Maybe not enough room to fight. Although I know there have been some nasty incidents outside. Perhaps things are different on a Monday but when I've been there there have always been lines and the drinks arent cheap. I hate waiting in line since I worked in a bar most of my adult life so we always received courtesy (no lines/no cover).

I also enjoyed the Visit. Didnt love it. But enjoyed it. Thought the outcome was a bit odd and sort of making fun of "elderly" to an extent.

The Martian was phenomenal. Best film of the year.

Interesting Terminator news (or no news) via Latino Review: Audiences were understandably skeptic when it was announced that "Terminator: Genisys" would kick off a brand new trilogy for the franchise. Between "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," and "Terminator Salvation," fans had grown to distrust the quality of the series. The actual release of "Terminator: Genisys" didn't do much to inspire confidence. With a 26% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film stands as the worst critically-received in the franchise, and with lackluster gross of $89 million, domestic audiences really seemed to have taken that bad word of mouth seriously. But of course, we now live in a global world, and when the foreign box office receipts came in at over $350 million, it became clear that audiences were liking something about the film. Because of this fact, it was a bit surprising when David Ellison of Skydance Media said they were putting the franchise on indefinite hold. Now, it looks like that's not necessarily the case. At TheWrap's 6th Annual Media Leadership Conference, Skydance chief creative officer Dana Goldberg painted a slightly different picture for the future of the franchise. "In terms of 'Terminator,' the worldwide market paid attention. And we're not taking the domestic number lightly necessarily. We're going to do a worldwide study and really talk to audiences about 'Terminator' and what they loved, and maybe what didn't work for them so that the next step we take with the franchise is the right one." The panel mediator then went on to ask Goldberg if the planned trilogy--as well as the TV show--were still on the table. "We've always said from the moment that we announced it that audiences are the only ones who get to decide if you actually get to make the trilogy. It's really up to them…Do we intend to have a next step with 'Terminator?' Yes we do. We are not going to begin production at the beginning of next year, because it would be silly not to listen to what audiences have to say, and adjust accordingly." So the franchise isn't quite on hold indefinitely, but is taking some extra time to do the necessary market research to ensure the success of the next installment. This is both hopeful and concerning news. While it's great that the studio isn't planning on blindly continuing with what DIDN'T work, taking the time and money to do research seems like a potential dead end. When it comes to filmmaking, if you try too hard to cater to the mass audience's expectations, you're likely to end up with a bland product, devoid of any real character or defining traits. Essentially, you end up with something that no one has a problem with, but that no one really loves, either. I'm no studio head, but were it up to me, I'd cut the budget to under $20 million, find a talented filmmaker with a unique vision, and base the next steps on that. Of course, going with a great film and a commercial film are two completely different things, so who's to say that would work out, either? ****I think what worked was Arnold and some of the nostalgia of the first two films. They glazed over that, dismissed it really. Making the machines have a leader (like the Borg Queen) was stupid. Altering John Connor's path was stupid. Using poor actors was stupid.

After 39 years on the air at 680 CJOB, Brian Barkley has announced he is retiring at the end of October. The longtime traffic reporter will deliver his final traffic updates on Friday, October 30. Barkley started his radio career in 1976, doing evening and weekend newscasts for 680 CJOB, but he is most famous for his 25 years as Winnipeg’s most trusted voice in traffic. ““I loved being in touch with our audience, it gave me a positive spin because the vast majority of people I talked to were friendly, funny, caring and concerned,” says Barkley. “Just a short time ago a man spotted me and stuck his hand out and said, ‘Thank you, you’ve saved me so much time over the years with your traffic reports.’ At that same instant another man did the same thing and very graciously said much the same thing. They were both so sincere, I was very moved… this is what I’ll miss most.” He announced his retirement Monday morning on Winnipeg’s Morning News.

Game 1 : Jets @ Bruins

Ted Wyman @Ted_Wyman #NHLJets Nic Petan on playing first #NHL game: “It's pretty special.. I called my mom, my dad, my brother and they’re all making the trip." -
*Miz voice* "Really? REALLY?"

@Ted_Wyman: #NHLJets captain Andrew Ladd says he won't answer questions about his contract after today. 1/2 @Ted_Wyman: 2/2 Ladd also said he hasn't decided if he'll continue to talk contract with #NHLJets during the season

I tend to agree. Unless the player is really special. Despite not being a long-time Jet, I'd say Teemu qualifies. It wont bother me if he only gets "honored" but I would also be fine with him being retired. Ofcourse, the fact he wore 13 only because 8 was unavailable changes that a bit too.

Should all workplaces have mandatory testing for illegal drugs? Why just professional athletes? If you died from a heroin overdose, would it be your employers fault for not testing you? I work in a union environment so if the company wanted drug testing and the union allowed it, sure. But ofcourse I would not like that. However, sports is different. The players are public figures. From the PA side of things, ofcourse you want to do your coke and have no one find out. From the NHL perspective, they are a brand that has 700+ public figures representing them. They need to protect that. They already have means within the CBA to take action against players that bring disrepute to the brand. And they have means within the substance abuse program.' So the fact they can act on a player that is grossly impacted by his addiction or behavior really, in my mind, precludes the idea that they shouldnt have the right to test and act on those results. WWE is a non-competitive (in the general sense) company and they test for illegal drugs. UFC tests for illegal drugs. The NFL test, but only in the off-season. They test for coke, pot, Opiates etc. The NHL has often taken the burried head approach to things. They should come out and be the front runners in this. Not only to protect the game from being sullied by drug busts/deaths (Boogaard died from using Opiates with booze) and to protect the players from themselves.

Sandra Bland Arrest Video

I agree. If you're someone who thumbs their nose at police, now is a good time to do it with DA's and Crowns quick to drop charges at the mere whiff of police impropriety. In this video, absolutely the police reacted wrongly, striking her. They are supposed to be trained to get suspects to comply using pressure points and leverage holds, not striking them. But the woman WAS resisting arrest. "Help me help me"...good grief. I guess she was truly afraid she would be abducted off the street by the cops and whisked away to a dungeon prison somewhere. Every legal expert discussing these incidents says the same thing "If you think the cops are wrong, comply fully and fight the system later". But realistically, had this woman complied, she wouldnt have had a case to whine about the cops later. That's another issue for the police in this case... they testified (at least one officer did) that she wasn't struck during her arrest, so now she gets to sue for more damages. This was broad daylight with multiple witnesses around... it amazes me that the cop thought there wouldn't be some video of the incident out there in this day & age. I've long advocated in threads like these that 1) cops need better training 2) there is lack of "heroics" in many police forces. And what I mean by that is, it used to be cops would would their health on the line all the time. Now, you look at them funny and they pull out their tazers. A tazer should be used in place of a gun not in place of physically making an arrest. 5 cops beating a suspect because they wont put their hand behind their backs is not heroic. And as far as training, jobs like police work attract cowboys. Not all, ofcourse, but it does. And sometimes we need cowboys. But police need to be trained to be completely cool and unemotional under pressure so they are not prone to strike when not needed, tell a woman to mind her f'n business when its unwarranted and to be aware that every single thing they do at all time while on the job should be assumed to be video taped. And it should be assumed the video will only capture what the cop did in response to an act, not the original act. Its a customer service job now. And like you said, why lie? Its instinctive for cops to protect each other. If I was a chief, I'd fire cops for lying about incidents. It completely ruins them for any potential incident that might happen in the future. If you have to lie, then you were wrong. And its over. It used to be that when a cop told a story, everyone from other cops to superiors to Crown to media to public took them at face value. It's going the other way now. And its a shame because it puts cops in danger. There was a case this week of some 90's rap group (not named) filmed a "viral" video intended to be their comeback where they followed a cop around and filmed the cop while they were holding a gun (the stalker was holding the gun) with the implication being they could shoot the cop at any time they wanted. Abject stupidity. -
I think the last time I was at the Pal was about two years ago. Had some friends from Brandon coming through town and it was suggested to take them to the Pal. They hated it and wanted to go home. Took them to Cowboys instead. Loved it. Also had to threaten someone to stop toughing a friend everytime she walked by (at the Pal) Spent most of my night at the Pal either standing at the bar waiting for a drink or wishing a server would happen by.

Taking over 4Play is a no brainer. When I worked at the LID, I tried to convince the owner to buy 4Play back when the MTSC opened. Maybe not as hot an idea then as it is now...lol But man, The Pal is just the worst bar in the city. I know its sort of trashy chic and its cool to say you love it. But it is such a dump. The service is horrible too. Over-crowded all the time (funny how some bars get away with that and others have the LC camped out) and just the nastiest, creepiest crowd groping at anything resembling a female that comes within their pawing radius.

Someone (cant recall who but I think it was a journalist who did a story on this) was on 1290. I just caught part of it but he said every single team has "1...2...or 10 guys who partake". Should be a no-brainer to make illegal drugs against the rules. Not to mention I assume cocaine could be considered a performance enhancer. ' Wasnt OV accused of being on something? Test everyone. Fine/suspend those that are caught. Anyone with illegal substances in their system are automatically entered into the NHL's substance abuse program for referral to counseling/rehab and subsequent testing to ensure they are clean. Thats how it should be done. Or they could wait until someone dies. Either or.

Good news. What a dump (too bad about talks of relocating) A popular Winnipeg nightclub is set to close, but will most likely resurface downtown. The Palomino Club will shut down in early 2016 to make room for condominiums. It will hold its last bash Saturday, January 2. The Pal has been a Portage Avenue landmark since it opened in 1988 as a predominantly country bar. Over the years, it has attracted many celebrities, professional athletes and even hosted weddings for customers who met there. The club owns the piece of land on Portage between Goulding and Minto streets, which includes a former chiropractic clinic. It's working with a local developer to turn the property into condos. Managing partner Cary Paul said it made financial sense to develop the land into condos and find a newer venue for the club to expand. Paul said this likely won’t be the end for the institution, as he owns the name. He and other partners are currently in negotiations to open The World Famous Palomino Pub and Club in downtown Winnipeg across from MTS Centre, a two-level establishment that would have the same atmosphere as the current location. The target opening date is the first week of February so they could be in business for the last third of the NHL season. Paul hopes to retain his staff, as many have worked at the Pal for decades. One possible location downtown is 323 Portage Avenue, the former site of 4Play Sports Bar. The bar closed at the end of 2012 and though the building had been considered for other entertainment concepts, remains vacant.

I think Hull deserves respect for what he did and what he meant but as time goes on the "cute" stories about him arent so cute anymore. Hard to honor a guy like that. Dale, on the other hand, will be honored. And ofcourse Teemu, the most beloved Jet of all.

Sort of interesting how people are diving off the titanic. I didnt see the last couple of debates but some comments I read were that Mulcair was "nicer" in his exchanges whereas Trudea was interrupting and talking over...guess that works. People either tune out the loudest voice or hear the loudest voice. But with polls so close, you just never know. I suspect a minority either way. If Liberals get a minority, Harper steps down and it paves the way for a Liberal majority and a Conservative re-build which is unfortunate.
-
A two-way race between the Liberals and Conservatives continues, with the NDP nine points behind the front-runners, according to the latest tracking by Nanos Research for CTV News and the Globe and Mail. The latest numbers, which were released on Oct. 7, show: The Liberals at 34.3 per cent support nationally The Conservatives at 32.1 per cent The NDP at 23.0 The Greens at 4.6 ***what a decline by the NDP. Who will be looking for a job first, Mulcair or Harper?
-
When making an agreement with multiple nations it's never going to be perfect. If it was then the other countries lost Canada sits at the big boy table which is Strange because I thought Harper couldn't do that. Oh well. Most of the coverage has been strong support for the deal

Sure, why not. Whatever. WWE Network and Wrestlemania
The Unknown Poster replied to Goalie's topic in General Discussion
Too long but ratings are down. The biggest issue is raw sucks. Bad story telling. Boring characters. And they've forgotten all the tricks of manipulating the audience. They trot out Steph and Hunter every week and most weeks they have nothing to do. So they are forced to do something. Steph usually ends up emasculating or burying people. They flip heel face heel face sometimes in the same segment. Cools everyone's heat. Cena is going away so again he's the top dog. They are utterly clueless. -

I'm of two thoughts. The police over reacted. She absolutely resisted arrest. -
Didn't Little switch from 10? How about 13? Weird case. Teemu set his records wearing 13 but wore 8 the rest of his career (I think). Chipman said there will be a third jersey for the heritage Classic. I suspect that is when we will start honouring past contributors to winnipeg hockey.
