Interesting CFL personnel Nicknames
SpeedFlex27 replied to Rod Black's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
I remember watching 36 year old Jackie Parker come out of retirement in 1968 when all the BC Lions qbs got hurt & no one could play. I also remember how much in awe the tv announcers were at the time with him putting his helmet back on at his age with no physical preparation at all. Parker was an assistant coach with the Lions at the time & hadn't played since 1965. He played 8 games. The Lions went 2-6 when he came back but Jim Young in his book said it was the damndest thing he ever saw. In those days players didn't take care of themselves like they do today. Training camp was for getting in shape & losing the 10-15 lbs they gained over the winter. There were no protein shakes but they had steak & beer. Most players smoked. Careers didn't last much past 30 years of age. By then, players were so beat up physically they could no longer play. Especially at qb where defensive players could take their heads off. So, in 1968 when a player like Parker came back at 36 after being retired for 3 seasons he was considered a senior citizen. It was a huge deal. Not many players played until they were 36 years of age in the 1960's. Ken Ploen retired at 32. Russ Jackson was 33. Sam Etcheverry was 32. All the punishment they took wearing inferior equipment compared to today took its toll. Back then players even looked older at the same age than their counterparts of today. It's all about lifestyle, diet & nutrition. George Blanda at 46 in 1970. Tom Brady at 46. Times have certainly changed. -
Inadvertently? I'm not sure if you're serious or not? Hey, everyone gets beat. That's the nature of the game. No one ever plays a perfect game. If they did all scores would be 0-0. How many times did Bryant save Nichols ass before that with a key block? Probably plenty of times. IIRC, Nichols held onto the ball a long time on that play & had left the pocket so how realistic is it to expect an OL to hold his block? He has to taken responsibility for not getting rid of the ball sooner as he knew the rush was coming. Again, not sure of your point here so I won't jump all over you... yet.

He can say all the nice things about Edmonton that he wants. Just don't say anything negative about Winnipeg. He was treated extremely well here so why even do that? Plus, you know how Winnipeggers are. Sorta like, you can think your sister is ugly. That's okay. But if anyone else says she is then look out.

I don't know. I hope so.

I wish they'd try to get the CFL on a major sports streaming service like Dazn. Expose the game worldwide. Develop a CFL video game. Look for different revenue sources. Why does our league not even try to think big or outside the box??

Lawler took a shot at Winnipeg saying he likes Edmonton because it's "more scenic" & it's a lot bigger. There's more to do, he says. I'd think that since our teams made him who he is & the fans loved him here that he could have kept his mouth shut & not make going to Edmonton a personal thing. Any outsider who says negative things about My City is fighting words.

Bond was so dominant as a Bomber. I credit him with beginning the turnaround with our OL. Then he went to Edmonton & disappeared. What happened? How do our boundary receivers look with the new hashmarks? Are they getting more work??

Grant would have had to start over & that wouldn'r have been easy. There wasn't much left of the old dynasty when he left after the 1966 season. The cupboards were becoming pretty bare. I think he knew that he took his Bomber team as far as he could as a Head Coach. Things were looking bleak especially qb wise. Ken Ploen was getting injured a lot as his OL was suffering through retirements & young guys coming in with little experience to start. Ploen would pay the price of their inexperience. He missed a lot of time his final season in 1967. Leo Lewis retired after the 1966 season as did other key veterans. Both Ploen & Frank Rigney retired at the same time before the 1968 season. Talk about a double whammy for the Bombers to absorb. All the retirements after Grant left was something his longtime assistant & now new HC Joe Zaleski just wasn't ready for. The opportunity to coach a good team in Minnesota was too much for Grant to pass up. At that time, the NFL was starting to become the juggernaut it is now & player salaries were escalating. The CFL was falling behind both the NFL & AFL. Grant did what was right for him. He earned it.

I did some research, Campbell, Clair, Buono & Matthews won 5 GC's. Grant won 4 in the shortest period of time. Ten seasons. To me, to be in the Top 5 the Gold Standard has to be a minimum of 4 wins.

He was some kind of qb. He would be considered not just a CFL star but a superstar. Zach Collaros plays the game the way Clements would have.

LDC 1986. Tom Clements to Perry Tuttle. Touchdown. I could watch this all day.

He's there.

You won't get any argument about that from me. Grant won 102 regular season games & 4 out of 6 Grey Cups. Most younger CFL fans & media probably don't know that much about him. It was decades before their time. Another coach that barely gets a mention is Frank Clair who won 3 in Ottawa & I believe another one or two in Toronto before coaching in Ottawa. Or Frank "Pop" Ivy who won 3 Grey Cups in a row in Edmonton in the 50's. Hugh Campbell, Wally, Matthews, Bud Grant & Frank Clair are my Top 5.

Your comment won't change my opinion. This has nothing to do with forgiveness. If it was a legit health issue with Eli for not getting vaxxed then my opinion would be different. However, looks like it wasn't. Just that he simply refused to get the jab & it affected our depth on the OL for the Grey Cup. Luckily, there were no injuries in the playoffs or GC. . You only have to look at the Bomber organization & see how they feel. Seems like he was quietly released. If they weren't upset over what happened then I'm certain that he'd be back. He's gone. A free agent. He hasn't signed anywhere. The Bombers don't seem to want him back. That says it all. We all make choices & we have to accept the consequences.
