2019-20 Grey Cup Champs Off-season discussion.
SpeedFlex27 replied to Wanna-B-Fanboy's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Fernandez was outstanding. He was a truly great receiver BUT... he didn't have CFL longevity. He left for Oakland after 5 seasons & returned to the Lions 8 years later for one last swan song but he only had 225 yards receiving. Here are Swervin' Mervyn's CFL receiving stats for anyone who wants to know... He played 6 seasons for the Lions (82 thru 86 & 94). He had 399 catches for 6,690 yards & 57 touchdowns. Every year except 1994 he had over a thousand yards receiving including 1,727 yards in 1985. He was probably the most dominant receiver of that era in the 80's so I can see why someone who isn't a Blue Bomber fan would say that. However, longevity has to figure into the GOAT. The ability to perform at an extremely high level for a long time. The two best that I ever saw were Milt Stegall & Allen Pitts. Pitts was cut after 11 seasons in Calgary by Wally even after a thousand yard season to save money. Wally was a total ass that way. To cut (at the time) the CFL's all time leading receiver was just brutal. Of course all know that Milt played every down of his CFL career with the Bombers. -
No large gatherings in Calgary until at least June 30th. I'd think a training camp with 60 players is a large gathering. There'll be no TC on July 1st.

Who's gonna pay for sequestering in hotels all season, meals, expenses, salaries etc with no fans even if the play in Canada?
-
He hasn't been fully trained on the TSN Way yet... 1. Players have to have stupid nicknames. 2. Dumb catchphrases after every touchdown or big play. 3. mention a subject in the first quarter then talk about it the rest of the game ad nauseum. 4. Interview someone... anyone... then shove them on TV with smiling personalities. 5. When interviewing totally ignore the three TDs scored or the momentous comeback. 6. Ask... no wait... TELL... the person being interviewed that they must do pbp even if they don't want to. 7. Be as absolutely annoying as one can be on tv. He has a long way to go before graduation.

You may not like Kenney & that is your right but he's not a stupid politician. Ottawa will always be in his crosshairs, especially Trudeau so it works well to criticize the federal government back here. He also knows the consequences are dire if the Alberta economy is opened too soon. Nothing wrong for planning for an opening & how it should be done. Provincial governments should be discussing how the economic rollout will occur in Canada. I have no problem with that at all. BTW, did you see the story that Legault in Quebec reopened the mining sector yesterday (April 15th) much to the objections of First Nations in Quebec worried that an influx of miners on their lands will sicken their population already vulnerable to the Covid virus. No one in the Canadian MSM is criticizing the Premier for that. If it was Kenney he'd be demonized & front page news.
-
So far, Kenney has been following the advice of Dr Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's Chief Medical Officer. His comments are just echoing most Albertans mistrust with the Liberals in Ottawa & Trudeau in particular. I don't sense he's ready to throw things wide open. If he does & it backfires then he'll be responsible & he'd either have to resign or lose the next election so it's a huge gamble politically. I don't think he's ready to take that gamble yet. Just be thankful that things up here in Canada are not nearly so sideways as they are in the US because of Trump, Hannity, Ingram & Fox News with their movement to reopen the economy like we saw in Lansing, MI today. We'll see what happens with the morons demonstrating in Wyoming, Oregon & Washington & if they get sick. Just a vocal nutbar minority refusing to listen amped up by Conservative commentators. The majority of Americans are staying indoors & listening to their state governments & healthy authorities. As well as with Fox News pumping the tires of these idiot demonstrators. Nothing I'd like to see more than Fox along with all their talking heads being sued into perpetuity & out of existence. Then there's Dr Oz on ABC. I won't get into what he said today but if you don't know then find out. On twitter just type #DrOz

I think yes but international travel is still happening. Funny how no information about that is being released. As Calgary is one of the 4 designated airports to receive international flights, I'd like to know how many passengers are flying here everyday.
-
I have Flight Radar 24 & you're right. There are flights coming into Canada & the US from China & Europe. Borders should have been closed months ago to all international air & sea travel.

The only saving grace TSN has with Rod Black & Glen Suitor is they don't team them up. Can you imagine if they were a regular broadcast team just how horrible that would be?

Vince McMahon considers move to bring back the XFL

I don't know why the football league wannabees can't get it through their heads that fans like an off season. After the regular season, playoffs & Super Bowl with all the hype of that game & then to start over a week later with a third rate league, who gives a ****? -
Riker looks a bit frazzled.

My niece texted me this morning. Her family lives in Amsterdam right in the middle of that nasty European outbreak. She has a fever, a wicked headache & she's very tired. She's been like that now for 3 days & she's in bed with her husband taking care of their 2 young boys. She's worried as is her husband. So, they are stuck quarantined in their small apartment for the next week & a half at least. I asked if she going to get tested to find out if she has Covid 19? She texted back saying the government won't allow testing because she doesn't have a cough. So, how accurate are the stats coming out of Europe & the EU? The crazy thing is from what I've read not everyone manifests tye symptoms the same way so not testing is just a way to fudge the stats. They've lived in Europe for almost 15 years. The cost of living is so expensive there. Her husband works for 20th Century Fox in corporate sales. Her husnband is based out of Europe & also travels to Saudi Arabia & other wealthy middle east countries in that region. I wish they'd move back to Canada.

Just an idea whether it's dumb or not. Gotta consider everything. I guess my comeback would be where are we going to play in December other than Montreal, Toronto & Vancouver indoors. The Rogers Centre probably wouldn't allow it on their precious field. Is the Big O able to hold games with the roof the state it's in? All games at BC Place in December? If fans won't be there then who cares where they play? The warmer weather would allow for a longer season. Do I think it'll happen? Probably not & also we don't know when the border reopens but it's just an idea.

Regular season starts Labour Day. Play a 12 week schedule. All regular season games played in Canada. Then switch the playoff games to Arizona & California with the Grey Cup played in the SW or California before Christmas Day. If empty stadiums are to be used, this makes perfect sense as college stadiums will be empty except for the Bowl games. That would allow us to extend the season so late. Just a thought.
-
He should have owned up to that bad day. Chose not to. Learning experience for him. Have to take the bad with the good. That's part of being a pro player.
-
Been warned not to mix it up with you so... all I'll say is hope none of your aged loved ones get sick.

Vince McMahon considers move to bring back the XFL

That is so true. -
What a dumb thing to say but then... you've been making a habit of it everyday on this thread.

If people in Kenora need to see a doctor or shop you don't think they come to Winnipeg? It's kind of 2 faced for them to turn around & say stay away. Same with Pinawa.

The facts are deaths decreased & people lived longer. They weren't dying in the streets by the thousands. Sure, malnutrition was a problem but isn't malnutrition a problem in Third World countries today? Even in 2020 malnutrition was still a problem. Like on First Nations reserves or with the homeless in this country. The more we don't self isolate & let the "young & strong" work the longer it'll take for the virus to be under control. So, the longer this damned situation goes on. Don't say it's a straw man conversation. Guys like Floyd & Trump would sacrifice the old & sick to make a buck. So, I don't agree this is some noble effort to get the economy going.
-
I think your doom & gloom, we're all gonna die if we don't go back to work, we must sacrifice the old & the sick for the young & the strong, the economy being destroyed is worse than the virus itself thingy needs to be tempered. I was curious as to how the Great Depression affected the mortality rate & found articles all saying the death rate went down & not up. Life expectancy increased as well. Here's one: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/great-depression-had-little-effect-on-death-rates-46713514/ Another: https://www.history.com/news/great-depression-economy-life-expectancy Finally: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2765209/ There's more of the same articles but I won't post them. It seems historians & scholars are in agreement that while life was difficult for just about everyone in the 1930's, millions did not die from starvation, disease, from freezing to death or from the economy falling into a depression. Indeed, life expectancy increased in the 1930's. So then, based on the information in the 3 articles above & others that can be googled, it seems the world would survive somehow & life would carry on. Therefore, I would only sacrifice my life to save my family if in danger. Not to save the local A & W down the street or Apple, Microsoft, General Motors, Sony or Amazon. In this economy at present, companies will fold & others will take their place. I expect that a lot of companies that we know now will not be around in the future when this pandemic is over. Ones that we have known all our lives. Opportunities will be created by entrepreneurs when these & other businesses fail. The world survived the Great Depression & The Second World War back to back. Europe, China, Japan & SE Asia were in ruins after 1945. The economy roared back in the early 1950's. My concern isn't Floyd's business. That's his problem although I do hope his business makes it even though he wants human sacrifices at The Altar Of The Almighty Dollar. I have my own problems to worry about & those of my family, relatives & friends making it safely thru this pandemic. But if any of you want to sacrifice the lives of seniors who are sick then please think again. People who sacrificed to make a better life for you by building this country. If saving the economy means killing the weak, the sick & the infirmed then count me out. If you want to be be dead heroes & sacrifice your life willingly or the lives of your loved ones to save the economy then have at it. I won't be doing it.

I don't know was it? And if so, would they have given their lives to save Pepsi or Coca Cola? Or were they doing that to prevent their families from suffering nuclear poisoning? I think men of all ages would have done that.

More like Man jumps in river to save young boy. Gets sept away by current. That's a one off reactionary situation.
