  1. During the 1974 season, Don Jonas was unhappy with new Head Coach Bud Riley taking the play calling away from him & giving it to his OC. Riley said qbs had enough things to worry about on the field & playcalling shouldn't be one of them. Besides, Riley said that the game was changing & more responsibilities were being given to coaches when it came to play calling. Turns out Riley was right as today no qb calls his own game. But Jonas was a throwback to another time & he felt he was the one who should call the plays not an assistant on the sidelines so there was a major clash there. With the Bombers struggling on the field, GM Earl Lunsford felt it was his duty to open his big yap of a pie hole to the local media & he too criticized Jonas for throwing some ill timed interceptions early in that 1974 season. Jonas took exception to that & in an article published by the Winnipeg Tribune's Sports Editor & Bomber beat writer jack Matheson in mid August, he criticized Riley for changing the playcalling from what he was used to. When it came to Lunsford in the same article, Jonas was quoted by Matheson as saying something about Lunsford not having a clue about how the offense worked, not knowing the plays, never sitting in on film or qb meetings, that he should stick to managing the team & mind his own business. Lunsford was angered & set out to trade Jonas just to show him Who Was The Boss. A couple of weeks later, the trade was made & he was off to Hamilton for Chuck Ealey. One thing a player didn't do was cross Lunsford as he was a vindictive man. A number of players including Jonas found that out. Jonas knew something was up. About a week before the trade was consumated he went in to talk to Lunsford to try to smooth the waters. He said he was willing to step aside as the starter to play Brock. That he would like to mentor the young QB as a player-coach & that he wanted to end his career as a Bomber. Lunsford had made up his mind to trade what he felt was the "malcontent" veteran qb & nothing Jonas said made a difference.
  2. Local Winnipeg Boy Henry Janzen. Played on 4 Grey Cup teams as a punt returner & starting DB. Coached the Bisons to back to back Vanier Cups in 1969 & 70.
  3. Tom Walker Fulllback #32 1973-78.
  4. Broken neck. Goodlow was in bad shape & took a year for Goodlow to recover. He had one of those gawd awful halos he had to wear. Amazing he actually came back to play. Lansdowne Park in 1978.
  5. Who is that Yeti trying to eat him?
  6. I remember Huffer throwing a TD pass but I couldn't remember to what receiver. Thanks for clearing that up. That was a heckuva tandem. They also had Jim Zorn as the #3 qb in 1986. The other QB tandem we had was Dieter Brock & Harry Knight from 1976-78. Knight had to retire as he damaged his rotator cuff which was a career ender back in the day. He played better than Brock, at times. He was pretty effective coming off the bench when Dieter struggled.
  7. Yet it never seems to end. Someone always wants to start up a new spring league. https://www.americanfootballinternational.com/column-spring-football-leagues-time-has-come-and-gone/?utm_campaign=coschedule&utm_source=facebook_page&utm_medium=American Football International&utm_content=Column: Spring football league's time has come ... and gone&fbclid=IwAR1YupajHec84KM7Bdcf8oiAZAuvf5fFe3yXxJ8wReAO_mU9Gj9P8VYeOR8
  8. That's how it usually is. One plays until an injury replaces the starter or if losing badly or winning big. In the 84 Grey Cup, Clements lost his contact lens on the field. Or got a finger in the eye, I can't remember. Anyway, he had to come out. While being taken care of on the sidelines, John Hufnagel came in & threw a TD pass (I think) to Joe Pop, I believe. Had Clements not had some kind of a problem, Huff never would have gone in. On the flip side, Leo Cahill alternated Joe Theismann & Greg Barton every series no matter how well one played or how badly the other did. Sometimes, he'd alternate them every play. He felt they were equal & therefore couldn't make a decision as to who was the starter. All it accomplished was divide the Argos as you had players in each qb camps. The team struggled on the field. Only when Cahill made the decision to play Theismann over Barton did the Argos start playing to their potential & made it to the 71 Grey Cup.
  9. Kinda gives you an idea of just how big government deficits really are.
  10. So, Bighill takes a major paycut before the 2019 season which was public knowledge. Wins DPOTY & you sound like you're okay with him making less money than players of lesser ability on the Bombers or other teams because they're Canadian? Sorry, I don't. If a player is elite than they should be paid accordingly. Not because the ratio artificially inflates Canadian players salaries. It's blatantly unfair. I think most fans feel that way.
  11. Hate to say it but that bottom of the roster American is probably better than a bottom of the roster Canadian. How can we sit here justifying the fact that a backup Canadian OL made more money on the Bombers because of his nationality than Adam Bighill? That is a travesty.
  12. The biggest cities capable of supporting the CFL should have teams. Where they are doesn't matter.
  13. Would have loved to see Tom Casey play.
  14. Halfback Richard Crump
  15. Running Back Pat Cantner
  16. I've always wondered why they don't try to put a team in London, Ontario. They have a good 10,000 seat stadium just refurbished for the Univ of Western Ontario Mustangs which probably could be expanded to 24,000 & the City itself is as big or bigger with access to a larger population base than Halifax.
  17. More to that. We have a league where the Commissioner has now taken to lying publicly about the state of the CBA negotiations. He also says he's pushing for Halifax to be a tenth team yet we've heard zero, zip, nada from any ownership group or civic & provincial politicians out there confirming this. Is the previous ownership group still around? No plans to build a stadium anywhere. Matter of fact there's no talk at all about a stadium. If the CFL does grant a tenth team to the Maritimes, It should be Halifax with a population of close to 500,000. However, this is the CFL. They're liable to grant an expansion team to Gander, NL if someone offers the money. Then there's the current CBA negotiations & the shocking news that the CFL's Bargaining Committee led by our own Wade Miller & Scott Mitchell of the Ti Cats proposed eliminating the Canadian ratio & no increase in the salary cap during a 10 year CBA which is absolutely ludicrous. Does this look like a league that has any kind of solid business plan for the future? Or are the Governors fllapping around like fish on a dock out of water? We now have 4 teams that we know of that want to change the game to more of an American version or 4 down football completely with an American sized field & 4 downs. Winnipeg, Calgary, Hamilton & Toronto. Chances are the other 5 teams are in favour as well. We just don't know it. So, what's going on? Changing the rules as a precursor for the CFL to possibly merge with the USFL & XFL? Propose a long term CBA with restricted salaries??? Is the NFL behind this? We just don't know yet. Not a good look for the CFL to be pulling this **** a week before camps start.
  18. TYrone Jones died much too young. Such a sad story. He was so full of life when he played. It was always interesting (& funny) to watch him between plays getting under opposition players skins by always having the last word. Quite a linebacking crew in the 80's. Greg Battle, Aaron Brown, Delbert Fowler, Tyrone Jones, Gary Moten, Vernon Pahl. Darrell Patterson, Paul Randolph, Frank Robinson, James "Wild, Wild" West & Dan Wicklum. These were our linebackers between 1984-90 ion alphabetical order.. There's a reasom we won 3 Grey Cups during that time. They were collectively the best & most dominant in the CFL during that time.
  19. Eugene Goodlow Wade Miller
  20. Middle Linebacker Greg Battle Jessie Briggs
  21. You guys realize that on TSN this past Tuesday night, Randy Ambrosie lied to Farhan Lalji & all CFL fans watching the draft about the state of the CBA negotiations saying they were proceeding well. When Lalji asked him how they were going he made sure to mention that the talks had got off to a great start & how both sides wanted to get a deal done. When Lalji mentioned that the CFLPA had asked for a strike mandate from its members Ambrosie just passed it off as part of the negotiations like it was no big deal. He made no mention that the Players Association & the BOG's were at odds over ratio reduction & the CFL wanting a 10 year deal with no salary cap increase during the life of that agreement. He knew things were going badly but he still lied. Ambrosie smiled & lied to everyone. That is our Commissioner & the face of the CFL. You can't believe anything he says. Ambrosie has no credibility. It's no wonder the Players don't like or trust him. If he can lie to us publicly on tyelevision without any feelings of guilt, imagine what he's like in private dealing with the CFLPA.
  22. Thanks to the "Freedumb Trucker Convoy" which scared the **** out of politicians everywhere, I thinbk that we cam assume that there'll be very little restrictions in the future. No required masking, either. I've stopped wearing a mask because here in Calgary, 99.9% of people don't mask up or social distance anymore. If I wear a mask it won't protect me or anyone around me, so why bother? It's like 2018 all over again. Last Saturday, we went to a play at the Arts Commons Theatre downtown. After the play, we took an elevator down to the street level. My wife & I got on by ourselves on the top floor. We stopped on the second floor where about 7 or 8 people got on & we were literally inches away from one another crowded in like sardines. I hadn't been in a situation like that since the start of the pandemic so I felt very uncomfortable & to be frank, I was bloody pissed off. Common sense & courtesy would have dictated that some should have waited for another elevator but nope., they all had to squeeze in Luckily, we both got off on the main floor as the rest of them carried on to the underground parking lot. I said to my wife, "Well, that was uncomfortable. This could be a mini super spreader." The people who got on were joking & laughing as they didn't seem to care very much. Crazy world. I don't need to get sick because a bunch of total idiots don't care. Six days no symptoms so far so hopefully we got off lucky.
  23. "JC Abbott is a UBC student, youth coach & life long CFL fanatic." In other words, a BC Lions fan boy which is why any article on 3DN that's written has little or no credibility. Funny how they won the Draft, isn't it? Coincidence??
