  1. I get why those who consider themselves social conservatives would want to vote UCP and I totally support them doing so. What I don't get is the economic argument. There's nothing I've read - and I'm trying to stay as informed as I can - that indicates that Kenny's economic plan is superior to Notley's.  I just wish never-NDP'ers would just own it rather than  try to convince themselves and others that Kenny can raise the price of oil by yelling and bully his way to building a pipeline.

  2. Had a funny phone call from the UCP here in Alberta last week. I don't remember the script exactly but they started out by identifying themselves as calling on behalf of the UCP and then saying "Don't you think it's time we had government..." and then bashing the NDP on an issue, I think it was about their  financial management. I've actually been a fan, for the most part, of the provincial NDP (I have no idea which least worst party I'm going to go with federally but I know it's not NDP) so I said "nope" in a friendly, half-amused tone and he said thank-you and hung up. I thought, wow, if you were trying to convince me to swing to the UCP you might wanna switch up your tactics. I'm not sure the abrupt-end-to-the-phone-call-when-I don't-agree-with-you route is gonna take you a long way.

Where does the Xr slot in? Too high? I didn't really look at it or consider it.

I'll be watching with curiosity when Apple needs to announce their sales. That should be telling if they miss targets.

Xr is just over $1000 to start.  It not a matter of can I afford it but do I want to. At this stage in my life (i.e., with a young family) I would much rather buy something like the Nokia 6.1 and spend the other $700 elsewhere.

I've been an Android fan and supporter for 8 years. I'm pretty invested in the ecosystem, both Android and Google. Google Minis at home, Chromecasts, YouTube Premium, etc.

That being said, in my last position at work, I had an iPhone. I had it just short of two years and I miss it dearly. Not because of the tech but because of a few simple things like iMessages. My friends and family have iPhones and I relied heavily on the simplicity of iMessages, including the group chat.

I'm up for renewal now and I was prepared to get an iPhone over an Note 9. Now, with these prices, I can't justify it. It will cost me hundreds more. I like the larger screen, so I would need a Xs Max. I need more than 64gb, so I would need to get the 256gb model.

It will cost me $640 more to get the iPhone Xs Max over the Note 9. That's a lot of money.

I can make the Google ecosystem work without an Android phone but I can't get over the price difference.

It seems iMessages keeps a remarkable number of people in the Apple ecosystem; I know that was one of the biggest factors for us. That and Apple getting into the mid-range market (my wife and I got SEs). Now that they're back to being high-end only I don't think even iMessages will be enough to keep us when it's time for a new phone (I was very close to getting a Nokia 6.1 a few months ago but had trouble even justifying that expense with my SE still ticking).  I'm impatiently waiting for the day when there is a capable iMessage equivalent on Android.

A reboot?  Thats weird wording.  More like a spin-off/sequel/continuation.  The show was brilliant and Grammer is a tremendous actor so I'd tune in.

Agreed. It seems that "reboot" has lost it's original meaning and is just a blanket term now, which I actually find quite annoying.

They try to do much during the game.  So tired of interviews starting between plays then continuing on during a play.   I tune in for the football game, not the other stuff.  Show me the damn game.   Also the stupid camera angles or sideline shots are too long between plays as well.  I want to see how the teams are lining up prior to the snap.

Keep it simple and do the simple stuff well and people will be happy.   Try to do too much and do a bad job at it, and they will piss people off.

I watched as much World Cup as I could find time for and it was quite refreshing to not be bombarded by interviews and graphics that took away from the game more than they added.

  7. I've used a safety razor for almost 10 years now and I got rid of shaving cream and shaving oil by buying a fog-less mirror and just shaving in the shower. Saves lots of time and money. Though when I have the time I enjoy the ritual of pulling out the soap and brush.

Which country did you choose? Did it stream consistently? Was it in HD? How much bandwidth?

After reading @johnzo posts last year about it I also used a server from the Netherlands, but my plan this year is to look at the list of available countries and favourite them in my VPN (I use IPVanish) so I can just choose whichever has the lowest latency at the time.

The only issues I had with the stream were on my end. I live in Northern Alberta and my internet speeds would routinely drop below 5 Mbps. When my internet speed was even marginally higher than that the stream was great. Over the winter we were ungraded to lightning fast 15Mbps (sadly that is considered fast for our neck of the woods) so I'm expecting no issues this season. Sorry, don't know about bandwidth.

Like @johnzo said, there was one game that didn't show up in the archive until much later but other than that my experience was they showed up within an hour or two, often sooner, after the game ended, and the vast majority of the games I watched were archived.

The Bomber pass is perfect for someone like me who only has time to watch the Bomber games, and usually from the archive rather than live.  Not sure if TSN will allow you to watch archived games or not, but if that's not a big deal and/or if you want to watch all the games then TSN might be a better option.

  9. The coach, Darcy Haugan, was from Peace River, where I work and just down the highway from where I live. He coached the local junior team for 12 years before moving to coach the Broncos in 2015. I didn’t really know him but I did have the opportunity to chat with him many times when our  vehicles were in for maintenance at the Kal-Tire where he worked.  A really great guy.  In June 2017 the ground was broken for the town’s new rec centre and there’s growing talk of honouring him in some way, which I think is a great idea.

There are people mentioning an office pool, which in itself is clearly a tongue in cheek thing, that Dutch would be outted as a creep based on a physical assault from 15 years ago where he fought someone at a wedding?

First of all, one has nothing to do with the other.

Secondly, I think the sarcasm inherent in "office pools" and such predicting who's next is going over some people's heads

Thirdly, it actually disproved your theory that Dutch got into a fight at a wedding 15 years ago and has done just fine since and literally ONE person mentioned him as a potential "next creep" BEFORE someone else mentioned the wedding fracas.  So in truth, it has zero to do with each.

To wrap this silliness up, the issue of false allegations is serious and real.  But let's not pretend a certain someone in this thread was making a serious and nuanced argument rather then being a Moore/Trump level supporter with the "if a woman was really assaulted, she'd have come forward before" outrageous argument.

And while its easy and convenient to ignore the facts that disprove this "what about the men" narrative, again, THIS particular issue which is the widely reported speaking out against this behavior in the wake of the Harvey story has shown us examples of people doing just fine after unsubstantiated allegations were made.  Others admitted wrong doing, apologized and were fine.  This is absolutely not a situation where "anything" said is being treated like a guy did the most heinous thing imaginable.  Different scenarios are seeing different reactions and consequences.

Im still waiting for the list of all the falsely accused men in the wake of Harvey to be posted.

EDIT: And for the record @StevetheClub I dont mean to make it sound like Im lumping in you with that other person.  I appreciate your perspective, just countering some of it...

It's all good, I appreciate the clarification.

I used Dutch as an example that your past doesn't go away as easily as you're saying it does; I'm not sure if people are trying to draw the connection between the assault and him being a creep. I still think you're minimizing the impact of accusations on the falsely accused - I mean, how would you know if they "were fine", people carry all sorts of struggles that no one knows about. I get that the best you can do is lean on your own experience and what is public knowledge in responding, but I guess it just wouldn't be the same for me. Regardless of the outcome, I don't think I would just get over it if I was falsely accused of something like this. I doubt it would destroy me, but I wouldn't be fine with it; all I'm saying is I think there is room in-between and I think you're not appreciating that and assuming that how it has affected you is how it affects everyone and that what is public is true. I also agree that "the issue of false allegation is serious and real" and am confused as to why you're choosing not to talk about it and being condescending towards those who are trying to.  We both know that threads often go in different directions while staying under the same umbrella.

At the risk of getting my knuckles rapped for saying this, that is the most clueless thing ever posted on this forum and undermines the credibility of anything you have ever previously posted or ever will post.  Just...wow.

Yeah, it's actually difficult to find words that accurately describe just how wrong that statement is. I think "just...wow" summed it up pretty good.

I know what you're saying.  It just has little to no bearing on the topic.  Its consideration for the outlier.  I think we can all appreciate that.  But other comments Basslicker made show he's more of the Moore/Trump defender ilk than the common sense 'ofcourse not every man is a predator' perspective.  I would not lump you in with that position.  I get what you're saying.

I'm not sure why you keep saying things like "it has no bearing on the topic". There  have been a couple of different tracks in this thread that are appropriate to the thread title even if you don't think they're relevant. I think we can all agree, well for the most part, on the topic of the abusers and victims that you've been referring to. I think, though, that the Romanado/Bezan situation  and apparently false accusations and how they affect the accused is germane to the thread.  Regardless of the frequency or impact on the accused, the apparent political opportunism displayed by Romanado is disgusting and demeaning. And maybe it's not having an immediate significant impact on Bezan but I think it is quite minimizing to say that it will just go away. I mean, just in this thread people are talking about the possibility of Darren Dutchyshen being an abuser based on an incident more than 15 years ago for which he was acquitted.

I find it so odd that some peoples reactions when so many men are being outted for their bad, abusive behavior is "wont someone think of the poor men".  Im with you, where are all these destroyed men who were falsely accused?

The VAST majority of cases recently include multiple accusers, vetted statements, reasonable stories and men who either dont respond or admit at least some wrong-doing.  In the cases of one accuser and a denial, like George Takei, the story goes away.  So what is the issue?

According to CNN, allegations like this have a 2%-7% false rate.  The idea that this is a wide-spread, rampant "revenge scheme" is absurd and another attempt to victim-blame.

Does it happen?  Ofcourse.  But as discussed previously in this very thread, there was an attempt to set up the Post and they caught it...because they do due diligence.

I think you're right about the false rate in the general sense that most people who come forward tell the truth, and I absolutely think it's about time people feel comfortable and safe sharing the horrible things that they have experienced and that the abusers are getting what they deserve.

That being said, it does seem that increasingly that in the court of public opinion it is guilty until proven innocent, and this I have a problem with, even if it affects a relative few.

Oh I agree.. i'm a big believer in trial by fire as long as they are ready to play.  You can break a player's spirit by putting him in before he's ready (and yes I realize if you ain't tough enough at this level to step in and mentally handle it, you may never be) so I do like to give them limited reps and then work them in on an injury fill in, etc type reps.

no, giving a guy time to develop on the PR and in pre-season is bringing him along slowly... putting a guy who may not be ready into the lineup, is a trial by fire.   semantics, I'm sure but bring up someone slowly imo never involves throwing them into the breech.   limited reps or emergency fill-in still gives the guy that "omfg its REAL!" feelings im sure that they wouldn't get on the PR or in pre-season reps.

    IMO anyway.

Not to extend this conversation or pick on you, but just to clarify things. Quote #1 =/ quote #2. Perhaps what you meant to type and what you actually did are different in #1.

Contrary to popular misconceptions, when Remembrance Day falls on a weekend (Saturday this year) it is not observed on the following Monday (unlike say, Canada Day) as it is not  a statutory holiday. Most people will not get the Monday off. Sorry to be a debbie downer but most people are probably going to figure this out in the upcoming week anyways.

That said, I plan on coming into work on the Monday without a voice from being so loud at the game on Sunday.

Too bad for you guys. It's a stat here in Alberta.

Ive seen talk of potential mental health issues and some of which can be hereditary.  Of course, you still no right from wrong, especially when planning such an awful thing.  Interestingly, when the University sniper (US, years ago) was autopsied, he had a tumor pressing on the part of the brain that deals with aggression.

So its always interesting looking some clues in the physical and mental.  But it should not excuse the act.

Also sounds like he was on psychotropics, which might be one piece of the puzzle (the size  of which depends on your bias).

2 "potential" fake injuries (and I stress potential because I believe at least one of them was real) with one in each half is is consistent?   That seems like a pretty silly statement.

But lets even say it is true, which I am still not sold on, one of the things that I love about O'shea is that he pushes the boundaries of rules (even the TSN panel of all people recognize that), so it would be tough to say he wouldn't do the same.  Players have been taking a conveniently timed knee for a change of pace for as long as football has been around and doing it on a steady basis, so I don't see how this would magically qualify as different.  It really just sounds like some people are sucking on some sour grapes here, but to each their own.

It doesn't "magically" qualify as different. It qualifies as different because it was after the teams had made their way to the line. That's an important difference. As Doug Brown wrote, for years players have taken a knee, particularly after turnovers when the unit that was on the field would have to come right back on. Not after the teams were already on the line. And, as Brown also pointed out, there were at least 3 instances of "cramps".

Significantly more "Internet Ink" has been spilled on the 3 'injuries' than all of the the other plays combined.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I think the fake injuries were significant and unsportsmanlike. The Bombers have used the hurry-up to catch teams off-guard and keep momentum going and as others have mentioned two, or even three, scores is not a lot in the CFL, especially for the Bombers. A game can change a lot in a very short amount of time.

Almost as bad, if not worse, is the Riders not owning up to it. Why hide it if it's not shady?
