There was an article about him (and others) in the Free Press prior to the draft.  I'm a bit surprised he dropped as far as he did given his size/stats.

quick internet search reveals Pender is no stranger to on-ice fisticuffs, and he also made waves at the 2013 world ball hockey championships in St. John's, when he initiated a brawl against a superior Czech Republic team during a semi-final game that resulted in a lengthy suspension by Canada Ball Hockey.
 

that stands out as a reason to ban the guy. Yeah dude taunted him but throwing his broken stick at the fan is wild.
