.

I disagree... Edmonton has at least shown some signs of weakness. Calgary looks unbeatable. Calgary barely beat Hamilton.

@CFL: JUST IN MT @SUNMitchell: According to a source, Jon Cornish headed for 6-game. Return date Sept. 6, but they can pull him off early. #CFL
