Kyle Rittenhouse Pleads Not Guilty to Kenosha Protest Shootings Kenosha County Court via Reuters Kyle Rittenhouse, the 18-year-old accused of fatally shooting two people and injuring a third during an August protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to several charges, including first-degree reckless homicide with a dangerous weapon and possession of a dangerous weapon. He is accused of traveling from Illinois, ostensibly to protect businesses during a protest, and then shooting at protesters when they tried to disarm him. He crossed state lines back home and turned himself in the next morning—but has maintained he acted in self defense. He has been hailed as a hero on the far right and was released from custody in November on a $2 million cash bond. He will return to court on March 10 and will face a jury later that month. (Gonna be real interesting to see what his defence will be. "I felt threatened so I drove two hours with automatic weapons to face unarmed protesters"?)

2020 USA ELECTION!!!!
Lawyer Who Was on GA Conference Call With Trump Resigns From Her Firm C-SPAN/Reuters A volunteer lawyer for President Donald Trump’s campaign has resigned her position as a partner at the law firm Foley & Lardner after her involvement in the explosive conference call between Georgia’s secretary of state and Trump was made public. “I have decided that it is in both of our interests that I leave the firm,” she wrote in a statement to Insider. Mitchell aided the president in pressuring the Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to overturn the state’s election results in the Jan. 2 phone call, and she previously described her role as a “volunteer” for the Trump campaign in its longshot and fact-free efforts to overturn the election. In a statement released Monday, her firm said, “Foley & Lardner LLP is not representing any parties seeking to contest the results of the presidential election...We are aware of, and are concerned by, Ms. Mitchell’s participation in the January 2 conference call.” (I would think that the next step for her will be a disbarment hearing in front of her local Bar Association.) Hawley’s Furious Tweets About Antifa Attacking His Home Were BS, Cops Say ‘A MINOR EVENT’ Greg Nash/Reuters Fresh from fabricating claims of election fraud, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) has been called out for fabricating details of a protest outside his home in Virginia on Monday night. “Antifa scumbags came to our place in DC and threatened my wife and newborn daughter, who can’t travel,” he wrote. “Now ‘vigil’ means screaming threats through bullhorns, vandalizing property, pounding on the doors of homes and terrorizing innocent people and children.” However, the local police department said no property damage was reported and the group of about 15 protesters left without incident when police arrived. They were cited for writing chalk messages on the street, chanting in violation of local noise limits, and protesting outside a private home, which is illegal in Virginia. “It was a minor event,” a police spokesman said. (Now who's the snowflake?)

Could be a civil war': Trump supporters refuse to accept Biden will be president Some of President Donald Trump's supporters are refusing to accept that Joe Biden won the November 2020 election and will be inaugurated president on January 20, after listening to months of lies from Trump, the Trump campaign, and right wing media. One maskless Republican interviewed by CNN (video below) said he would never accept Joe Biden as his president, but when pressed, went further – much further. "You accept he's going to be inaugurated?" CNN's Donie O'Sullivan asked. "No I don't," cried the man, wearing a "Trump 2020 The Sequel" sweatshirt that also read: "Make Liberals Cry Again." "I mean, how could that change at this point?" O'Sullivan, somewhat exasperated, asked. "There could be a civil war, you never know," claimed the devout Trump supporter, standing next to a woman with a "Stop the Steal" sign. "You don't actually want a civil war, do you?" the reporter pressed. "I don't," he claimed. "Show us the voting machines, show us the ballots. Show us that this was a fair election, or we'll never accept a vote again, ever," he threatened, pointing his finger in defiance. It's unclear what that Trump supporter thinks he would do or find if he were actually presented with the voting machines and the ballots. Despite what he's heard on Fox News, OAN, or Newsmax, or read in right wing media or Facebook, the election was fair and all of the pro-Trump false claims have been thoroughly and repeatedly debunked. Earlier in the segment one woman insisted "Trump is the next president," and another declared, "I'm going to the inauguration for Trump. I booked it before the election," while claiming she has faith "he's going to be elected." 'Could be a civil war': Trump supporters refuse to accept Biden will be president - Alternet.org

1 In 2 Canadians Broke COVID-19 Rules Over The Holidays, Poll Suggests. OTTAWA — A new survey suggests nearly half of Canadians visited with family or friends over the winter holiday period. The poll by Léger and the Association for Canadian Studies found 48 per cent of those surveyed visited with people outside their households, compared to 52 per cent who said they did not. Public health officials had pleaded with Canadians to sharply limit their contacts during the holidays to avoid massive spikes in COVID-19 cases. But it appears something gave for Canadians, said Léger vice-president Christian Bourque. “Usually, we Canadians are sort of much more, I would say, disciplined when it comes to going by what governments are recommending in terms of our behaviour, but over the holidays, apparently, it was sort of tougher on Canadians,” he said. Of those who did visit with friends or family outside their homes, 34 per cent did once, 12 per cent did two or three times, and two per cent did it often. -Canadian Press

Covid-19
CRAP! Experts fear a new South African strain of COVID might be resistant to the vaccines1 Some medical experts have been expressing confidence that the COVID-19 vaccines from Moderna, Pfizer and others will be effective against a new, highly contagious COVID-19 variant that has been slamming the United Kingdom. But U.K. Health Secretary Matt Hancock has a dire warning about a COVID-19 variant that has been spreading in coastal areas of South Africa. That variant, according to Hancock, might be resistant to the vaccines. Hancock told BBC Radio, "I'm incredibly worried about the South African variant. This is a very, very significant problem…. It's even more of a problem than the U.K. new variant." John Bell, an immunologist at Oxford University in the U.K., is worried as well. Bell helped develop AstraZeneca and Oxford's COVID-19 vaccine, and according to Bell, there is a "big question" mark over whether or not that vaccine and others will protect against the South African variant. CBS News' Sarah Carter reports that Bell said it was "unlikely" that the South African variant would render the vaccines from AstraZeneca/Oxford and others ineffective, but he did say that there might need to be adjustments so that the vaccines will be as effective as possible against that variant. Oxford Professor Shabir Madhi, who worked on the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine, told CBS News that more than 13 different COVID-19 variants have been identified in South Africa since the pandemic began — and the new one, 501.V2, is by far the most disturbing mutation he has seen.

Apparently Raffensperger ducked 18 calls from Trump before accepting (and recording) the call. I would imagine that Trump's fury knows no bounds and I would not want to be within a couple hundred meters of him these days. However, if this is the stupidest thing you think he will do, you are wrong. I imagine that Marlon Perkins is hovering nearby.

Did Trump violate state and federal laws by trying to bully Georgia officials into changing election results? The Washington Post has obtained a copy of a recording in which President Donald Trump, on January 2, can be heard trying to bully and coerce Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger into overturning his defeat in the Peach State. Raffensperger, however, wouldn't budge: the conservative Republican, during the phone conversation, maintained that President-elect Joe Biden won Georgia fair and square. Conservative opinion writer Jennifer Rubin examines the legal ramifications of Trump's actions in her Post column and outlines some ways in which Trump might have committed "extortion" and other "criminal" acts on January 2. Rubin explains, "In the call, Trump asked Raffensperger to change the certified vote that was subject to multiple recounts: 'So look. All I want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. Because we won the state.' In fact, he threatened him." The Never Trump columnist adds that Trump was "sounding like a mobster as he often does" during the conversation and went on to tell Raffensperger, "You have a big election coming up, and because of what you've done to the president — you know, the people of Georgia know that this was a scam.'" Rubin stresses that "pressuring a campaign official to change the vote tally is a federal offense," and she notes what former Justice Department Inspector General Michael R. Bromwich had to say on the subject on Twitter. Rubin also notes that "threatening Raffensperger with criminal consequences is also arguably extortion" and quotes Title 18, Section 875 of the U.S. Code, which says, "Whoever, with intent to extort from any person, firm, association, or corporation, any money or other thing of value, transmits in interstate or foreign commerce any communication containing any threat to injure the property or reputation of the addressee or of another or the reputation of a deceased person or any threat to accuse the addressee or any other person of a crime, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both." Rubin adds that "alternatively," Raffensperger "might investigate and bring applicable charges under state law" — which "would have one clear advantage: Trump cannot receive a federal pardon for state crimes." "There must be a response to a president who exploits his office for the purpose of overthrowing an election," Rubin stresses. "The evidence is on tape. The next attorney general should move forward, if for no other reason, to deter further attempts at such reprehensible conduct. I would suggest impeachment as well, which could include a ban on holding office in the future, but we know already Republicans will defend anything Trump does."
