It’s about time Atlanta got a hockey team. I don’t know why no one tried it before.

Atlanta-area city council approves NHL arena plan

The NHL's potential return to the Atlanta area might be one step closer after a key vote this week.

Alpharetta City Council voted 4-3 to approve zoning changes for a mall that now could include an NHL-sized arena, per FOX 5.

The NHL has not awarded an expansion team to Atlanta and there is no guarantee the arena will be built, but this vote opens the door to more discussions.

The Alpharetta plan calls for a 20,000-seat arena, a smaller music hall, offices and a hotel.

Alpharetta is one of two Atlanta-area destinations exploring the possibility of attracting an NHL team.

Forsyth County has also expressed interest in building an arena for an NHL team and held a successful vote in 2024 to open the door for a new arena.

Alpharetta and Forsyth County are both located just north of Atlanta.

The NHL has said it is eyeing Houston or Austin, Texas, for its next expansion team. Atlanta is the only other top-10 U.S. television market without a team.

The Atlanta Thrashers played in the NHL from 1999 to 2011 before moving to Winnipeg.

The Atlanta Flames played from 1972 to 1980 before going north to Calgary.

The long game plan to the next Canadian franchise always starts with getting Atlanta a team first... Last a decade and move north.

So what happens to Logan Stanley? Time to try the KHL? The Swiss League? The SEMHL?

Lots of the local media. Wiebe, Minuk, just about everyone who’s hosted Jets @ Noon in the last month. All saw him as comeback candidate.

Another suitor pulls out of the Patrik Laine sweepstakes

Same goes for Laine. Both of these guys (Stanley/Laine) could be playing in Europe in the Slovak Extraliga with Jake Virtanen this year.

Crazy how far Laine has fallen.

Yup. The way I've heard it explained, the way he plays with lack of defense along with the lasting injury concerns, he'd have to be top 6 and not 3rd or 4th line guy. No team is gonna trust him to be top 6.

You'd have to think there's a team that would take a gamble on him at the minimum, since the upside is great if he can get back to some consistency. It would probably be good for him if rosters could be structured to have PP specialists on the roster- the guy still has a wicked shot- but that ain't gonna happen.

Laine is cooked. Stanley prob gets a PTO at the least. I might give him one with the Jets cuz prob not the worst 7th or 8th d

Time to move to Europe boys. NHL party is over. Evander can take a picture of himself with a stack of Euros on his back while doing pushups on the Eiffel Tower.

I think most these dudes got offers or whatever but maybe not for the cash they expected. Some are washed tho. But there’s worse players than a few on the list in the league still
