Game 20 : Canucks @ Jets

Id like to see Ehlers-Scheif-Wheeler but that might be a bit unbalanced. -
From September but I think relevant to the discussion of refugees (Washington Post): The world has been transfixed in recent weeks by the unfolding refugee crisis in Europe, an influx of migrants unprecedented since World War II. Their plight was chillingly highlighted on Wednesday in the image of a drowned Syrian toddler, his lifeless body lying alone on a Turkish beach. A fair amount of attention has fallen on the failure of many Western governments to adequately address the burden on Syria's neighboring countries, which are struggling to host the brunt of the roughly 4 million Syrians forced out of the country by its civil war. Some European countries have been criticized for offering sanctuary only to a small number of refugees, or for discriminating between Muslims and Christians. There's also been a good deal of continental hand-wringing over the general dysfunction of Europe's systems for migration and asylum. Less ire, though, has been directed at another set of stakeholders who almost certainly should be doing more: Saudi Arabia and the wealthy Arab states along the Persian Gulf. As Amnesty International recently pointed out, the "six Gulf countries — Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain — have offered zero resettlement places to Syrian refugees." This claim was echoed by Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch.

A new $85 million Pan-Am Clinic will be built adjacent to the Reh-Fit Centre on Taylor Avenue. Reh-Fit, a not-for-profit medical fitness facility, will build the new clinic, while the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority will lease the space. Dr. Wayne Hildahl, Pan-Am's CEO, said the current clinic is 30 years old and space there is cramped. Plans are to build an 85,000 square foot building just east of the Reh-Fit Centre. That would be 20,000 square feet more than the current clinic. Premier Greg Selinger said the province would pay the $40 million cost of equipping the new clinic while Reh-Fit would be responsible for the $45 million building.

Game 19 : Jets @ Blues
The Unknown Poster replied to FrostyWinnipeg's topic in Winnipeg Jets Discussion
I didnt have an issue with their "re-tool". I looked it like this. They had two 'cores', the Atlanta core of Ladd, Buff, Wheeler, Little with a young group including Kane, Bogo, Burmi and soon to be joined by Sheif, Trouba, Lowry etc. So to me, they had the opportunity to compete in the short term (sort of now-ish) and with the waves of youth coming up, compete for years and years. In hindsight, they could have traded everyone for picks and prospects and been the Oilers and probably got a few higher picks and a few more prospects. But looking at the core group of talent that came with the Jets, while shallow on depth, there was talent to build around. There still is. Wheeler and Little are top line players, no question. Wheeler could be called a 2nd tier elite player. Im not sure they should trade the works right now. But the tough decision with Ladd and Buff is timing. If the team was winning and they were big parts of it, you can justify the expense. But the team is struggling and they arent being difference makers, how do you justify signing guys their age for 6+ years at top dollar deals? Because it leads to the potential of having some of your stud youth, whether that be Scheif, Trouba, Connor whomever, eventually put you in a budget crunch and it could be very difficult to trade a 35 year Buff making $7 Million/year. All things being equal, I'd love to keep Ladd and Buff. But neither guys should get a 6+ year deal. And both pose different problems. I would actually sign Ladd longer than Buff because I think he will be useful longer. But Buff's position and talent means he deserves more money, but lesser term. Ladd deserves (or its wiser as a team) to get longer term but less money. Ideally, neither guy goes beyond 4 years. If the Jets know they cant keep both, I'd trade Ladd (which is a switch for me). But it really comes down to what can you get for either. Offers for Ladd might be good but offers for Buff might be amazing and perhaps you take the "amazing" offer and re-sign Ladd and hope you can re-tool the D. The other issue is perception. Buff is perceived as a very special talent. We traded Kane (and regardless of reality, he is considered an elite level young player). We dont want the perception to be that we trade our elite talents because they either dont want to be here or we dont want to pay them. I think some Jets players made remarks akin to that saying thing like "when you fight and sacrifice for the team you want to know they appreciate it". At the same time, is Ladd's agent trying to play the Jets with those circumstances? Like, well the Jets cant afford to lose Ladd so they will over-pay. He IS the captain but he doesnt deserve more money than Blake Wheeler. -
Odd that a soccer game would attract a stadium full of Islamic radicals.

I think any of the guys you mentioned is capable of doing what the Jets' 4th line is being asked. 5 minutes a game (or whatever it is).

Washington Redskins Urged to Change Team Name
The Unknown Poster replied to The Unknown Poster's topic in General Discussion
FARGO, N.D. -- University of North Dakota backers have selected Fighting Hawks as the school's new nickname, the school announced Wednesday. The predatory bird mascot was declared the winner after receiving 57 per cent of the vote compared to 43 per cent for Roughriders in the two-nickname runoff. The vote was open to people with UND ties, including students, staff and alums, and 27,378 votes were cast. The new nickname replaces the Fighting Sioux name that was retired by the state Board of Higher Education in 2012 because the NCAA deemed it "hostile and abusive." -

G&M Police in Mississauga shot a young man whom they suspected was wearing an explosive device just hours after attackers in Paris killed 129 people using assault rifles and suicide vests. The man was released from hospital after being struck four times shortly after 1 a.m. on Saturday, police said. Hamza Mohamed Abdi, 26, faces one charge of possessing an imitation weapon for a dangerous purpose, two charges of uttering death threats and one charge of failing to comply with a recognizance.

This is why I was so certain Petan would go to the Moose. It flies in the face of the Jets' code of development. Ehlers, like you said is a special case. Copp to a degree might be special in that he was American and had to be "convinced" to turn pro, no? And part of that convincing might have been some assurances he'd play for the big club rather than the Moose. It really makes you wonder if it came down to budget. I mean, its not that much money, but why else would you not explore re-signing guys like Tlusty and Stepniak who could play bottom six effectively and put rookies in those spots? Im not even arguing they should have signed those two guys....but it seems they made a conscious decision to go younger and cheaper and accept the risks that come with it. There has to be at least 3 guys on the Moose right now that can play 5 minutes a game on the 4th line and probably be more effective in that role, than Petan where as Petan would likely benefit a lot from being a top line Center with lots of ice time in all situations. Westwood talked about this today with Trouba saying the difference between a player hitting expectations and being a "flop" can be confidence. I wonder where Petan's confidence is right now. And there still must be a plethora of bottom six guys the Jets could swing a trade for that would cost them next to nothing. If the idea was to not be committed to guys past this year, I find it difficult to believe they couldnt sign anyone for one year. Unless they are waiting fro Raffl to return and feel he's a better bottom six option... but again, it's robbing the Moose of talent and hindering development there.
-
The Moose will get better as they age and more young talent drops in. But they really miss out on not having Petan there this year. And one of Postma/Pardy to help out the D.

Saint-Denis, France (CNN)A violent, hours-long operation in a Paris suburb ended Wednesday with two suspected terrorists dead, seven detained, new attacks potentially thwarted and further proof, according to French President Francois Hollande, that his country is "at war" with ISIS. The Saint-Denis raid targeted the purported ringleader of last week's bloody Paris attacks and came as the suspects were "about to move on some kind of operation," according to police sources. Gunfire and explosions shook the northern Paris suburb of Saint-Denis early Wednesday as heavily armed police stormed a building where suspects linked to Friday's deadly terrorist attacks were believed to be holed up. Two terrorist suspects have been declared dead, one of them a woman who blew herself up with a suicide belt, according to authorities. Seven other people were arrested, including three men who were removed from an apartment at the heart of the raid. Five police officers were lightly wounded and a police dog was killed during the operation. In their push to unravel the attack plot and the suspected network behind it, counterterrorism and intelligence officials say investigators have uncovered a clue that could be a big break: cell phones believed to belong to the attackers. According to the officials, one of the phones contained a message, sent sometime before the attacks began, to the effect of: OK, we're ready. "It points to a sort of organization," CNN terrorism analyst Paul Cruickshank said, "an attempt to try to synchronize what was going down." But cracking into their communication won't be easy. Investigators have found encrypted apps on the phones, which appear to have left no trace of messages or any indication of who would have been receiving them, according to officials briefed on the French investigation.

Off The Record Cancelled amid Bell Cuts
The Unknown Poster replied to Rich's topic in General Discussion
Ill hand it to Landsberg, he treated wrestling with mainstream appeal years and years ago and scored some big interviews at key times (Bret right before he jumped to WCW but had made the decision, Vince after the Screwjob, Bischoff around that time too). If I recall, TSN was a huge partner of WWE so he leveraged the relationship and the wrestling shows were big ratings for OTR. But I agree, he became tough to watch as the years went on. -
I agree. Undoubtably his reaction was much different.

What do you think Putin's reaction was?

To answer your question, I think that this definitely would have affected the election. Harper would have won a majority, no question. I also have to wonder if these attacks are going to cause the cancelation of Justin's climate change party in Paris next week? I dont want to insult the climate change people because I believe being kind to the earth is important but if Trudeau appears more concerned with climate and playing world leader rock star than the issue of security, refugees and the role of the nation in the Middle East, he's going to begin shedding support. I saw some blowback on line after the Paris attacks. I understand the G20 is important but the photos of him "working" seemed a bit tone deaf. What a leader does is more important than what he is perceived as doing but what he is perceived as doing is an important aspect of leadership. Bush was embraced as a great leader in the aftermath of 9/11. He spoke strongly and resolutely. Dont want to debate Bush, just saying. We have major concerns and our PM is not here. When he does get here, there will be an expectation of him truly showing up as the leader. And I hope he rises to the occasion.

is that a reliable source on Toby? I find that hard to believe. He's a good D and by far our best LHD. Saw on another forum the fancy stats have Toby and Buff in the top 20 or so of D-men in the league. Also interesting that Chevy is chasing a top six forward when the D seems to be the bigger problem.

It explains why Kane was suddenly put in to a program with Seth, to try and rehabilitate him up the card. I dont mind it. The wrestling wont be good but sometimes a good gimmick is a nice distraction. I think there is enough good will between the fans and Kane/Taker that its a decent draw. Maybe I'm in the minority but I just think the Wyatt Family is dreadful. I think the Family angle is just about at its end. The only things fans like is their ring entrance. It's to the point that when these guys come on I just change channels. I can watch MNF. I dont disagree. Its more of the fact you can put anyone with Undertaker/Kane because they are interesting (generally) and over. WWE really dropped the ball with Bray. He was so over when he came in and they did their usual pull-back they do with new guys that get over and just stunted him. And then the ill-advised split of the group when the fans were into them (and Harper and Rowen were pretty over as a monster team too). Harper is really good and deserves better. We'll see what happens on Sunday. I suspect WWE does a big turn or swerve because they know they have to. With ratings sinking so much and a really shallow pool of guys who are over, they need something. I think Hunter teasing a new Authority guy is a bit heavy-handed, but that's WWE where Hunter or Steph have to be on screen at least twice per hour. -

Buff Burmi probably being shopped. Maybe Ladd too. Let the B Schenn to Winnipeg speculation begin Yup, some more rumors of Philly and Winnipeg still talking. Dreger went on to report it was not an easy trade market and that nothing was happening. if they did land a top six, who in the current top six gets pushed down (or moved). Lets assume Ladd stays, just for gigs and shittles.

So Top Gun 2 continues to inch towards reality. Val Kilmer confirmed he has been asked to reprise his role from the original. I hope he gets in shape for it! Rumour floating around that Hayden Christianson is set to reprise his role as Anakin/Vader in Star Wars VIII. I'd file this one under "dubious" and hope that if a "Force Ghost Anakin" is needed that Disney scrubs Hayden from the end of Return of the Jedi and in future use goes with an actor to play the older Anakin. Although I would br surprised if we dont get some Force Ghosts in the new trilogy. There are rumours that Yoda will appear and Im banking on a cameo from a made up Ewen MacGregor too, so Anakin is possible (perhaps even Palpatine). Rumour could be confusing two films. The "prequel" films about the chase for the Death Star Plans that takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope allegedly has Darth Vader as a character. I'd be surprised if they used Hayden though as there would be little point if he's in the suit the whole movie. Get someone more physically imposing.
