Empires rise and fall. What we are witnessing is the decline of the American empire, mainly due to internal social rot. The political and social/cultural divides are too vast to be overcome, IMO. When close to half the country doesn't believe democracy is working and put their own individual rights ahead of the common public good, the result is inevitable. I'm just not sure if the end will come slowly over the next several decades or arrive quickly in a violent civil war.

I share your frustration. I know of a person who has had necessary heart surgery delayed due lack of ICU beds caused, in part, by COVID patients, many of whom are anti-vaxxers.
