Laine is best player in deal, but I think this makes us a stonger team. Plus I think Perfetti is better suited for the wing than center.

Dubois' Dad is a coach on the Moose. Chevy would have inside track
-
I heard that they waived Nedeljkovic and were worried they would lose him, so picked up Forsberg as contingency depth.

Has to stay on the main roster or be waived to get on the taxi squad. If he clears waivers, then he become waiver exempt for 30 days. https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2021/01/winnipeg-jets-claim-anton-forsberg.html

Jets would only get $1.075 Million of cap relief if he clears.
-
Many guys slated for the taxi squad will get waived across the league during camp when risk of claim is low. If they clear, they would not have to clear waivers again for the first 30 days of the season and could be used off the taxi squad.

Chris “Strafalski” getting some love south of the border.

The Lafreniere Draft Lottery
Tony Fresco replied to FrostyWinnipeg's topic in Winnipeg Jets Discussion
I would be hesitant on Lapierre at #10. (I'm not comfortable with his 3 concussions already). -
I should add, with the cap staying flat, Chevy needs to weaponize our cap space. This will be Chevy’s biggest offseason test as a GM. Not just drafting and developing anymore, he needs to mould this team into a contender utilizing the assets they have.

The Jets are not in a complete rebuild. The have one of the top 3 goalies in the league, elite Top 6 talent on the wings and a point per Game Center all under the age of 27 (except for the Captain). They have Buff’s ( and possibly Little’s) cap space and they now have a shot at the #1 pick. They also have some quality prospects on the back end coming in Samberg and Heinola plus Niku might make a nice adder in a trade. They legitimately need a 2C and a top 4 defender (with some size) and can use the cap space and perhaps the depth on W to address. If they happen to win the lottery, landing Lafreniere (you either trade the pick or move another LW to bolster the roster) enhances that. While they are not a legit cup contender today, there are still too many quality pieces for a complete rebuild. Moving one of the wingers might shakeup the chemistry too.

His AAV is $5.3 million I believe.

The Davis Sanchez penalties and ensuing kickoff are at the 3:35 mark of the video. Good memory @Eternal optimist

I haven't heard that about Wheeler before (i.e. character issues). Is that based on him not signing with his draft team, an extrapolation of "ruffled feathers" or some specific off-ice or dressing room issues from back then? I know he was an off-the-board pick when the Gretzky-led Coyotes drafted him right out of high school. I also think it is pretty well known that he is an intense guy, so I could see how that might rub some people the wrong way.

I've had a subscription for a couple of years now. The writing is top notch. As far as sustainability, there was some recent news on its capital/financial situation: https://www.axios.com/the-athletic-fundraising-round-series-d-e7026194-ccc7-4ec2-8415-6b8902c9a11a.html To date, they are still losing money, but apparently they expect that to turn to profit in the current year: I go mainly for the NHL coverage, but there is a bit of CFL coverage as well. All the other major sports are covered extensively.

But ... but... Maurice always favours vets over the young guys. 😉

Aim higher. More like Matthews/Marner money. If he scores 50 within the next 2 seasons and plays a solid 200 foot game as a power forward at 21 or 22 years old, he should be looking at Ovechkin type money in terms of % of cap when he signed his previous deal. That was 16.8%, which would translate to about $13.5 million. I expect he will be well north of $10m, likely North of $12m on his next deal if he lives up to his potential. He's off to a good start.
-
According to Cap Friendly, he would still be RFA at the conclusion of this deal. The$9 million salary in year 3 though means a minimum qualifying offer of just under$10 million. If TB doesn't offer that then he would become aUFA.
-
Allows for performance bonuses, which charge against the AAV (and cap if earned). $925K max on salary PLUS signing bonus. Performance bonuses can take it above. Check CapFriendly for details: https://www.capfriendly.com/players/ville-heinola

The Athletic has a real nice article on Thorburn and what he and his family went through this season. https://theathletic.com/939431/2019/06/03/for-the-blues-chris-thorburn-thankfulness-comes-in-the-form-of-family-stanley-cup-final-experience/ For those who don't have the paywall access, some highlights: Getting in only 1 game at the NHL level and then getting sent to San Antonio Leaving his family behind in StL so as not to disrupt his son, Bennett, who has autism Losing his NHL level benefits when in the minors, which was costly given his son's requirements Blues letting him fly home throughout the San Antonio season to spend time with his family. Blues calling him up to sit in the press box since April, as a Black Ace but also to restore his benefits to help with his son.. Couple of interesting quotes/stories I'll paste directly: Real nice to see Thorbs be handed the cup so early (I think he as like 4th or 5th to get it). Character guy who obviously still made a big impact on his teammates. Congrats Thorbs!

Yeah, take those rankings for what they are worth. THN called it a ranking of where your team is "right now". Jets out in round 1. Moose missed the playoffs. At best, they should have maybe stopped there, but they then went to the prospect stable and looked at how far those players' teams are in the playoffs in their respective leagues to come up with a ranking. So a skilled prospect on a weak team, you are dinged - like Vesalainen out early. Granted our prospect pool is not as deep as it used to be, but there is no way our organization is 30th in terms of skill and/or potential. The bottom three teams are Pittsburgh, Winnipeg and Columbus. Meanwhile in the top 10 are the Ducks and the Kings.
