  1. Invading Ukraine was the easy part- holding the seized territory is the problem. Putin gambled billions of rubles, the lives of tens of thousands of troops, and his own regency that no Western nation of any size would come to the aid of Ukraine, preferring comfort over involvement. He was wrong and his own thralls lied to him about the weakness of of Ukraine, the readiness of the Russian military and their willingness to die for his glory. I cannot see how Putin can survive this.
  2. Ms. Lynn provoked a lot of outrage from many of the lyrics in her songs. She addressed abortions, broken marriages and so forth which caused near-apoplexy among Southern Baptist ministers and their flocks.
  3. Maybe they ought to change their name to "Mildly Annoyed?
  4. Those attorneys had better have BIG retainers in their vaults well in advance. Jurists all over the US are rolling in the floor.
  5. Still no nose tackle.
  6. In addition, a Russian blogger has reported that 1.5 million sets of winter combat outfits that were supposed to have been stored in a warehouse and ready for shipment are nowhere to be found. Either they have been mislaid (unlikely) or stolen (even more unlikely) or were never produced with the supplier pocketing the funds (probable). Either way, the coming winter is going to be even worse than the fall. Other reports say that the ethnic Russians have been pulled back from the front lines, leaving the Chechens and other minority draftees to face the oncoming Ukrainian forces who have not only the weapons, munitions and supplies from the West, but also massive amounts of abandoned Russian armoured vehicles, weapons and munitions from Russian forces. Not a good time to be a Russian grunt.
  7. It would have been remarkable if Jones did not see Poilievre as a fellow-traveler. We can hope that they both suffer the same fate.
  8. A very small loss- Starkey was the least talented of the Beatles by a long shot.
  9. There's a ton of stuff that Trumpers do not know.
  10. This same source has been accurately reporting the Russian debacle for the past month and in this case, this account is supported by other sources. If anything, the plight of the Russian army on the front lines is worse than described- little food, antiquated weapons, zero air/artillery support and imaginary medical services.
  11. Tim Allen is a shallow mental midget who happened to fall into the lead role on a popular sitcom. He is a convicted drug dealer who escaped jail by informing on his customers and suppliers. He was also convicted of flying a (private) aircraft while drunk a few years ago.
  12. Just now: Russian lines are having total collapse in Kherson.
  13. The SARS-CoV-2 virus may damage some patients' hearts, a study in Immunology suggests For months, scientists have been expressing concern about the increase in cardiovascular diseases among COVID-19 patients, even after the SARS-CoV-2 virus has long since cleared their bodies. These heart issues have long been part of the larger conversation about the long-term aftermath of COVID-19, with a June study by the Department of Veterans Affairs even finding that those reinfected with COVID-19 were twice as likely to either die or have a heart attack as people who were only infected once. "The two respiratory viruses (COVID and flu) look very different in the hearts of these patients." Now, a new study in the scientific journal Immunology uses a technique known as spatial transcriptomics — which allows scientists to directly map how genes are expressed on tissues — to reveal the SARS-CoV-2 virus' unique effects on human organs. The study compared SARS-CoV-2 to the influenza virus H1N1, which caused the 2009 pandemic. Unfortunately, the evidence also suggests that the SARS-CoV-2 virus is more damaging to human organs, and for a longer period of time, compared to H1N1. In the study, the scientists examined and compared heart tissue from individuals who had died from both diseases, as well as a group of control patients. While the COVID-19 patients did not have the SARS-CoV-2 virus itself present in their heart tissue, the cardiac muscles showed signs of DNA damage that was unique to them — and which was utterly distinct from the inflammatory signal from influenza patients. By contrast, COVID-19 patients had a suppressed inflammatory signal. "The two respiratory viruses (COVID and flu) look very different in the hearts of these patients," corresponding author Dr. Arutha Kulasinghe from the University of Queensland told Salon by email. "DNA damage is a marker of genomic instability — we've known about it in chronic conditions such as cancer, neurodegenerative disease and diabetes — however its role in COVID was not known and the clinical implications for this aren't clear at this stage." Kulasinghe expressed concern that their findings may be "the 'canary in the coal mine,'" revealing that there are fundamental biological differences between how influenza and COVID-19 affect the human heart.
  14. I saw Mack Herron at his prime and think he was as good as Roberts with a few extra kilos of muscle that allowed him to break tackles. His career was also cut short for entirely different reasons. A helluva athlete but a shabby example of a human being.
  15. Boy, that relocation really worked for him, didn't it?
  16. But his attitude fit so well in Regina....
  17. Can't find the thread in which the NFL injuries have been discussed so....... ‘Broken System’: Ex-Coach Fumes After Bucs Tight End Plays With a Concussion An ex-Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach has excoriated his former NFL franchise for sending a player back onto the field on Sunday night with a concussion—the second such fumble in recent days. Just a week after concussion experts slammed the Miami Dolphins for seemingly putting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in harm’s way, Bucs tight end Cameron Brate slammed into receiver Chris Godwin and hit his head on the turf shortly before half-time in Sunday night’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Brate was “shaken up and slow to get up,” NBC’s Mike Tirico said during the broadcast. He was able to gingerly jog off to the sideline but was back on the field after a “two-minute” chat with the head trainer and a team doctor, according to sideline reporter Melissa Stark. Brate never entered the blue medical tent, NBC Sports reported, and re-entered the game after just a few plays. He then played an entire drive before entering concussion protocol and being ruled out in the second half.
  18. an apology is insufficient. You are expected to fall on your sword now to atone for the shame you have brought upon yourself, your legion and your house.
  19. Kolankowski was scary bad at the start of the season and all of the changes in the O-line exacerbated that, but as the line gelled, his play improved. As someone said, "You can't buy experience but the lack of it can really cost you".
  20. So...if Richie is getting older, we should get Younger?
  21. Agreed- no matter the passport. A pity his career had to end as it did.
  22. Marjorie Taylor Greene Falsely Claims That Democrats Are Murdering Republicans There is free speech, and then there is speech that incites and foments rage and violence. These MAGAs are drifting far more toward the latter. On the same night that Trump told his rallygoers in Warren, Michigan, that the Democrats want him in prison “because they’re sick” (This coming from a man who won office on “Lock her up”), Marjorie Taylor Greene told an audience that Democrats are killing Republicans From The Insider:....................... Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene deceptively claimed at a rally for former President Donald Trump in Warren, Michigan, on Saturday that Democrats are murdering Republicans. “I’m not going to mince words with you all,” Greene said. “Democrats want Republicans dead. They’ve already started the killings.” Greene, who has repeatedly spread bizarre conspiracy theories, went on to reference a local news story to support her baseless claim that Democrats are hunting down GOP voters. “An 18-year-old was run down by a Democrat driver who confessed to killing the teenager simply because he was a Republican,” said Greene. However, North Dakota Highway Patrol Captain Bryan Niewind told Fox News that his department’s investigations have “uncovered no evidence to support the claim” that the murder had anything to do with politics or that the victim was a Republican. It is difficult to establish whether a random 18-year-old is a Republican, Democrat, completely agnostic, whatever.
  23. Trump wanted to display Superman shirt after being discharged from hospital for COVID: Haberman book This Tuesday, October 4 is the official release date for New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman’s new book, “Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America.” Excerpts from the book have been widely reported, and one of the anecdotes being reported by Axios involves Trump’s desire to display the Superman logo when he was discharged from Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland in October 2020. During his 2020 campaign, Trump downplayed the seriousness of the COVID-19 pandemic — as he feared it would hurt his chances of being reelected. But in October 2020, Trump tested positive for COVID-19 and was hospitalized at Reed. In “Confidence Man,” Haberman describes Trump’s idea, reporting, “(He) would be wheeled out of Walter Reed in a chair and, once outdoors, he would dramatically stand up, then open his button-down dress shirt to reveal (a) Superman logo beneath it. Trump was so serious about it that he called the campaign headquarters to instruct an aide, Max Miller, to procure the Superman shirts; Miller was sent to a Virginia big-box store.” According to Haberman, Trump’s idea was inspired by the King of Soul, James Brown, as well as professional wrestling. But Trump ended up abandoning the idea. Trump attorney lawyers up — and says she’s willing to cooperate with DOJ in Mar-a-Lago case: report At least one member of former President Donald Trump's legal team has hired her own attorney — and allies are urging another to follow suit, according to The Washington Post. Trump attorneys Christina Bobb and Evan Corcoran affirmed to the Justice Department that Trump had handed over all classified records from his Mar-a-Lago residence in response to a May subpoena. But prosecutors said their response was "incomplete" after the FBI searched and found more documents at Mar-a-Lago and cited evidence of "obstructive conduct" in response to the subpoena. Bobb has since hired her own lawyer, Florida-based former prosecutor John Lauro, and "made it known to Trump allies that she is willing to cooperate and be interviewed by the Justice Department," according to the Post. And colleagues have similarly urged Corcoran to hire a criminal defense lawyer because of his response to the subpoena, according to the report, but he has insisted it is not necessary. Asked if she was negotiating to sit for an interview with the DOJ, Bobb told the outlet, "I'm sorry, I'm not allowed to talk about it." Bobb signed a document affirming that Trump handed over "all documents that are responsive to the subpoena" after a "diligent search." Corcoran then met with DOJ officials and made a similar statement. Investigators ultimately found more evidence that there were additional documents at Mar-a-Lago and secured a warrant to search the premises in August. https://www.alternet.org/2022/10/christina-bobb/
