Pav is starting to lose, back to Hutch ...
gbill2004 replied to IC Khari's topic in Winnipeg Jets Discussion
Short term I guess you start the hot hand; and I'm not convinced that's Pavelec anymore. My concern is Pavelec's contract is holding this team back for the next two season, when we are primed in every other area of the team to make some serious noise. -

Prior to this season Pavelec was well below league average, and you can't argue with that. Just look at his save percentage (league average is .915 and Pavelec's career save % is significantly below that). In fact that save percentage shows that about every 3 games Pavelec lets in one extra goal, compared to a league average goalie. Think about that for a minute and how damaging that is to a teams success, considering how close games are in the NHL. In a previous thread on this forum I posted links to websites with stats showing he's been the NHL's worst starting goalie over the last few years. His recent hot streak has brought his stats up to about league average, but since then he's starting level off to his normal self, below average. If Pavelec had kept up a league average save % the last two games, we would have won both games. Last two games he was .875 and .833. Prior to Pavelec's recent hot streak he was well below league average. He needed this hot streak just to make himself league average. Think about the anchor he's been this season prior to the hot streak. And now he's leveling off once again to below league average. Pavelec has a hot streak every season, but always levels off to below league average. We're lucky his hot streak occurred when it did this year, during a playoff push, but he's showing he can't be relied upon now as he's leveling off. Playing fewer games this year will also help make his numbers look a little better. He's an inconsistent, below average goalie who lets in soft goals at the worst possible times, and usually one softie per game. Pavelec is a good NHL backup, but is not a starter in the NHL. That's who he is. So what is your opinion on Hutchinson? The numbers have been tanking big time since the break are you suggesting we bench both and put in Budaj? No. I'm suggesting the Jets have a problem in net, and with goaltending being the most important position on the team, that's what's preventing the Jets from being an upper echelon team. Let's hope Hellebyuck is the real deal. Him as starter with Hutch as backup might be a nice combo, but still a lot of questions in net until we see Helly perform at the NHL level. If the Jets had unlimited financial resources, I'd say buyout Pavelec, sign an established free agent goaltender for 2 years until Helly is ready. By then you'd know what you have in Hutch, and possibly have seen a bit of Helly at the NHL level. Bottom line is Pavelec is not a starting calibre NHL goalie; every stat shows he's below league average. -

That mock didn't suggest that. And the author indicates Boyko might not end up in the NFL. -

The draft falling that way seems quite unlikely. Of course, but it's always fun to speculate and look at mock drafts! -

Morley has pretty deep roots here in Winnipeg. Wouldn't surprise he if he retired if we traded him. -

lol at not thinking Pavelec is a huge weak link on the Jets. Aside from 3-4 recent games, Pavs lets in a softie just about every game. It's amazing what the "recency factor" does to people's mindsets. lol -

The technique is you cover the side of the net where the shooter is coming from. Bottom line is Pavelec and Byfuglien both suck. I hope they're both gone by next season. April Fool's was a couple days ago...joke's over. I'm serious. Byfuglien and Pavelec are the two weak links holding the Jets back. It's funny how Pavelec suck for 3 season here, then he plays a few great games, and all of a sudden fans forget about how terrible he actually is. Why is that? And Byfuglien has been a weak link ever since the Jets returned to Winnipeg; he plays a few games at an elite level this year, because he was motivated to stay on D, and then he goes back to his usual self, and fans all of a sudden think he's elite. He's not. Buff has played at an elite level, but it seems those moments are etched in fans minds, and they forget about the other 80% of the time where Byfuglien is out there floating around not playing any defense, costing the Jets more than he's adding. He's an athlete who plays well when he's motivated. Not the kind of player I'd want on my team as a GM, and I have a feeling Chevy thinks the same way, and Byfuglien will be traded this offseason. Re-signing Byfuglien to anything more than 3-4 years will cripple the Jets long-term. -

Zebrie Sanders scouting report from before he was drafted: Strengths: Athletic OT who has experience at both tackle spots while in college…has good natural athleticism which allow him to run most speed rushers out of the play…gets good depth on his kick step and slide well laterally to mirror the rusher…very aggressive when asked to run block…does a good job attacking his man and working to overwhelm him at the point of attack…plays with heavy hands and delivers a solid punch that is able to stun the rusher…has ideal size and long arms for the position…does a good job bending his knees and staying in his stance v. the rush. Weaknesses: Is not effective when asked to block in space…at times can appear to be lost about who to block and where…is a more comfortable blocker when asked to block the guy in front of him…doesn’t use his punch as efficiently as we would like and has at times over extended himself trying to land it…he can get popped out of his stance by a good bull rush and struggles to re-anchor…will struggle to hold the edge v the elite speed rushers who can explode off their first step…could have been flagged for a few more holding penalties from the tape we saw…He’s a good athlete but too many questions exist about how he will handle elite speed rushers to make us trust him as a definite LT.

The scouting report on Gabe Lynn looks really good. His size suggests he might be looked at for either SAM or WILL spots instead of DB. Young guy too; only 24 years old.
-
O'Shea likes him so pretty sure he'll be back.
-
Pretty sure Vega got a fat signing bonus so unlikely he's going anywhere this season.

I'm expecting a bounce back year from Vega. I think (hope) his problems last year were due to playing hurt.

....What?! Listen the last thing I am is a Pavelec booster or supporter but when it's a partial breakaway as it was when Kreider made Byfuglien look stupid at the blue line, Pavelec played that as well as he could under the circumstances. He stretched out to make the pad save but Kreider went to his back hand and BARELY fit the puck in. To say he was out of position is not remotely correct whatsoever, and to say he should have made the stop considering it was a partial break shows how foolish that comment is. Even folks in peewee or bantam hockey wouldn't say he was out of position. Krieder just made a heck of a play. It's as simple as that. I'd like to say I'm surprised by your comment but for someone who suggests calling up Connor Hellebuyck for the stretch run, someone with ZERO NHL experience (Yes a great prospect no question), or implies this team is better without Dustin Byfugien, sadly I'm not surprised at all.Pavelec's skate/leg should have been touching the post on that breakaway. He was almost a foot out of position. -

Eventually, with teams retiring numbers to honour great players, there will be no numbers left, so we might start to see fractional numbers on player jerseys. I'd rather see them go to triple digits. Or maybe negatives.Letters and symbols could be an option too.
