Yeah I don't hate the guys we took, but it felt like Findlay or Shand would've been a higher upside play at positions that made a bit more sense (Canadian Safety or DL) instead of Smith. And at our first pick I also like Newell as a better fit or ideally, move up a slot or two to get Shanks - who is probably the only real top end difference maker OL of the group. I don't think we reached or outsmarted ourselves with the picks we made, just the guys were both safer picks at positions that we don't necessarily need anymore Canadian depth (or future Canadian starter). I do agree that Shay could end up being one of the best players from this draft though, its just interesting to see how he fits given our recent glut of American LBs.

This is exactly how I see it too. Although we can always use LBers for teams, we drafted 3 more Canadians when we already know we likely aren't cutting Gauthier and we have Cadwallader as a ST footsoldier and 4 americans for the 2 Mike and Will spots. We didn't need a Canadian at that spot other than a mid/late round special teams plugger and we used up our top 2 slots for them. Although they could both become starters, neither will be right away and the path to how they become starters is unclear. The QB pick is wild and hard to get a read on. We also have 3 American QBs that we will for sure roster and at least 2 more fighting for the third string/PR depth QB spot so its tough to see where a raw Canadian guy could fit with that group... The rest are low upside ST plugs/depth OL/depth pieces at DL and Receiver. Nothing to wow you about, but like you mentioned, I don't see more than 1 maybe 2 potential good "starting" calibre upside guy and we could've used a couple of higher risk higher reward types to replenish the Demski/Olivera/Fords (gone) of the roster.

So Matt Sheridan

We're in range for our annual token Bison pick too
-
Phew we drafted a LBer in round 5. Thought we weren't going to be able to grab any LBs
-
We picked a small, slow receiver. But don't worry, he can't jump either.

Yeah kinda bullshit you need another TSN subscription on top of your TV TSN subscription to watch it. Growing the game and making it more accessible and whatnot...

How does Elgersma get on the roster with all of Collaros, Streveler, Wilson, Dolegala and Patterson around competing for 3 spots.
-
Probably LBer
-
Yes, but hopefully this means the end of Kyrie Injury Wilson and Shayne old man Gauthier on the depth chart. We can't keep 8-9 LBers around
-
Hmmm. So.... Tony Jones (Am) Kyrie Wilson (Am) Michael Ayers (Am) Jonathan Jones (Am) Connor Shay (Nat) Jaylen Smith (Nat) ...for 2 potential starting spots?
-
I'd go Findlay

"Mike we can't bring back broken old Bighill again this year" "Fine Kyle, but I want Canadian LB (O')Shay in the draft then!"

Big oof! Who will replace his **checks notes** 138 yards and 0TDs in 10 starts?! -
maybe Wilson is filling Ayers' role as the rotational DI/Special teams Ace if Ayers walks for more money. ...or Jonathan Jones is our new MLB

Thinking about it a bit though... What if instead of Wolitarsky and his 110k, we let Lawler and his 275k go. Yes we downgrade a bit and yes they are different types of receivers, but a receiving corps of Clercius/Wolitarsky, Demski, Mitchell, Schoen and Rookie American (or third Canadian Wolitarsky) vs Clercius, Demski, Mitchell, Schoen, Lawler isn't that drastically different, AND if you make that swap, you also get 150k+ to spend on another gamebreaker at LB or DL or DB... I think I'd rather have kept Woli and let Lawler walk.

Maybe even before that. For all the success we've had keeping guys around, we've basically hemorrhaged interior canadian OL since Brendon Labatte. Matthias Goossen - elite C, played 4 seasons, went home to be a firefighter. Sukh Chungh - elite nasty G, played 3 seasons, went home to BC. Michael Couture - solid C, played 4 seasons, went back home to BC. Geoff Gray - played parts of 5 seasons, fizzled out and retired to non-football work. Drew Desjarlais - played 2 seasons, went to the NFL, signed back in Ottawa after returning. Liam Dobson - possibly leaving? hasn't re-signed yet. All of these guys are younger interior OL than Kolo and Neufeld, and all of them would be improvements if they still played for us (except maybe Gray who we moved on from). It would be nice if a couple of these elite interior guys that we developed stuck around for long careers like Bryant.
-
might be true, but between our 3 interior OL, Oliveira, Demski, Wolitarski and even Clercius, we should have at most 1 Canadian on D (Lawson) most of the snaps.
-
I'd move on from Lawler if we could only pick one of him or Schoen. Rather have the consistent 12 yard guy than the one 50 yard bomb spectacular catch every half.

3 turds plus crappy honker. Long winter edition.

The Argos seem to lose a few of their good guys to free agency every year the last couple years and every year they find a few more new guys to take their spots and be effective. We seem to have the opposite problem where we keep holding onto guys way past their primes and get to watch them fade away into nothing and be ineffective (Alexander, Taylor, Thomas, Willie - although he was actually good in the cup game, Bighill, Zach, Kyrie Wilson, Sheehan) all are below average at this point and not getting it done anymore. -

How many losses will it take before they stop saying "yeah we'll burn the tape on that one and get em next week" and actually make some bigger changes? My bet is at least 4.
