The Star Trek Thread!

http://www.latino-review.com/news/star-trek-exclusive-trek-is-going-to-return-to-tv

So, GREAT news, Trekkers, CBS is looking to bring Star Trek back to TV.

The last we heard of a Star Trek TV series, was around 2006 before the Abrams movie planted its flag and destroyed most of what we knew (except Spock and - presumably  the plot of Star Trek: Enterprise)  there were two competing versions: Bryce Zabel (writer, Dark Skies) and J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5, but I like crediting him as the good writer on The Real Ghostbusters) pitched a version called “Star Trek: Reboot the Universe” that actually made it online in PDF form.

The second was developed closer to the JJ reboot and was written by producer Geoffrey Thorne, novelist and writer on things like Leverage and Criminal Intent and was called Star Trek: Federation and was conceptualized with producer Robert Burnett, Bryan Singer (the X-Men director and producer of TV’s House among others) and Christopher (director of Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation). This other series wouldn’t reboot the Star Trek universe, but would vault it forward past the DS9 and Voyager series timelines into a far flung future where the Utopia Federation that we knew from other TV series had become boring and complacent.

Federation would have seen the titular group reduced to a mere peacekeeping force as the old ways broke apart. Vulcans withdraw from the United Federation of Planets and reunify with the Romulans, the Bajorans of Deep Space Nine would have also withdrawn and become a planet full of religious monks, like a “Tibet in space.” The Klingons wouldn’t be as warrior-obsessed anymore, but would instead be warrior mystics. The Ferengi would have a female Nagus. The Cardassians would have abandoned war and become an artist/philosopher race.

In essence, Federation would have advanced the timeline of the Star Trek Universe far enough in the future to re-define some of the characters that had been the same since the original series’ inception.

We don’t have too many details about the new Star Trek series CBS is going to get working on, but I spent some time filling you in on Federation, because it seems like the same people who made that pitch could be involved. Bryan Singer's name has been mentioned for the new CBS Trek as a possible Executive Producer through his Bad Hat Harry productions. While "Star Trek: Reboot the Universe" was invalidated by 2008's movie Trek, Star Trek: Federation still has a trio of enthusiastic producers, a script and a writer ready to go should CBS decide to give Singer the ahead to develop this new series.

Robert Burnett is rumored to be working on a non-Trek project with Skydance Productions (Skydance worked with Paramount, McQuarrie and Bad Robot on M:I 5) and simultaneously keeping one foot in the Trek world. He's currently producing (one of the producers) a project independent of all previously mentioned parties,  Star Trek: Axanar, a 90-minute fan-made feature film about "The Four Years War," as mentioned in the TOS episode "Whom Gods Destroy." The film has scraped up and impressive cast and released “Prelude to Axanar” last year to show how this great venture can be pulled off on a fan-donated budget:

That’s the sort of Star Trek product Brunett can use as an example of how producing a reasonably-budgeted TV series set in the Star Trek Universe this day and age should be a piece of cake.

Back to our Federation three:

CBS is interested in Bryan Singer developing (and Singer reportedly loves Prelude to Axanar) and Federation co-conspirator Chris McQuarrie was still game for the project as of last December, if Twitter is to be believed.

As far as when to expect some sort of official announcement about who snagged the NEW Trek production job, that’s a bit tougher to predict.

Star Trek 3 seems to be the Trek Paramount would like us to focus on (Elba for Mogh of the House of Martok, right Simon Pegg?), Singer is only tweeting about making the new X-Men movie and McQuarrie is wrapping up the edit on Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation for later this year. The Star Trek: Federation story document still exists, though, and I’m told Geoffrey Thorne might have taken that treatment all the way to a pilot script before the project cooled, which would allow this show to get off the ground much faster.

For the sharp-eye’d Trek fan, all eyes are on Star Trek: Axanar (official site here) to show off what Trek on a budget can look like. If that can work and CBS can see it work, then we might get a riff on Star Trek: Federation. Either way, CBS is convinced it's a good idea to probe the idea of a Star Trek TV show, so TV Trek’s likely on the way.

I’ve been saying it since summer of 2005…

...no, I’ve been saying it since summer of 1990: There should ALWAYS be Star Trek on TV

I find discovery seems like a 20 episode story played out over 15 episodes. They’re so determined to get from one big plot point to the next they forget to just tell the story.

I have SPACE but I dont think i originally did.  I think I added it awhile back.

If it was a good streaming service I'd add it for Star Trek though.  Most people complaining about it in the US are people who dont want to like it anyway.

well someone online said that Space was part of Basic Cable

Depends who their provider is.

iHeart you're hilarious.

If you havent watched yet and dont want to be spoiled, dont read my review:

I liked it.  It was not perfect.  It was flawed in many ways.  But it was definitely a balls-to-the-wall effort.  TONS of money clearly spent.  Any argument about Orville vs Discovery are totally moot.  Discovery is Star Trek.  And its a film on TV.  VERY cinematic.  Looked beautiful.

The core of the story is interesting and they were careful to make it fit into canon and even had some references to Enterprise (in-directly).  I thought the pseudo religious cult Klingon stuff was weak and cutting back on that would have allowed more room to get to know the human characters we're supposed to care about.

It really a prologue to the "real" story that begins next week.  They spent two hours setting the table.

SPOILER WARNING!

Yes, it was very cinematic looking.  I enjoyed the show.  I didn't like that they not only revamped the look of the Klingon's, but also their culture.  They're not supposed to care about the body after it's dead, yet they put it in a coffin and attached it to the hull.  I had no issue with their new ship design.  They just didn't feel Klingon.  Not only that, but they were so bulked up with costume, they couldn't move very well.  And it was ridiculous how easy it was for Number One to kill one.  I get it was a lucky shot, but still.  But yeah, the Klingon's were really weak.  They should have made them a bit more similar in culture and look to the old DS9 version, where they had character, spirit and honor.  I wouldn't have minded if they had just changed them a little, but this just went too far IMO.

If they destroy the Shenzhou, which is what I guess its what's going to happen, I'll be sad.  I actually like this group and Michelle Yeoh as the Captain.  I wish she was the Captain of the Discovery and they had done this a different way because she is excellent as a starship captain.

Didn't Mike use her phaser? What was it doing set to burn?!?

Not surprised they killed off Yeoh. Seems like the in-thing to do, kill off  "special guest star" in the first hour or two.

Regarding Klingon culture, the idea that they dont care about bodies was a TNG thing.  But the impression I get in Discovery is that respect for the dead is more a specific thing relating to this sect.  It also retro-actively canonizes something from The Voyage Home.  When Spock is studying with the computer he mentioned Klingon Mummification Glyphs.  So it all makes sense.

I also felt the Klingons were killed too easily.  I can accept the Torchbearer because Michael used her thrusters.  But I didnt feel it was very exciting.  One thing I felt lacking in both episodes was a sense of desperation.  It was almost too slick all the time.  When Michael is first confronted by the Torchbearer, I'd have had him whip her ass in a fast, brutal way with her *desperately* backing off, flying around, dodging etc.  Make that fight a struggle to the death.

And then when Michael and Philippa fight the Klingons on the ship, again, pretty boring fight scenes.  T'Kumva striking down at Phillipa and she blocks him?  He's WAY stronger than she is.  Needs more desperation.

When Michael decides they have to attack first, again, I didnt see desperation.  I DID re-watch the episodes and liked them more than I did on first viewing (expectations I suppose).  And she was pretty desperate when talking in the ready room.  But even Sarek told her not to do it...so Im not sure why she felt it was so important that she should attack her Captain.  We get the hint that the Klingons killed her parents.  But because that was only hinted at, we cant identify with that in THIS episode.

I think I would have had the Klingons attack and do an extended fight scene with consoles blowing up, fires etc.  More desperation.  Like the first episode of Lost when the plane crashes and its just wave after wave of sensory input.

Trekmovie

Earlier this week we reported on the US ratings for the debut episode of Star Trek: Discovery and today Bell Media released the Canadian ratings for the first two episodes. Episode 1 brought in 1.17 million Canadian viewers on Space with episode 2 gaining with 1.2 million and according Bell Discovery “delivered the most-watched series audience ever on Canadian specialty TV.” The first hour was also shown on CTV and so the total combined viewership was 2.2 million viewers, making it the third most-watched series debut in Canada for the year.  Discovery’s debut on Crave TV also set a record for that streaming service.

What are the US numbers?

On CBS, 9.6 million.

That does it count those that would have just watched on CBSAllAccess streaming. They expected to hit close to 15 million once DVR numbers were accounted for

so far, very successful.

How do you figure?

Her name being Michael instead of Michelle is really throwing me off.  Just a little gripe but it's annoying.  Don't use a boys name just to show the world there is no "boys name or girls name".  It's annoying.

Thats not why they did it.  There was a scene in last night's episode where another character remarked that she didnt know any other women named Michael.

Ah ok.  I thought it was some weird "shock people" kind of thing.

Im not sure if it didnt start that way,  Apparently its a staple of Bryan Fuller to do that, name characters with traditionally opposite-gender names.  Since he's gone and they kept the name we can only assume there is a reason or they simply liked the idea.  I think Fuller does it, not for some political statement about men and women and gender etc but to be unique and a create a bit of uncomfortableness right away.

A lot of Trek "fans" complained about, especially the jerks who likened it to overly PC, gay-pandering etc.  So it was funny to see a scene where another character actually says the same thing.

Lil things that make up the fabric of the universe.

Or maybe a better reference are the Guild Navigators from Dune.

Are you to young to have watched Michael Learned in The Waltons? She's a 4 time Emmy winner for Best Actress.

I never liked the Waltons.

Michael Learned (also played Katherine Chancellor on Y&R when the original actress was sick) is always the example used.  Which sort of proves the rule.  She's the only one anyone can think of lol.  After three episodes, I dont find her name jarring at all.  Maybe we'll find she was an only child and named after a dear Uncle or grandfather (or Grandmother)
