  1. thanks for the lengthy explanation, Rich.

in regards to what you said about having not monetized the site, it is my hope that when the time comes, you will do so. i don't think that any of us want you to have to go into your own pocket for this (though we appreciate tremendously that you have).

i have nothing against a site i enjoy making money from my pageviews. in fact, on forums i support, i also click the ads on them to help out whether i want what's in the ad or not.

it's when a site owner bails out on his site's community and allows the site to suffer in his absence that i object. clearly, this won't be the case here with you and MBB.

    my $0.02

You know, I've kicked around the idea of adding adds to the site, but it wouldn't be to make money off of it.  This site was opened and here because everyone here is a huge Bomber and / or CFL fan.  The day the site becomes about money and not about being a fan of the Bombers / CFL, then thats the day the decisions that are made in running it are wrong.

If I can find a way to do it transparently, I would donate any profits to Never Alone (Bauer's old charity) and / or Heart & Stroke (because the sites name sake, Richard Harris died of a heart attack)

  2. This site works fine with my laptop on IE. I have Windows 7. My desktop has Windows XP. This is the only website on the entire internet I can't log onto using Windows XP. I can access it on Google Chrome but I'm used to using IE so having to change to another browser is annoying. Instead of telling us IE sucks or we (who have older versions of Windows) need to spend $$ to get Windows 7 to access this site, how about you fix this? How come I can access Ourbombers with Windows XP? Stampsfans, Calgarypuck.com, CFL Zone, 13thman, etc....Why is this site having so many problems being accessed by so many people?

Despite everything that has been said in this thread, I am going to respond to this anyway.

If you really want to know the reason to some of those questions you ask, I will give you some links to read:

    http://www.troyhunt.com/2013/01/the-impending-crisis-that-is-windows-xp.html

    http://theie8countdown.com/

In all honesty, I expect you to read to about the second paragraph of that first web page and stop reading.  Most people don't care about all that crap.

If you take my shots at IE personally because it happens to be the browser you are used to, then you have my sincerest apology for hurting your sensibilities.  In truth, my shots are not directed at you, but at Microsoft because for years they perpetuated a browser that did not conform to industry agreed upon standards and force everyone who made a website to create it and make it run in at least 2 ways, 1 for most browsers and 1 for Internet Explorer. And while their current version of IE works, they have millions and millions of people out there using old versions in which their technology has made it impossible for people running XP to upgrade to their current browser (even though those same people can run current versions of other browsers).  So my frustration is that their negligence causes me to invest hours of my time to make things work for people.

So you want me to "fix" this stuff?   Well I want Microsoft to fix their mess.

Why can you access those other sites, well most of them were created some years ago when things were different on the Web.  Technology moves on, browsers like Chrome update themselves automatically so they don't run into this problem, but the whole web community is still stuck with the old legacy IE browsers.  And while OB's new look works for you, as I've told you before, the only way I can "fix" this site to work properly for you on XP is to change the entire visual skin of the site. The new skin they chose happens to work on IE.   Why am I reluctant to change the skin to make the site work for IE/XP?  Well, I will tell you...

If you read through the first link I have above, they suggest that over the next couple of years, people on XP and IE8 are going to start running into problems like you are seeing here more and more.  Why?  because more and more people are finally getting off of those old platforms and it will no longer make sense financially for websites to continue to invest in all the extra time and effort to make them work on the older browsers.

That link above also makes mention that after April of next year, Microsoft will no longer support Windows XP.  So browser (and this site's) issues aside, anyone using XP after that point in time is putting their digital lives and information in jeopardy by continuing to use it. Spammers and hackers are chomping at the bit for this date, because it will be a free for all for them.  This is the last paragraph of that link:

2013 will see the culmination of all these issues; support for IE 8 will drop off rapidly, users of XP will find an increasingly broken web, the cost of building software in XP organisations will increase. Those same organisations will have some really, really tricky decisions to make about their OS future. But itwill happen this year and if it doesn’t, 2014 is going to be very, very interesting.

So if this article is right, then this site not working for you is just the beginning of the problems you are going to see.   And while you make this claim:

This is the only website on the entire internet I can't log onto using Windows XP

There are already sites out there that won't work for you, you just don't happen to use them.  Expect more to come.

Look, I get that you want a site to just work when you come to it and it is frustrating as hell when it doesn't.  But I don't make a cent off of this site, in fact it costs me a bunch of money to pay for web hosting and this software to run it.  I don't have a team of developers to fix everything like commercial sites that actually generate income have.  It is just me, and I have a full time job and life on top of this.

I'm not asking for money, or anyone's sympathy.  I got into this with my eyes open, knowing what I was getting into, and the day that I can no longer dedicate time to improving and fixing things on it, is the day I'll pass it on to someone who wants to take on the burden, but for now we are going to have to go at the pace that I can put into it.  And if that means that you need to suffer through a few jokes about how much I hate IE because of the misery it causes me, well I'm afraid you will just have to deal.

  3. Have I ever said how much I hate Internet Explorer?    :)

So, here is what I've done.  I was getting the same error as you on IE at work (this is IE8).  When I tried going to this link directly http://www.morningbigblue.com/community/forum/32-blue-bomber-discussion/ everything started working (I can even now go back to www.morningbigblue.com and it works fine after that).   Was also getting javascript errors with the Twitter widget.

I've disabled the twitter widget.  So I'm not getting the javascript errors anymore.

Can you go back to www.morningbigblue.com  in IE and let me know if it is working now (this will at least let me know if it was the Twitter widget or not).   And if not then you can probably use the link above once, then if it does the same thing as it did for me, then everything should work.

  4. Just wanted to give everyone a quick update on the Twitter feed which stopped working the other week.

After trying everything I could think of to get the mod working again, it turns out that Twitter discontinued an API that the mod was using.

I have a couple of leads on some potential work arounds if they aren't going to be able to fix the mod, so hope to get this running again in some form this week.

Edit:  Workaround seems to have worked, Twitter feed should now be back.

  5. Super excited to see Odds & Sods here at MorningBigBlue.   One of the best and my personal favorite post game analysis out there!

I encourage everyone to follow this link to Do or Die's Blog (or find it through the Blogs link on the top menu)  http://www.morningbigblue.com/community/blog/4-odds-and-sods/

There is a follow button on the top right of the page, and when you follow you will get a notification when you login every time there is a new entry.

Having the collection of all of the Odds & Sods in a single place for a post season retrospective will be great rather then losing them in buried threads.

    Bring on the gin!

  6.

Just five days left to purchase season tickets.

With just five days left for fans to purchase season tickets for the inaugural season at Investors Group Field, the Winnipeg Football Club today announced they have hit a new all-time season ticket high with nearly 25,000 sold.

    ...

Tickets can be purchased by clicking here or by calling the Blue Bomber ticket office at 204-784-7448.  Fans can also purchase season tickets in person at Investors Group Field

  7. Yeah the Code of Conduct is not the most prominent on this site.

I've been thinking the same thing that the explanation of the name should be moved somewhere else but haven't yet come up with any good ideas, other then creating a Pinned thread about it.   I'm open to suggestions on where we could put the explanation.

  8. First, you guys need to get on a modern browser!    :P

Second, I have enabled the default theme that comes with the software.   You will now see a link that says Change Theme in the footer of the website.  (At least I hope IE8 lets you see it).  The link is right beside the RSS feed icon.

If you click the link, you will see the option to change the theme to IP.Board.  The other options there are Disturbance (which is the name of the theme we are using) and the Mobile version theme.

Since I don't have access to IE8 anywhere to test, I have no idea if this theme will be any better or not, but I am sure you guys will let me know.  If it isn't, then I will have to recruit one of you to help me find an alternative theme that does work.

I don't know at this point if theme settings follow your profile from computer to computer.  So if you change for work, it may follow you home, but it is easy enough to switch back and forth.

  9. I do want to let the site settle a bit and let the bugs as well as features that people like or dislike come out.  We also want to find that balance to remain reactive to what people would like and refine the site as we go forward.

I am going to put up a poll with some of the new suggestions people have come up with.  Some of these seem to be split among people (for example there are people who like the color scheme and those who would like it changed to blue and gold), so I thought I would set this up to gauge what the overall reaction is of the member base.

Some changes are also easier to do then others, so I'll try to be reactive to what people want, but can't always make promises.  Also things like adding a new logo and changing the color scheme of the site need photoshop changes to do it, which I totally suck at,  So we will probably be recruiting some help if these are highly desired.

I tried to pull this list from the existing topics, if there is any other feature you'd like up for a "vote", post it here.

You should be able to choose more then one option and change your picks after you submit them (in case we add another option that you would also look).  Let me know if you can't.

  10. Posts are going to be deleted if this degenerates into a he said she said bashing / argument between the sites.

I really didn't think there was bashing of Colin going on in here.  Some posts that would have led in that direction have been removed.

We obviously had our reasons for splitting away and doing what we did, but we have decided not to air those reasons in public.  If you think what we did was trashy, you are entitled to that opinion, but realize you likely don't know the whole story or history involved.

The split happened, and our focus is now on this site and it's future. Dredging up the past won't benefit anyone.

  11. Here are my biased observations from the afternoon session:

QBs: I am not a Buck Pierce fan so take of this what you will but he did not look very good today. He was overthrowing quite a bit and didn't look quite right. He's usually better than this in TC though so I wouldn't read too far into it anyway. I really like Max Hall. He looks far more polished than any QB I can remember bringing in at their first TC. He's accurate, looks poised under pressure and has a good enough arm to get by. He had a pick in the last throw I saw him make but other than that, he looked real good. I really, really want Goltz to succeed because he seems like he has all the tools but he looks very middle of the road to me so far. He hit Simpson with a beautiful long bomb in a drill but then he throws behind a guy on the very next play. He's still rather raw it seems so I'll give him more time but it does feel like he's already lagging behind Hall, even if he is still getting backup reps. I'm not sure any better way of saying this but Clement looks downright awful. His arm is pretty weak, he doesn't hit receivers in stride and he made some atrocious reads in scrimmage today. I will concede that he looks comfortable at the line of scrimmage and seems to be a leadership type but I am really not impressed.

    .....

    Blogged this...

    http://www.morningbigblue.com/community/index.php?/blog/2/entry-1-from-main-camp-day-three-observations/

  12. Instead of advanced member, why not levels based on the names of past greats (Milt, Joe Pop, Leo Lewis etc)?

It is a good idea, I wouldn't mind changing the levels the board is defaulted with, both with names and posting numbers.

However, if we go with the names of past greats, it will be one hell of a thread debate to put them in a hierarchical order.

  13. If it can be eliminated that would be great. To me, it's a useless feature. I'll see the posts once I go into the thread itself. It is a major annoyance & an extra step to read or discuss a subject. If you guys can delete that feature, please do.

This was something asked for by quite a few people.  It takes a good 1.5 - 2 seconds hovering over the link for the preview to show.  Is it on your mobile phone or using a computer that you are getting bothered by this?

  14. How do I stop the twitter feed from popping up when I want to click on a discussion topic? Now THAT is annoying as it pops up over top of the thread heading just as I want to click on it... Grrrrr.

That isn't the Twitter feed, it is a preview of the post.  If you hover on a link it will show you the preview.   I know this was bothering me a bit on my phone, but the mobile version of the site is surprisingly good.

If you aren't quick enough on your click, and you get the preview pop up, you can click on the title of the pop up at the top to open the thread.

  15. This is of course what happens when you do upgrades in the middle of the night. My original post should have read special thanks to Brandon not Brian.

And thank you all for the kind comments about the site. Very excited about how this upgrade turned out

  16. We weren't quite sure what to expect when we decided to open MorningBigBlue.com. We are very pleased to say that the response has been beyond our expectations. A big thank you to everyone who has come and contributed to make this place the success that it is.

After being open for only a week, I am proud to say that we have grown to 100 registered users and 950 posts in 55 threads.

With such an overwhelming response, we decided to invest in better software for the site. We found a package (special thank to Brandon for the suggestion) that not only provides the majority of the features asked for, but will allows us, with your help, to grow into a Winnipeg Blue Bomber Community rather then just a message board.

We hope that you will agree after giving the new site a spin that this software brings us from "amateur" to a professional, full blown site.

Some of the features we can now offer:

    - A more aesthetically pleasing theme that allows for easier post differentiation, makes new posts easier to find, better search capabilities and and an overall cleaner, more professional design

    - Easier site navigation

    - More then 10 posts listed per page

    - A fully integrated chat room

    - Quick Reply box

    - Preview of posts when hovering over topics

    - The ability to collapse and hide the Twitter feed

    - Ability to "Like" posts

    - Ability to hide signature lines

    - Administrators and moderators are now easier to find

    - Ability to login with your Facebook or Twitter account (or continue using you board credentials if you prefer)

    - A member blog section where any member of our community can create their own articles. Tired of the Winnipeg media's slant on the Bombers? Write your own article to refute them.

    - A mobile version of the site (which you can easily switch on or off from your mobile devices)

    - You still have the ability to ignore people!

    And so much more.

The conversion seems to have mostly worked. A large number of your avatars did not convert properly. My apologies for the inconvenience. Please let me know if you encounter any issues with the new site.

As always, your feedback is important to us as we strive to make this the premiere Winnipeg Blue Bomber and CFL fan site around. We expect a few bumps as the new software gets broken in. Let us know of any issues you find, or suggestions for continued improvement.

I've also decided to go by my real name on this site from now on.

    Rich (aka JimmyFresco)
