The TV Thread

Second season of Orange is the New Black launched today.

Anyone else into this?

I have to admit to being a bit of a TV/movie-phile.  I generally buy Blu-Rays when there's a movie I want to see rather than just watching it on PPV or In-demand (I like to collect).

Premium TV has really been leading a creative resurgence in recent years, probably dating back to The Sopranos.  Its nice that Netflix has become a legitimate competitor for HBO (which puts out some really great shows like Sopranos, Deadwood, Boardwalk Empire, True Blood etc).

House of Cards was tremendous.

While cable channels like AMC are getting in on the act, I annoys me a bit.  The Walking Dead would be so much better on Netflix or HBO where they could truly appeal to adults (HBO passed on The Walking Dead when Thomas Jane was attached).

As for Orange, it took me a few episodes to get into last season but Im looking forward to banging out a few episodes tonight.

As an aside, for you Trekies, it was recently the 20th anniversary of the finale of TNG, one of the best Series' Finales in TV history.

Have they done anything of note since that show?

How could you forgot The Sessions (2012)? Not only did she get noms galore for Actress in a Supporting Role but OH OH nudity!

I think Paul Reiser appeared on Stranger things, oh yeah and I think he had a short lived sitcom a few years ago

I've been wanting to introduce the fiancee to Mad About You...wishing it was on Netflix. I'd binge the **** outta that show. I'd be interested in a reboot...always enjoyed them. Had such a crush on HH when I was younger...

The Toys That Made Us

Interesting documentary show on Netflix about the most popular toys. The first episode was on Star Wars. I learned a whole lot about Kenner and how they came to get the Star Wars contract.

It's interesting but something about the way they edit the shows, does not make me love it. I feel like it could be more compelling.

I'm on Episode 2: Barbie.

@JCon thanks for the recommendation on The Toys That Made Us. I’m really enjoying it.

I read there are another four episodes coming eventually. Transformers, Lego, Hello kitty and a Star Trek.

Read a crazy report that Apple might buy Netflix

Apple has over $250 Billion in cash, mostly overseas. The new Tax bill allows a one time repatriation so they could use that cash for a major acquisition.

They apparently grow their cash reserves by $50 Billion per year. Outrageous money.

I don’t buy it. What is likely a boat load of money for a limited series?  Sounds like posturing to me.

Unless money does not motivate her?

I also find it doubtful since it is very hard for aging actresses to find prime roles on major shows and movies.

Different dynamic.  Mulder was the big star.  And the series was actually really good with Agents Dogget and Reyes.  Anderson works regularly so its not a matter of not wanting a "regular series" especially since X-Files is now of the limited series variety.  But it does create buzz for the season.  They could do a third season with her on a limited appearance.  Plus they do have Agent Einstein now...

The premiere was really good, full Mythology.  Im glad I recently re-watched the entire series but I thought they did a pretty good job of bringing the viewer up to speed.

so you're saying Anderson is interchangeable?

Not at all.  But just like they went two or three seasons without Mulder who is arguably more critical to the premise of the show than Scully, they could potentially do okay without Anderson.  And it just so happens that they created two younger versions of Mulder & Scully in the last season (and they show up briefly in the new season debut also).

DD isnt interchangeable but they replaced him with Doggett and Reyes.

End the show with a Netflix film. Got to let stuff go eventually.

Trek, Dr. Who aside.

Before they announced the X-Files revival I always figured it would make for an easy "new cast" revival.  The premise is excellent.  You could easily have new agents take over the X Files just as Fox Mulder did.  I was surprised but happy when they announced everyone was joining the revival.

The biggest issue is that the most popular aspect to the show is also the biggest weight to carry - the mythology.

I REALLY want to see Robert Patrick guest star as Doggett though.  He's excellent.
