  1. It's definitely a generational gap thing.

People born a long time ago were raised under different conditions, at one point blacks were used as slaves, people were hung from trees, people were hung on the streets.

The world today is now way more sensitive, it's true, it's damn true..  The world wasn't so sensitive back when guys like sterling and our grandparents were born, another time, another world, im not sure most of us would have survived back then. There wasnt even an internet or cell phones or really, tv's. lets all sit around the radio.

The world has changed through the years, for the better or for the worse? it's hard to say actually in the big picture.

It's odd that in 'Merica, they always pride themselves on freedom of speech.. well i guess, freedom of speech only applies if most people agree with it.

    The World be changing again.

I'm not sure how i'd feel if i was in the comfort of my own home, said something, and then the next week it was all over TMZ and the papers.

I think that makes me worry a bit about what the world is actually changing in to

    I see it much differently.

As much as the world frustrates me at times, in this particular case, I have no worries, it's called progress. It's called responsibility, it's called accountability in being a well-adjusted member of society. It has little to do with agreeing or not agreeing with one another or talking privately or talking in public.

Ever hear the suggestion to ask yourself before speaking would I say what I think to be true/valid/appropriate to a wider audience other than saying it to my like-minded friends?

Other than 'Hey I'm allowed to say this, it's called freedom of speech', do I have the confidence, do I have the necessary information, do I have the necessary understanding to support what I say that adds value to the issue, to the discussion other than 'this is what I think, this is how I feel'?

If there is any question, any voice (yours or someone else's) that says either no or I don't know, more critical thinking, more understanding is needed. We all make mistakes when it comes to this, though some are better than others in how they formulate their opinions and articulate their feelings.

Finally, if one's answer to these questions I just posed is 'I don't care, I can say anything I want' then that person has much bigger issues to deal with imho.

Ever since the Mike Sellers era ended, we've never utlized our full back much, probably because we haven't found the necessary player (s). Any worth on the Bombers part to shore up that position more in efforts to utlize more? Or are the cupboards empty when it comes to that position?

We tried out a fullback at the Florida mini camp, his name eludes me right now but he was a LSU alumni with NFL experience. Just doesn't seem to be much use for them anymore.

That's too bad I'd like to utilize that position more to keep the defense off balance.

DL should be a very interesting battle. I'm betting that's where the biggest surprise cut will be.

DB could see a surprise cut too, we have a hell of a lot of rookie DB's.  9 rookie imports, plus guys like Markett, Dunn and a whole bunch of new NI's too.

Kent and Hefney cut the last two years in training camp...

Speaking of Hefney, any appetiite to bring him back for another look considering the amount of DB rooks we have or has that shipped sailed?

  5. #Bombers QB Drew Willy says if there is a CFL strike he'll make sure the players get together to work out somewhere in Wpg. #bn

Nice leadership statement coming from our new QB.   Wonder what facility they would be able to get to practice in.   Are all the players still flying in?  Who is paying for their flights if there is a strike?

Okay wet blanket here. Although admirable on Willy's part, would there not be some injury insurance and legal issues if an agreement is not in place to hold such a thing? I know, how to ruin a good news story. Carry on.

  6. TSN.ca

The Washington Capitals solidified their front office and coaching situations on Monday.

Assistant general manager Brian MacLellan was promoted to the GM's office, while long-time Nashville Predators coach Barry Trotz takes over as head coach.

MacLellan is entering his third season with the club, spending the last two as assistant general manager after spending several years with the team's AHL-affiliate Hershey Bears. MacLellan spent 10 years in the NHL as a player, including winning the 1989 Stanley Cup with the Calgary Flames. He becomes the sixth GM in team history.

"We are extremely pleased to name Brian MacLellan the team's general manager and welcome Barry Trotz to Washington as the Capitals coach,” said owner Ted Leonsis in a release. “After conducting an extensive search for a general manager, we determined that Brian was the best candidate to help us reach our ultimate goal, winning the Stanley Cup. We have witnessed his abilities firsthand, and we have tremendous respect for how he manages people and situations. We feel he has relevant, in-depth knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of our franchise and will be forceful in addressing them. Brian always has displayed tremendous professionalism, passion and commitment to the Capitals. He has his own unique approach, and we are confident in his abilities to lead this organization to new heights."

McLellan is also looking forward to assuming his new position.

“I am extremely honored and excited about the opportunity I have been given with the Capitals,” said MacLellan in a release. “Over the course of my career I have worked in acquiring the necessary skills to excel in this position. We have built a solid foundation, and I look forward to implementing my ideas to get us back to competing for the Stanley Cup. Also, it is a great pleasure to welcome Barry to Washington as the new head coach of the Capitals. Barry's teams have always played with structure, discipline and intensity, and I look forward to him leading us to success for many years to come.”

Trotz was fired by the Nashville Predators at the end of the season after 16 years as the only head coach in franchise history.

Trotz coached 1,196 games with Nashville, second only to Gregg Popovich of the NBA's San Antonio Spurs for longest active coaching tenure in the four major sports.

Trotz says he welcomes his new challenge.

“I am very excited to join the Washington Capitals and want to thank Ted Leonsis, **** Patrick and Brian MacLellan for this opportunity,” said Trotz in the release. “This is a great organization with a strong foundation and a tremendous fan base. I look forward to working with this group of talented players and the quality front office staff this team has assembled.”

Trotz is the only NHL coach to make the playoffs with the same team in seven of eight seasons between 2003-04 and 2011-12 and becomes the Capitals' 17th head coach.

The Capitals fired head coach Adam Oates and did not renew the contract of general manager George McPhee at the end of the season after the team missed the playoffs with a record of 38-30-14.

I've always admired Barry Trotz's approach to the game. Very good hire. If Maurice had not worked out, I wonder if there would have been any chance he would have landed here. Moot point I know. I do believe the nucks missed out though.

FACT: Our proposal provides for a salary cap of 35% of revenues. This percentage is based on a league wide average that excludes the high and low teams as outlined in the 2013 financial statements provided by the CFL. This does not include the new TSN TV revenue!!!!

Gotta love the professionalism of an official statement including FOUR exclamation points at the end of a sentence.

These players are showing how out of their league (no pun intended) they are in these dealings. They're throwing around "facts" that not only leave out important information, but also still don't completely support their position. Let's hope they smarten up before we lose real games.

Higher minimum salary than the league is offering, slightly larger increases overall, and a compromised contract length (5-6 years) should do it!

You forgot to add three exclamation points!!!

  8.

Nobody wants a backup goalie making almost 4 million a year, cap team or not. Reality, That 4 million dollar goalie is either your starter or he is bought out. Halak siged with NYI today, 4 years 18.5 million, aav = 4.5 million.

    Pav's deal is horrible.

Compared directly to other goalies nothing about Pav or his deal will look favourable.

However when you view it within the context of the Jets' build-thru-the-draft philosophy it isn't the disaster some make it out to be.  If they are going to stick to their guns on avoiding free agents with high price tags, and it looks like they will, then consider the following points:

    - When the deal was signed the Jets didn't really have any prospects at goalie.

    - While Pav will never ever ever ever be an elite NHL goalie, I can see what Chevy sees in that he could become a pretty good one.  He will need better coaching to get a handle on his rebound control and he will have to apply himself in the offseason.  This may never happen, but if it does I can see him being a middle of the pack NHL goalie.

    - The timeline on the development of our prospects is still long enough that the length of Pav's contract is a non-issue.  Of the three guys we have my money's on Hellebuyck as our future starter, but that doesn't mean it's happening this September.  More likely in the 2016/17 season after a season with the Icecaps and a season as backup.  Comrie seems to be less ready than Hellebuyck right now.  Hutch is still entirely unproven at the NHL level.  If he can put together a nice run in the playoffs he might make Montoya expendable, but he does not push Pav out of his job.  By the time any or all of these guys are ready to start in the NHL there will probably only be a year left on Pav's contract.  If necessary we can eat that.

    - The non-goalie prospects on this team are still a year or two away from impacting the Jets' fortunes in a meaningful manner.  This team is not likely to be a playoff team this season or next.  That will piss some people off, but if it's part of the process of turning the sad-sack Thrashers into perrenial cup contenders then I can wait.  Jets 1.0 gave us 17 years of scraping into the playoffs only to flame out in the first round over and over again.  Making the playoffs this season is a short-sighted goal.

    - Montaya was the 6th overall pick in 2004 (Ladd was 4th and Wheeler 5th) and the highest rated goalie prospect of that draft year.  He has been typecast as a backup at the NHL level.  While he's currently scheduled to become a free agent, IF the Jets re-sign him (Hutch's playoff performance is probably the biggest deciding factor) he potentially could take over the #1 job if Pav falters once again.  Chevy/Maurice aren't annointing Pav as an undisputed starter when they call him the man going into next year; they are trying to cut out the legs of the news hacks in wpg who want to get pageviews by crying "goaltending controversy" everytime Pav lets in a bad goal.  They have eyes.  They know who's playing well and who isn't.  They also want to be driving the bus, not letting the ginger wonder over at the Winnipeg Stunned try and make the coaching decisions.

None of this sounds particularly appetizing in the short term.  Pav remains the starter.  He might not get better.  The Jets will continue to finish 10th in their conference.

When you step back and look at the long term philosophy it is possible to say that neither Pavelec's play or his contract go against the Jets plan for building a winner, and that rolling the dice on him being the goalie of the future was never really the high-stakes gamble that it seemed like at first glance.  While it would be nice for Jets fans if Pav would play better, things are still largely going according to plan.

And if you really want to take a long term view, Pav's play might be helping build this franchise thru higher draft picks.

Wow, nice way to package it, clever :-)

  9.

Very happy to hear that Robertson has signed, kid has energy and athleticism. Not sure if he'd be a starter this season, but a back-up corner and special teamer is more likely, and there's nothing wrong with that.

I was excited to see him play last season... very disappointed by the pre-season injury

Agreed, even he was so excited about camp last season, which made me feel worse for him when he sustained his injury.

As I haven't seen him play and how he handles himself, any worries about his size (I saw he was listed at 5'9) when playing in the CFL?

  10.

I hate to say this, but if the players strike, I hope the League breaks them.  We're finally turning the corner with the CFL, with multiple massive community investments across the league, mostly financially healthy teams, an expansion franchise and now this TV deal which finally allows the league itself to be profitable but also solidifies the stability of the teams.  And the players think they should get a massive increase?  I think the players deserve to share in the success.  But the CFL's offer does that.  And knowing that no one makes an offer without the expectation of a counter, it means the CFL is willing to pay even more.

If the players thumb their noses at the CFL's reasonable offer, then they can all borrow money from their agents and come back by week 3 for less pay.

Guys make $45,000 a year &  you want to  break them? That's utterly ridiculous. Why not just find another league to follow?

If Cohon's figures are in fact true in his release, the league average is just shy of $93,000. That's plenty.

As a hardcore CFL fan, I struggle with how to really determine if a fair agreement is in place to address short, mid and long term needs. I do know the obvious, there has to be a balance of give and takes on both sides and Mr. Cohon going around the Union, straight to the players (and public), getting reaction, has taken it to the next level.

  11. didn't say a DUI wasn't stupid, said being busted for pot possession isn't that stupid, was just dumb luck.

I dont really consider being stoned to be a DUI, i've driven with plenty of stoners over the years and to be honest, they are some of the best drivers i know.

DUI, with alcohol involved, yeah that's stupid for sure, putting other people at risk there too, for sure that's a no no but... i was talking about the weed charge, never did mention a DUI in my post.

Other than your observation of your stoner friends, what evidence do you have to suggest this is true?

  12. You could make it Frolik instead of Ladd.  Frolik can play centre.  Either way, not happening.

So what do the Jets do about goaltending?  Chevy is on record saying Pavs is the starting goalie next season.

    Lets break this down.

If Pavs is starting, who's the back up?  They seem to want someone that can play upwards of 20 games a season.  Is that Montoya?  Others think Hutch can be the back up as part of his development but given Pavs' struggles would the Jets really take a chance on Hutch?  And what happens if Pavs gets hurt?  Suddenly we have Hutch starting and who backing up?  I think they still want a veteran there.

Question is, do they want a veteran who simply pays when Pavs wants a day off or a veteran who can push Pavs?  I doubt Pavs ever felt threatened by Montoya and regardless of how well he played, the Jets seemed unwilling to let Montoya be anything more than Pavs' relief.  There will be some goalies changing addresses next season.

The big one now is Ryan Miller.  It would seem exceptionally unlikely we'd have a chance at Miller.  But the Pens are rumoured to be interested.  They would then need to trade MAF.  Would we be interested in MAF?  (I would be).  Not sure his trade clause scenario.  We know Pens and Jets have talked before.  Pens want Wheeler.  I'm reluctant to trade Wheeler.  It would depend on the market value for MAF.  I would think the Pens would want top six winger or bottom six depth.  Neither of which we really to spare unless Ladd or Frolik is on the table.

Other goalies to consider would be someone like Hillier.

Which is baffling to me when it comes specifically to him. I understand and appreciate why GM's do this, i.e., 'you're my guy' but it's not warranted for him imo. It also drove me nuts that Pavelec implied in the Media that Noel didn't tell him how great he was unlike how Maurice does. Please . . .

  13.

Crosby takes a lot of **** on the ice and it can get to him. He needs some better support because if he gets frustrated by what is happening on ice then he can't be expected to carry a couple stiffs all over the ice. Or just get someone on his line who will take care of the people taking pot shots at the guy.

That crosscheck he took in the back of the head from Staal should have been a suspension and he didn't even get a minor.

He tears it up in the regular season b/c the refs adhere to the rulebook. When it's inexplicably tossed away in the playoffs he gets mugged and loses his cool. He's too emotional and doesn't play nearly as well when he's mad. The garbage he has to put up with is what makes me want the Pens to pick up somebody with a healthy dose of crazy in their game. Maybe the thought of playing against a guy who wouldn't think twice about putting Lundquist in the hospital would stop Staal from doing something stupid like that.

I actually see it different. I think playoff games nowadays are called more closely than they have every been. Yes missed calls still happen which is frustrating, but at least refs whistles usually still work when the game is close in the later stages of the game.

  14. My depth chart looks a little different.

    QB:  Willy, Hall, Brohm/Marve

    FB: Pontbriand, Fitzgerald

    RB:  Ford, Volny

    WR1: Urrutia (or whoever)

    WR2: Kohlert, Brescacin

    SB1: Moore

    SB2: Watson, Feoli-Gudino

    SB3: Denmark

    LT: January

    LG: Greaves

    C: Goossen, Morley

    RG: Neufeld

    RT: Jones

    DE: Turner, Gatling

    DT: Anderson, Lucas, Thomas

    DE: Vega

    SLB: Banks, Sherman

    ILB: Kuale, Briggs

    ILB: Wild, Eisho

    WLB: Newman

    WCB: Randle, Leggett

    WHB: Washington

    FS: Sears, West

    SHB: Suber

    SCB: Alexander, Bucknor, Jones

    PK: Maher

    KR: Tarver

Canadian starters: Watson, Kohlert, Greaves, Goossen, Neufeld, Newman, Alexander... in certain situations Newman coming out and a 4th DL coming in (Thomas/Lucas).

DI's: Maher, Tarver, Leggett (or other DB), Gatling (or other DE/LB)

I like both these guys but geez seems very thin considering our current tinkering with our O-line.

My apologies for not knowing this but what other RB's will be attending training camp?

  15. There is going to be good competition at virtually every position. I'm most interested to see who emerges DB WR and OL. Would not be surprised to see at least one more WR and RB before camp - ex Purdue receiver Gary Bush? We have so many Canadian coaches who know this 3-down, wider field, offensive motion game inside out. So it seems likely that some very talented American players could lose jobs to Canadian players that are not quite so skilled technique-wise but who are athletic, work hard and have 3-down football smarts and pedigree. It seems work ethic and attitude will go a long way with this new regime. On OL I thought Jarvis Jones and Dan Knapp looked good for us in limited action last season. We look to be building some NI depth on the OL so Jones and Knapp could be among those on the bubble. On D, I can't imagine our defence without both Sears and Washington but you never know, players like Sears and even Suber could be in trouble since the competition looks to be so much improved.

Will Sears last the season is the rhetorical and obvious question I have. I sure hope so.

  16. Ottawa's depth chart is seriously ugly.

I am happy that Aaron Hargreaves will finally get a shot after 7 years though.

Although some seem to think there is no pressure on Burris this year because its an expansion team with low expectations, I think he has a lot to shoulder this year inhow he carries himself as a leader. It will be interesting to see how that unfolds this season.

  17.

hate saying this but if the stamps cut mo price, i hope the bombers make a call to him, so he said something on twitter, and yeah it was pretty homophobic but... he's a darn good football player.

    Moore,Price,Denmark. <-- thats sick.

And I hate to agree, but here we are

Same reason I voiced on the Lapolice thread, bringing Price here would not happen if indeed our new regime are true to their words when it comes to leadership, culture etc.

  18.

If you read Price's tweet correctly, you'd know that his comment was not homophobic.  He's stating that his faith doesn't allow him to accept what happened.  He himself has nothing against the guy.  If you read both tweets you'd know.

Now why he decided to post that at all, I have no idea.  Most of those guys are just loud mouths that like to blab a lot.

Good God.  Come on.  You're smarter than that.  "I dont hate you, just the way you were born".  Its like KKK who now like the "We don't hate black people, we just love white people" BS.

Price is the worst kind of coward.  He's just religious enough to know his hick opinion is in the bible but too stupid to realise the bible is the worst source for supporting an opinion like this.  And, worst kind of coward because he cant even own his opinion fully.

Imagine if, in 2014, he tweeted "nothing personal.  I like you as a person but my faith doesn't allow me to support black people (or women, or whatever)".  Its the same thing.  This is the human rights cause of our time like equal rights for minorities and women were previously.

    Should have cut him.

My guess is that's what the Stampeder organization is presently considering as one of it's options in how they will handle it 'internally'.
