There are a couple of moments where Pine lets some Shatner-isms come through. Primarily at the end of the first film when he walks onto the bridge and says "Bones". Also he sits in the chair much like Shatner did. Id say he was directed to be less like Shatner -
Okay, but my question remains. A rookie THIS season is what in a 2017 expansion draft? A 2nd Year player because he just completed his second year or a 3rd year player because he's about to enter his third year?

You got it! So they NEED a scene in T5 with Mark Walberg singing it... it would be homage to TWO films. Boogie Nights was awesome, by the way!

That's another example of the writers not getting it. We were moved when Spock died because we knew these characters for nearly 20 years. And we knew *their* relationship. In STID, they tried to invoke the same emotion about characters that barely knew each other. Spock weeping over his friend of about a year when he barely emoted over his mother and his entire planet dying. -
I actually agree. Surely they can fit that song in in an amusing way to pay homage. By the way, anyone remember the other movie that song was used in? I'll give you a hint, it has a connection to one of the stars of Transformers 4(and 5 I guess)

Now that I think about it when the shrink basically had to face her enabling of tony she was "confronted" at a dinner party. Her counsellor revealed confidential info to otners at the party (other doctors). It wasn't said it was an intervention but I guess it was. That was pretty slick

Tony was afraid of them finding out. But when Junior found out Tony told his crew and they all basically shugged IT off. I think it was Paulie who even admitted he sometimes talked to someone. Tony made it clear he didn't discuss details and it showed their trust in him. And as said above it showed their hypocrisy. There were rules but only when they wanted them

I didn't mind this as much. Mainly because they didn't show the Klingons enough to do much damage to them! -

Bad Robot had no respect for Star Trek at all. They created the so called new universe to free themselves of canon and then used canon all the time to show Star Trek street cred. It was very disappointing. There was no reason to thumb their nose at the existing franchise. -
I thought they said 1st and 2nd year players? Comrie is a first year player this year, second year player in 2016/2017. If the draft is summer 2017, is he a 3rd year player (the year he is going into) or a 2nd year player (the year he just completed)? That could make a big difference for the Jets. Would impact Ehlers, Copp, Morrissey also.

I forgot all this. Was Galvatron in AOE? I have blocked it from my mind. What a joke.

I always took his money argument as being a put on from a guy who was nervous and more humble than he let on. Remember how he reacted when Laforge told him about the statue. He was afraid of the importance that would come with being the first Warp capable human. So he gave Riker a line about money. Riker responded with the quote about being a great man to remind Cochrane that he knows its not true. Yeah, to a degree. But for Vulcan's to be near earth, they are pretty advanced. It just seemed weird they wouldnt pick up the Enterprise orbiting Earth. Again, I can overlook it. But if we wanted to nitpick we could. Agree whole-heartedly. And I've argued with Bob Orci about this many times. The first film was ok, able to overlook some issues but STID was so awful it made the first one worse in retrospect. They just didnt know the character. Their Kirk was the stereotype of James Kirk in popular culture not the actual character. Same with Spock really. Bones was the best of the lot in the 09 film but in STID he was a parody, rattling off one liners. They forgot the most important thing about Kirk-Spock-Bones. Spock & Bones were basically the devil and angel on Kirk's shoulder, the logic vs emotion. And Kirk was the very complicated combination of them both, a guy who used both logic and emotion to his advantage. He was a cowboy but a diplomat too. You could say he was the reason Starfleet made rules like the Prime Directive because no one else could be trusted to make the decisions he did. In TOS, Kirk was described as a cadet who was a stack of books with legs. I think JJ went the easy route with the sterotype of a young rebel without a cause. If it was me, I would have kept the opening with the Kelvin but made it the Enterprise from TOS with Robert April as captain. Destroy it as seen in the movie. Young Kirk doesnt grow up with an absent mother and jerk step father. Instead his mother never re-marries, is devoted to Kirk, instilling in him the values we would later see. But the shadow of Kirk's father looms over him. George was now a hero and the new Enterprise was constructed in the middle of Iowa because it was George's hometown. Kirk was always looking to the stars but never went because of his mother's fear of losing James too. So Kirk sacrificed the destiny that was pulling at him. Make Pike more of an Obi Wan type, a guy who is "around", someone James loves because of the stories of being in space, someone that maybe Kirk's mother is hinted at having romantic feelings for but also resents that he inspires James. Pike implores her to let Kirk follow his dreams, she angrily refuses to risk losing him. Pike gives her some words of wisdom. Then gives Kirk the same but, staring off at the Enterprise being built, he says he cant go, cant disappoint his mother. Finally, she relents, tells him he's meant for bigger things. Follow your heart. He joins the Academy. I think that's more interesting. And with a stronger sense of this unseen force of destiny pulling Kirk towards his rightful place. At the academy he should be more serious, perhaps slightly awkward. Someone the girls like but he's more focused on studies. We see him evolve and gain confidence. In fact, at the risk of making him a bit sleazy, he should come to realise his effect on women can help by "dating" a girl that gains him access to the Kobiashi Maru test, which he re-programs. Sits up in bed with a beautiful young cadet, flashes the grin and says "I need a favour..." Now he's learning something we would see him use later on. In the film, he made a mockery of the Maru test and it was ridiculous. In WoK he says he re-programmed the test so he could win, not so he couldn't lose. End the film with Kirk getting his commendation for original thinking for beating the test and then being promoted to Lieutenant. He goes off to the Farragut, his first assignment. Spock goes off to the Enterprise with Pike. The others, not so important. But the idea is they go their separate ways. But Spock Prime provides some final words of wisdom that indicate that destiny will bring them back together. Way better *story*. -
Well the issue there is mental health and sober thought. Many people who try and end their life and fail are glad they failed. So the issue is making sure this is not depression, something that they would not want down the road. In this case, I believe the patient has a month or so to live, is in a lot of pain and wants to choose the time of death surrounded by family. Hard to argue with that.

I think expansion draft should be slanted to protect existing teams. I know there is always the desire to create a competitive expansion team but why? If they cant create popular support in the first five years, then they shouldnt be there. Plenty of teams suck every year. An expansion team has the same opportunity to draft and sign free agents as everyone else and get better in 5-6 years. In fact, they are probably awarded the #1 draft pick in Year One anyway so an even better chance,
-
Depends how they see it. This year is Ehlers/Copp (and Morrissey) first year as a pro. So next season is year two. If the draft is summer 2017, are they "2nd year players" or are they third year players? Technically they are in between years. If they are third year players, then you *have* to protect Ehlers and Morrissey. You might gamble that Copp isnt selected...

I would certainly think so. You cant walk into a hospital and force a doctor to prescribe end of life medication. However, my dad is in the Palliative Care program and all of the Doctors and Nurses that work in the program are very sensitive to patience dying and I would think most, if not all, would be comfortable with being involved. And certainly those that wouldnt want to actually administer, there would be someone who would.

Teams under the current plan could protect seven forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender or eight skaters and a goaltender. Hmmm that's a bit weird. So if you wanted to protect more than 3 D, you could only protect 9 players total. If you only protect 3 D, then you can protect 11 total. I imagine Jets would protect 7 forwards (Scheif, Wheeler, Little, Lowry, Dano, Armia, Perreault), 3 D (Buff, Trouba, Myers) and Helle. 1st/2nd year player exemptions protects Petan, Ehlers, Copp, Connor, Lemieux. If I understand correctly. Of the remaining Jets, we might not lose anyone too substantial. With 29 other teams, the Jets left overs wouldn't be too great. However, next summer, Morrissey and Petan would be going into their 3rd season so are they no longer exempt? Actually, Ehlers would be too, so would Copp.

I thought it made little sense when watching it initially. But when watching it all together, it made more sense. She had routinely provided advice that helped Tony be a better gangster. Especially in latter seasons, they had her counsel him and he directly used that advice. I think her realization came a bit too quickly but as it came from HER counselor it was interesting. Because for the entire series he had been trying to make her see the light. She finally did. The one thing I didnt like was that as soon as she booted him, he didnt seem to really suffer, whereas in earlier seasons when he stopped seeing her, he did. There wasnt much time left to show how not having her affected him so maybe that's why. I somewhat expected him to seek her out (or vice versa) when he suffered some "loss" close to him...I thought it might have been a nice thing if she met him at a diner or something, like "unofficially" counseling him. But I think she was meant to be a counter to Tony's wife. Whereby one pretended not to know what Tony was and happily reaped the benefits, the other knew what he was and lied to herself but in the end, couldnt hide the truth from her own conscience.

Tough issue. But in the case of a person who is of sound mind and has support of family and doctors, I cant argue with it.

Yeah I didnt mind using an old nuke. I thought that was a neat message. But they wanted more comedy and so they used Cochrane. I didnt like that. Should have kept him more revered. He didnt have to be as stoic as the TOS actor who was as exciting as watching paint dry. A happy medium would have been better. The whole story was a bit odd in fact because Vulcan's decided to just land on Earth because they sensed the warp drive of his ship? That doesnt seem like very wise first contact protocol. Plus, where were the Vulcan's when the Borg were attacking Earth or the Enterprise was in orbit? But those were leaps in logic that I could accept because the rest of the film was good. Its when the film is bad that those plot holes are maximized, like with STID. -
I guess it depends on what we have as far as exposed players. If they have two veterans and we protect all our good players but Comrie is an option they might choose him. If the draft is summer 2017, I imagine Pavs is gone. Would be nice if it was this summer. Then we could leave Pavs unprotected. It would also protect Morrissey. Hopefully they allow ELC's to be protected. Then I think we're ok.
-
I remember both, that Soundwave did *not* play cassettes but I also seem to recall a version that did...?
-
If they keep ELC exempt that helps a lot. Part of it depends on when they do the draft or when this team enters. Surely they wont be awarding Vegas for 2016/2017. It would have to be 2017/2018.

I was more of an Ultra Magnus fan.

I thought the same thing. Might have to leave Comrie exposed... if it came down to Comrie or Petan, who do you expose?
