Rules around Content

I have a couple of questions for the Mods. This is not criticism, but honest questioning.

I'm sure this has come up in the past, but I'd like it if someone could give me the rationale for editing certain language out of thread responses. Is it simply because we are a family site? Are we required to monitor language in order to maintain this status?

Are specific words automatically replaced by asterisks or is this done manually? If automatic; how is it that some sneak through? (I read a post with an F-bomb embedded the other day. It was refreshing).

In my world, specific language is much less horrifying than some of the inflammatory or hairbrained ideas that many of us come up with. (My Willy for Durant trade thread, for example).

Besides, I'm tired of trying to act like Alan Turing in order to decipher what 17 to 85 is saying, by counting the asterisks and replacing them with letters.

In part, yes, there is no age minimum to post or be a member here.

The site has a swear filter where it looks for specific words and replaced them with asterisks.  When words slip through it is because that variation is not in the list.

Swearing will also tend to escalate the "heat" level of discussions when an argument starts to spiral out of control.  It is also a pre-emptive measure to that.

What you might have seen is that the filter doesn't apply to moderators. So Mike (not picking on him) I know has said **** in the past and it doesn't get turned into stars.

Could be why you saw something get by the filter.

No, moderators get filtered as well.  Although this might be a setting I changed at some point.

Must have been changed at some time then as I remember asking Mike about it directly once.

I think at the time, the filter didn't apply to administrators so we changed it. Not entirely sure though.
