  1. Dan Knapp is a physical freak. Some players were running half field sprints and Knapp destroyed them all. His upper body is insanely huge and all muscle.

At the end of practice, the O-line were doing their now regular gassers. Today the Quarterbacks joined in. Drew Willy is our fastest QB but he only managed to beat Knapp by a nose. :o

Another point. I thought I noticed Volney getting a lot of reps today. This might be a way of getting an extra import receiver in on obvious passing downs.

  2. So, he was picked up by the Stamps a couple of days ago:

The Calgary Stampeders announce a number of signings as the club’s rookie-camp roster takes shape.

    ...

Gerald McRath (import LB): In three seasons with the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, McRath played 40 games — including 12 starts — and recorded 120 tackles as well as 1.5 sacks and one interception. He was a two-time first-team Conference USA all-star selection at Southern Miss.

Don't know what to make of this. On the one hand it's tempting to crow about how the Stamps are picking up our cast-offs but, on the other, if he makes the team it could be embarassing.

  3. Oh did anybody else see the guy that was running around on the far side of the field? At one point he took off in a sprint and looked like the next coming of Donavan Bailey.  Wow was he FAST.  I thought it might be Aaron Woods.

I noticed him sprinting down the far sideline twice. And yeah, did he ever look fast.

One of the guys I was sitting with pointed out that one of the things that was different this year from previous years, was that they were practicing the waggle at the beginning of practice. None of the American kids has ever had to do this before so it's good that they're being taught how to do it.

  4. I have to say Walters reminds me of Taman... especially in this draft - 'overpaying' to get his guy Briggs, going to OL when in doubt, trading for Neufeld

I'd say this is a very decent draft with potential to be 'out of the park' if Neufeld works out at RT

Overpaying? What rounds are you talking about here. They wanted the guy and had to move up to get him. Give Walters a break!

    O'Shea was happy with it:

And while taking highly-touted Simon Fraser offensive lineman Matthias Goossen second overall on Tuesday night will definitely help in an area of need for the club, it was a swap of draft picks that may prove to be [Walters] most shrewd move.

"When Jesse Briggs started to fall a little bit, you could just see Kyle perk up in his chair. ‘We might have a chance here,'" said head coach Mike O'Shea of the Blue Bombers war room on Tuesday night. "And then (he's) working the phone and pulls the trigger and we move up to get a guy that we really value. I think that was a great move. It was fun to be sitting right there watching him work."

  5. O'Shea I think is going to be a hell of a coach... it's the coordinators I am sceptical of.

O'Shea was very impressive at yesterday's Fan Forum. I think we're going to see an inspired group of players this year. And we won't see guys on the sidelines yukking it up behind the Coach's back.

  6. Here's Smith's account:

I can assure you it was not my intention to use a banned substance or to try to beat the system. I did not properly research the contents of supplements I obtained online and I will accept the consequences of my actions.

Since it was inadvertent on my part, I have asked to have my B sample tested and am waiting for the results.

    And the CFL's reaction:

  7. Etcheverry's Pissing me off already, and we haven't even begun main Camp. I hope O'Shea had an interim in mind when he hired the guy... Anyone on our staff have DC experience?

Actually Pat Tracey is a DC in CIS... not sure how hard it is to transition to CFL

I don't think we want that Pat Tracey as our DC (there's a Wiki bug).

The CIS Pat Tracey might do OK:

There are plenty of reasons to think Tracey will do well in the CFL. His Guelph career was very promising (and he coached there while new Bombers' head coach Mike O'Shea and current GM Kyle Walters played for the Gryphons, likely the connections that got him on Winnipeg's radar), and he did even better at Queen's, initially running the Golden Gaels' special teams and serving as their recruiting coordinator before taking over as defensive coordinator in 2001. He's held that post for the last decade-plus, and his defences have frequently ranked among the country's best; his work was crucial to Queen's 2009 Vanier Cup win as well.

    ...

It's interesting to see Tracey leave for a CFL job, as his name's repeatedly come up in recent head-coaching discussions at the CIS level. CFL assistant jobs do tend to pay more than CIS ones, though, and they can also lead to further opportunities. He's not the only one to make the jump, either: this hire's just one of several from the CIS ranks recently, including Montreal's Noel Thorpe (who did very well as the Alouettes' DC last year after returning from the university level and is widely seen as potentially the next head coach there)

  8. Just announced:

I like the sound of this. Hopefully it will remove the problem of slow golf tournaments interferring with the start of CFL games. And maybe we'll get to see some CIS games.

  9. Drew Edwards@scratchingpost14 mins

This is the fourth time in seven years that the #Riders have exceeded the #CFL salary cap. Also over in 07, 08, and 2010. #CFL

But this may be more of a worry to Rider fans:

    Darrin Bauming@DarrinBauming36 mins

There were recent reports that the Riders had some of last year's salary deferred to this year. They still went over the cap.

So they may only have peanuts to pay this year. And you know the old saying "You pay peanuts, you get monkeys."

  10. More on playbooks:

“When I was in Saskatchewan, we had these sophisticated smart boards where we did our teaching. At the end of every presentation, I would always ask, do you have it? And if every player said yes, I would push a button and it would all be gone,” Etcheverry explains. “And that’s how I’ll work here too. A lot of coaches over the years have prided themselves on stealing ideas from others. The most fundamental way to protect our ideas is to never write anything down.”

That’s right, don’t write anything down, which means there's no defensive playbook either.

    http://www.bluebombers.com/article/the-etcheverry-difference

The way I remember it, Etch's defense was fun to watch. Hope that's still true.

  11.

Kinda figured you knew him pretty well. You will quickly learn we have an extremely passionate fan base here and are very championship Hungary (it's been a while)

Is that similar to championship Austria or Romania?

    *grumble* *grumble* stupid autocorrect....

LOL and here I thought you were drawing a subtle analogy between the Bombers and the Golden Team, Hungary's National Football team of the 1950's:

The team inflicted notable defeats on then-footballing world powers England, Uruguay and the Soviet Union, before the 1956 Hungarian Revolution caused the breakup of the side.

Between 1950 and 1956, the team recorded 42 victories, 7 draws and just one defeat, in the 1954 World Cup final against West Germany. Under the Elo rating system they achieved the highest rating so far recorded by a national side (2166 points, June 1954).

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Team

More recently, though, like the Bombers, Hungary's current team has been a flop.

  12. Interesting conversation just on twitter:

    Nik Lewis@nikel1811 mins

I must be in the dog house because they told me they wasn't interested in signing me. Looks like I'll be on recruiting visits this yr.

    Korey Banks@24Banks9m

    @nikel18 Winnipeg?

    Nik Lewis@nikel188m

@24Banks what up homie how are u doing. Hope life is treating u well

    Korey Banks@24Banks3m

@nikel18 nothing much just going threw the process, how's your recovery?

    Nik Lewis@nikel182m

@24Banks I'm good, I'm completely cleared to do whatever. I'm just getting ready for the season.

Good to see Banks alert and on top of things.

  13. In his press conference today, Walters mentioned that there are two guys coming into the draft who have played center and who the Bombers have their eyes on. One is obviously Lavertu and I think the other is a kid from BC who's name escapes me. Anyway, no matter who Ottawa drafts first it looks like our #2 pick goes on a center.
