  1. question: at Bomber practices, when the offence lines up in full, does a team functionary walk around announcing that "the use of video recording devices is prohibited at this time"?

    No way.

And here's a question for you. At the end of Argo practices are the fans allowed to go down on the field and talk to the players and coaches?

  2. yup. could easily be a "crap or get off the toilet" type scenario.. give him some rope to see if he climbs up or hangs himself..

That was my initial reaction, too. Then yesterday they handed out a new depth chart and it has several noticable changes:

    1) Washington has been moved from nickleback to backing up Hefney at DB,

    2) McGee has been moved from backing up JJ at cornerback to backing up Sears at nickleback (hence he's been getting the 1st team reps at the past few practices),

    3) Markett has moved up the pecking order and is now backing up JJ at cornerback.

Reading between the lines here, I'm getting the feeling that there's pressure on JJ and Hef.

  3. So this must count as a third warning:

Asked Tuesday morning after the first of two practice sessions to comment on the progress of his team, Burke tore a strip off his crew of veteran defensive backs.

"I told the first group of secondary people last night I wasn’t happy with their performance and if they don’t pick it up, they’re going to be gone," said Burke. "I don’t know how many times I’ve got to say it. I guess it’s going to take somebody getting cut to get the message across.

"I’m not happy with the first secondary and how they are performing. Everybody else is performing really well."

When pressed if it was assignment or mental mistakes, Burke said: "Effort. How is that possible? They aren’t running hard enough. They’re not getting to the football. They’re not intense enough on the field. How is that possible? Ask them, because I don’t have the answer."

    Looks like Burke's not kidding.

  4. It's Penton, what do you expect?

Wally, Huf and Popp get props for re-signing their free agents and extending some of their players. But not a mention of the fact that Mack did the same thing with Edwards, Turner and Denmark.

Here's a much better article about the run up to training camp:

    http://www.cfl.ca/article/3-to-see-ques ... mbers-camp

The un-named author even gives us fans some props:

Unlike Dan Hawkins in Montreal, Burke isn’t faced with monstrous expectations, but an intelligent and passionate fanbase in Winnipeg is expecting some sort of improvement, if not more.

  5. Not saying there aren't guys I'd put there before Brown, but Brown is definitely worthy of it.

Not to single you out on the subject but I think a man who won 4 Grey Cups in 10 years as Bomber head coach should be on one of the gates instead of Brown

Brown was a great player but Grant was the greatest coach the Bombers ever had & yes, agreed... he should be recognized.

Grant was also a heck of a player. Although he mainly played as a receiver they sometimes put him in on defense. And in one playoff game he set a record that still stands:

    Most Interceptions Made, Playoff Game

5 Bud Grant Wpg Oct 28/53 vs Ssk

I think they should put up a statue of the guy.

  6. It's interesting that Isaac Anderson is at rookie camp given that he started a few games last year. He sure looked good in those games.

IIRC if they are on the 42 man roster for less than 6 games they are still considered a rookie and can be at rookie camp.

Yeah, there were several guys acquired in previous years who I guess still count as Rookies and were there yesterday:

    Anthony Woodson,

    Isaac Anderson,

    Doug Pierce,

    Miles Wallace,

    Brendan Dunn,

    Tyson Pencer,

    Anthony DeGrate,

    Rene Stephan,

    Jawann Westerman.

Also, there were two guys without numbers. We think they were Caucy Muamba and Mark Dewit, the free agents we picked up.

  7. For you guys that were banned from OB, are you allowed to view the site as a guest? I'm getting a message saying "this account has been suspended" on a white & orange screen. I'm not entirely sure why I'd be banned though...

If you paste "http://www.ourbombers.com/messageboard/index.php?c=3&sid=0d7fc45a9e75e2907a4719d01a336c50" into your browser you'll get the old index page with the message "Sorry, but this board is currently unavailable. Please try again later."

I don't think it's a question of banning. I think it's just that Colin broke the site.

  8. Here's Coach Burke's take on the new rules:

WINNIPEG Blue Bombers head coach Tim Burke said a new CFL directive aimed at making training camps safer for players this spring won't affect what his team is doing.

Burke said the directive announced Wednesday that restricts teams to one full-contact practice per day during this year's training camp is something the Bombers were already doing in recent years and a practice Burke intended to continue.

"I think the fans would appreciate us getting the best players to the field for the opening game," said Burke.

CFL teams in previous years could require players to wear full equipment and engage in full contact twice per day during training camp, but Burke said most coaches realized a while ago the practice produced diminishing returns.

"There's some guys who are old school," said Burke, "who just kept knocking heads until there was nobody left."

Anybody here ever heard of **** Huffman?

  9. I can't remember which Bomber it was who said "The season I play for free, it's those two-a-days at training camp they gotta pay me for."

    Well, it's changed:

The Canadian Football League, in conjunction with the Canadian Football League Players’ Association, took another important step to protect the health and safety of its players today by limiting the amount of contact allowed at training camps this year.

“Our players are our greatest asset, and we want to do all we can to protect them, while also protecting the essence and spirit of our game,” said Mark Cohon, Commissioner of the Canadian Football League.

Under the new regulations, contact will be restricted to a maximum of one practice a day during training camp, as will the use of shoulder pads and other protective equipment in addition to helmets.

Only helmets can be worn for the other practice on the same day, and contact is not allowed.

Previously, coaches had the option of staging two practices featuring full pads and contact during training camp.

  10. I can't remember where but I also read burke said the same thing about dbs

Thanks to that rather excellent Twitter feed they've got going on the LHS of the page, it just popped up:

Burke also wants to improve the secondary and will give some new defensive backs a try.

"I didn't think our secondary played very well last year, so we brought in a lot of DBs to compete at that position,'' he said. "Certainly the guys who were here last year are going to have to play better than they played last year or they won't be here.''

    http://www.cfl.ca/article/burke-champin ... -sidelines

  11. QB is definitely the battle Iso ... I also think that DB and DL will bring some surprises. The LB core will be interesting to watch as well.

Am I just getting old, forgetful and senile or did I dream of reading an article where Burke said that they've got 9 DB's in camp because he wasn't happy with the performance of the secondary last year? I can't find it but that should be an interesting battle.

Also, some of the most intriguing rookies they've brought in are on the D-Line (specially Zach Anderson and Dexter Davies). Really looking forward to seeing what these guys can do.
