Star Wars: Spoiler Thread Discussion
The Unknown Poster replied to Logan007's topic in General Discussion
Maybe because Rey is someone important and we weren't uet privy to a scene explaining it to us. Somelne should remind Lucas how dreadful the prequels were. It's one thing to have second thoughts when you see your ex gf with a new guy but he looks like a chump when he's critical of the new film. -

In a way I don't want Helle to stand on his head every night and make Chevy think this team is better than it is. Jets management relies on hope and good wishes and fairy dust too much. -

Star Wars: Spoiler Thread Discussion

George is going a bit nutty in his old age LOS ANGELES -- George Lucas has apologized for criticizing Disney's handling of "Star Wars" and saying he had sold his characters to "white slavers" in a recent interview with Charlie Rose. In a statement issued Thursday, Lucas says he misspoke and used a "very inappropriate analogy." It was not clear what the "Star Wars" creator meant by the "white slavers" comment, and Rose did not ask a follow-up question on his PBS show that aired Dec. 24. The charged words nonetheless sparked ire when the interview was posted online Wednesday. "I rarely go out with statements to clarify my feelings but I feel it is important to make it clear that I am thrilled that Disney has the franchise and is moving it in such exciting directions," said Lucas in his statement. -

Does Chipman Interfer?
The Unknown Poster replied to The Unknown Poster's topic in Winnipeg Jets Discussion
Chevy has referred to "ownership level deals" in the past so clearly there is a protocol for certain things. Chipman has also stated they have detailed multi year projections and budgets on every player so I think chevy has a pretty clear picture of the space he has to work with on everyone. -
Arctic ice hockey: Maybe it's because we're about to enter 2016. Maybe it's because I'm mellowing in my old age. Maybe it's because I have two young daughters that are making me happier every day. Or maybe it's because I said I'd write a positive Chevy article if I raised $100 for my November campaign. But today, I'm writing a positive article about Chevy! Okay, fine, it's because I said I'd write this article if I raised the money for Movember and I did (thanks to my sponsors Jarret, Helen, Mike, Dean, Alan and Scott!), but maybe through this exercise it'll help soften my stance on our GM going forward. So here goes nothing: Hi Chevy. I've been hard on you over the years, as I haven't been the biggest fan of both the moves you've made and the moves you haven't made. I started the #whatdidchevydotoday hashtag to voice some of this displeasure on social media, as I was trying to fill in the blanks about what you do everyday since you don't do or say much. But as the 5th season of the Winnipeg Jets2.0 saunters on, and as the calendar flips over to 2016, I've begun to see that perhaps you are doing a good job, Chevy. And by that, you're doing exactly what you were hired to do. When Bill Watters went on to the Rona Roundtable with Rick Ralph (whoa, that's a lot of R's) a few weeks back and dropped the big, and severely under reported, bombshell about how Mark Chipman "interferes" with the day-to-day operations of the Jets, it got me and some other people talking. Just how much does Chipman interfere in terms of hockey operations? Now, I'm not a huge fan of Watters and think a lot of what he says is nonsense, and this could be too, but as a former NHL executive it's foolish to think that he doesn't have some league connections. At the very least, there's a little bit of smoke, so lets run with this theory. So Chevy, how much does Chipper interfere in your day-to-day business? I have no doubt that you have some autonomy over your team and some roster decisions, but it has been well documented that the big boss has sat in on some meetings with you and has plenty of say when it comes to big money contract decisions. I may be way off here, but I'm wondering if you were hired with the explicit goal to attempt to be competitive during the honeymoon period while also trying to build for the future. And though I think that's a terrible idea, as trying to have your cake and eat it too in this league results in a bubble team remaining a bubble team while worse teams reload with top picks, I'm perhaps now willing to give you a pass if your hands are tied in this plan. I used to think that the buck stopped with the GM, as its your position that officially signs off on all player personnel moves, but if Chipman also has his hands on the wheel then you deserve less flack than I've given. That's why I've begun using the hashtag #howdidchipmaninterferetoday a few times lately. I hope you've enjoyed that. Another area that I'm willing to give you plenty of credit in is the draft, as it appears that you and your staff have a knack for locating amateur talent. Though there's been some missteps over the years, your past few drafts have been widely praised across the hockey world. My concern is that I'm not sure you've drafted well enough from your 7-13th overall draft positions to improve quickly enough relative to other teams that have drafted higher, which I believe Winnipeg has to do as an undesirable UFA location. But, this plays into the aforementioned plan of having to remain "competitive" for the 8th spot every year, which obviously hurts your ability to end up with a high pick. Would Chipman have green-lit the pure tanking strategy that Tim Murray was allowed to do in Buffalo last year? I'm not so sure. And I suppose I can't fault you for that. As it is, I now believe that there is a non-zero percent chance that you have done an excellent job following a flawed mandate given to you by a potentially meddling owner. Had it been up to me, the Thrashers would've been blown up early on in the honeymoon of the Jets 2.0 when fan interest was guaranteed regardless of what product was put on the ice, but perhaps that option wasn't given to you. And if that is the case, you've done a great job carrying out this flawed plan and attempting to out-draft the other 29 franchises. Unfortunately, it hasn't yielded success in terms of playoff wins or true competitiveness for the Cup, but thats not a surprise as the plan wasn't very good. But maybe now we know the answer #howdidchipmaninterferetoday. So there's my positive piece on Chevy. Or at least as positive as I could be. But this goodwill will disappear quickly if the Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfugliensituations don't come to a satisfactory conclusion. But until we know how those turn out, Chevy can enjoy at least a little bit of a reprieve from me. So Happy New Year everyone. We'll see how long this new resolution lasts for me.

You can't really separate the players in the trade like that. Kane and Myers were the two big pieces. Id like to know why the thought process was because it sure looks like Buffalo put a ton of stock in Kane. Myers was a featured guy whenever deadline possibilities were talked about Hard to say yet but it looked like we won the. It looks like we won now. And unless kane gets a lot better or lemiex and roslovic suck, it's always going to look like we won fortunately we found a team in Buffalo that wanted to get worse at the time to try and get the #1 draft pick.

The only thing that makes it entertaining is Vince as a performer. And his willingness to be insulted. He has now been called old, shrivelled, senile, geriatric etc. Hilarious. Watch his face when Steph calls him geriatric. Imagine of Steph or Hunter were willing to be insulted like that. So the NYPD was inundated with phone calls from people thinking vince was really arrested. Ratings stayed strong for vince. But how long can they keep using him.... -

Analysis of the trade http://www.arcticicehockey.com/2011/2/18/2001011/who-won-the-gretzky-trade The trade certainly didn’t look very good that day. The Oilers were giving up three players in their prime who had already combined for over 750 goals, 2000 points and 9 Stanley Cup rings. Gretzky already had 1086 assists which, at the time, was already an NHL record, ahead of Gordie Howe’s 1049 and Marcel Dionne’s 1024. Arguably it was only an injury that broke Gretzky’s incredible streak of 8 consecutive Hart Trophies and 7 consecutive Art Ross trophies. And what were the Oilers getting? Fifteen million in cash, three first round draft choices, and a couple of kids. Even for the known commodity Slats insisted on Luc Robitaille, but was forced to settle for Jimmy Carson. Walking away with only one NHL player was as incredibly high-risk deal for the Oilers. The prospect and three picks could have resulted in absolutely nothing, an extension of their dynasty, or anything in between. We all know how things worked out for the Kings. Gretzky would win the Hart trophy his first season in Los Angeles, but never again, and add only three more Art Ross awards to his massive trophy case. Fortunately both the prospect and one of the picks worked out well for the Oilers, and together they contributed more than Gretzky from that point forward. Martin Gelinas and Martin Rucinsky would outscore Gretzky 550 to 311, and 1272 to 1188 in points, earning 22.2 more goals above replacement value than the Great One. The only known commodity the Oilers received was the young Jimmy Carson, and though the benefit of hindsight reveals that he was worth less than Marty McSorley at the time of the trade, the Oilers shrewdly and quickly leveraged his talent to get Petr Klima and Joe Murphy from the Detroit Red Wings, who helped bring one more Stanley Cup to Edmonton in 1990. Even to the dispassionate eye, the Los Angeles Kings still won the trade, but it was by fewer than 5 goals. This trade was hardly the disaster that people anticipated at the time, or that more emotional fans still believe today. In fact, it’s remarkable how such a crapshoot could have turned out so evenly for both teams.

There may be a hull breach into “Star Trek: Axanar.” The crowdfunded Star Trek indie film raised over a million dollar had generated plenty of publicity in the past year. The project even recruited notable names to the project including Richard Hatch, Tony Todd and Kate Vernon. If Paramount Pictures and CBS have anything to do with it—they’ll make sure it won’t even be on the launching pad. Last week, the studios filed a lawsuit in California federal court that “Star Trek: Axanar” is a violation of their intellectual property. "The Axanar Works infringe Plaintiffs’ works by using innumerable copyrighted elements of Star Trek, including its settings, characters, species, and themes," written in the complaint. Producer Alec Peters pitched the film to investors that it is not a fan film, but will be a high-quality Star Trek film with a fully-professional crew. Earlier this year, Peters gave interviews in which he is confident that it will survive any legal actions since it “wasn’t a commercial endeavor.” However, in the lawsuit, it seeks an injunction with damages for copyrighted elements with Vulcans, Klingons, Federation starships, phasers or anything that has the look and feel of Star Trek. “Star Trek: Axanar” takes place two decades before Captain Kirk’s voyage in “Star Trek.” It tells the tale of Garth of Izar, who is the legendary Starfleet captain and Captain Kirk’s hero. Garth navigates his crew through the Four Years War with the Klingon Empire that later solidified the Federation. With juggernauts of Paramount and CBS uniting, Axanar will definitely feel like it’s fighting a losing battle against Klingons for a new Four Years War. Read more at: https://tr.im/SIVzI

You hope the NDP win another majority? yikes. I agree with Goalie. I just sort of wish the government wrote off the debt as the cost of doing business and moved on. Bombers would be a very, very wealthy franchise if that were the case. -
These are always fun: No. 1: Crash Data Recorder Tells All A Winnipeg man stated that he had been the victim of two consecutive hit-and-runs — on the same night. The man told Manitoba Public Insurance investigators that he was struck from behind by a dark SUV while driving in rural Manitoba. The driver of the SUV did not stop, so the man quickly went into pursuit mode. A short time later, the vehicle owner claimed his vehicle was hit from the side by a truck — with the driver of the truck getting out and fleeing to the original dark SUV. This stranger-than-fiction story quickly resulted in an SIU investigation, at which time the Crash Data Recorder indicated that the vehicle was parked at the time of the impacts. The man would be charged, and later pleaded guilty to public mischief, receiving a fine of $3,500. His claim was also denied, resulting in a saving of $15,000 to Manitoba Public Insurance ratepayers. No. 2: What the Hay! Strangely, there was hay and dry grass stuffed into the vehicle’s engine area. SIU investigators also discovered hay stuffed into the headlight areas of the vehicle. What the hay? Turns out the vehicle owner was trying to destroy his vehicle by setting it on fire. The vehicle owner claimed he was attending a party out of the city and noticed a large fire in a hay field. As he told the story, he quickly jumped in his vehicle and, accompanied by a few pals, drove out to investigate. The vehicle owner claims he emptied a fire extinguisher in failed attempts to snuff the fire. As he told his adjuster, the fire then engulfed his vehicle. But the story didn’t add up. In addition to the suspicious placing of hay, the SIU arson investigator would discover an accelerant had been liberally splashed throughout the passenger compartment. Faced with all the facts, the vehicle owner chose to withdraw his claim. The savings to Manitoba Public Insurance customers was nearly $14,000. No. 3: Cruising For Trouble The woman told her Manitoba Public Insurance adjuster that her vehicle had been stolen. What she didn’t know was that Manitoba Public Insurance and the Winnipeg Police Service routinely share information. Truth was, the vehicle was not stolen ─ the woman willingly gave the vehicle to a male friend, who police had attempted to stop during a traffic stop. Attending officers had clearly observed the woman sitting in the passenger’s seat. The woman was later arrested and pleaded guilty to public mischief. She was given 12 months probation and a conditional discharge. No. 4: An Unlicensed Friend The Winnipeg man told his Manitoba Public Insurance adjuster that his vehicle had been stolen after it was found badly damaged. But in an interview with Winnipeg police, the vehicle owner said he had given his vehicle to a friend, who admitted he had been involved in two collisions. The man also admitted he had no driver’s licence ─ which was known by the vehicle owner. Winnipeg police would then share that information with Manitoba Public Insurance investigators. Due to knowingly giving his vehicle to an unlicenced driver, the vehicle owner’s theft claim was denied ─ a saving of $34,000 to Manitoba Public Insurance and its customers. No. 5: Not so Injured A woman sustained injuries to her shoulder and back after being involved in a collision. She then began collecting benefits, including income replacement payments. As the months went on, she told her case manager that she was too injured to work. However, the truth would soon become clear. An SIU investigation discovered the woman had in fact returned to work — specifically, she was now involved in a physically demanding agriculture position. The woman would later plead guilty to Fraud Over $5,000 and was sentenced to three years of supervised probation, including counselling, 200 hours of community service work and restitution of $36,000.

As spectators its human nature for us to speculate on available information. I was surprised that Patrick wasnt indicted (until the blow up fiasco with the victim's mom and the tampered evidence). Will definitely be more cautious in my predictions on this one. Like I said, a girl usually doesnt end up in the ER with memory loss and injuries from an evening of consensual sex....

Game 37 : Jets v2 @ Jets v1
The Unknown Poster replied to FrostyWinnipeg's topic in Winnipeg Jets Discussion
I would say yes. Especially in the case of a situation like the Jets where it wasnt an owner relocating his franchise. It was new owners. New everything other than the players. When the Jets 1.0 relocated, the trademarks reverted to the NHL. The history should have also. Then in the event a new team springs up, expansion or relocation, they have the option of keeping the history. At some point TN is going to use those original Jets trademarks to make money. And eventually they are going to honor "Winnipeg Pro Hockey" legends. I say they should have it all back officially. -

There is precedent for the team history staying with the city (I cant remember where though, Cleveland? Baltimore?). But ofcourse, in the NHL at least, it always follows the team. I always thought it made a lot of sense for the Yotes to WANT to give back the history. The timing seemed perfect with the Yotes having new owners and the Jets returning to do a history-transfer ceremony of sorts. I assume Bettman would be fine with this as he seemed to be pushing True North towards using the Jets name and they ended up with the logos and trademarks of V1.0. Just seems to fit the idea that TN wants to honor the past "eventually". Get the history back, for whatever its worth, so we can honor OUR players. When you hear someone say a current Jets player has X amount of franchise goals do you immediately wonder which Thrasher he passed or do you think back to Jets 1.0? I dont give a lick about the Thrashers. One question has been answered by the Wild though - alumni game includes both current and former North Stars players. Which again, clouds the history issue. -
That's funny. When I saw the MBB twitter wasnt updated, I checked Mike's twitter too. I thought maybe the site, Mike & Rich had all been sucked into an abyss. Or like goalie, I wondered if it was me somehow. I usually lock in at work so I first thought the site had been filtered but nope...

Game 36 : Dead Things @ Jets
The Unknown Poster replied to FrostyWinnipeg's topic in Winnipeg Jets Discussion
You never know with Maurice though. He seems more likely to play the hot goalie. But he's shown a loyalty to veterans too. If he subscribes to the idea you shouldnt lose your job due to injury then Pavs will get back in when he returns. And in that case, Helle seems likely to be sent down. Can they carry three goalies with one scratched? The idea would be for Helle to play lots rather then be a back up here. But I somewhat suspect Hutch might be moved for a late pick or used in part of a deal involving Ladd or Buff. Clearly one of Hutch/Pavs is not coming back next year and knowing the Jets propensity to not do much, its smarter money to assume they keep Pavs/Helle and trade or release Hutch. Especially if they have soured on Hutch. They will keep Pavs. Even at his salary, since they arent paying Helle much, they'd keep both just to have two capable goalies. Pavs has done better when pushed by competition. If they still like Hutch, then its more interesting because they know Comrie isnt ready so you need a back up for Helle next season. If they like Hutch more than Pavs they know they can re-sign him to be a cheaper option and really save a ton of money on goaltending for a year or two. But then they have to trade Pavs... I dont think its impossible to trade him. 29 teams out there...one of them might take him. Or, they keep him for expansion bait. -

That is sickening. -
I wonder how the Buffalo players feel about him.... It was a failure of Jets management to manage the situation that you had Kane demanding a trade for four years before his team mates finally had enough and essentially kicked him off the team. Lousy management to let it get that far. But we won in the end.

While there are instances of women setting a guy up or making a false accusation for an attempt at monetary gain, those sort of high profile scenario's are pretty rare. I cant call the cops and say Bill Cosby raped me last weekend. The cops would laugh me out of the police station. There has to be opportunity and motive. In the case of both Kane's, they put themselves in positions to provide opportunity to an accuser. Even then, evidence is evidence. It seems when an accusation is made against a celebrity or athlete, more often than not it's true. Not always ofcourse. Look at Michael Jackson. He was rail roaded. But then look at OJ Simpson who actually got away with murder.
