There have been broad hints that both Brandon Stewart and Jovon Johnson had attitude problems last year which didn't help the team culture at all. Having gotten rid of those two problems, Walters and O'Shea were probably very loathe to bring another prima donna on board.

I'm sorry but JJ did everything this organization asked him to do and never complained publicly, ever.

I think there were huge 'attitude' problems last year... once the coach visibly quit on the team and the GM vanished.

The description came from Wiecek, so take that for what its worth. Considering how little Poblah and Banks have contributed to their respective clubs, this looks like a lose-lose transaction.

    Huh?  Poblah's playing for BC.

made a nice catch in the game today...

  2. If Etienne was cut I would definitely be picking him up as a backup NI receiver.

SSK has some pretty damn good NI receivers... I don't think it shows so terribly on him that he was cut (especially considering they essentially got him for free)

  3. Calgary has the following players on their suspended list:

    49 Marshall, Brian FB Non-Import 6.00 210 1991-02-24 Western 61 Circelli, Joe OL Non-Import 6.03 296 1991-03-22 Western 71 Crapigna, Tyler K Non-Import 5.07 166 1992-08-04 McMaster 97 Wiggan, Derek DL Non-Import 6.01 250 1992-07-27 Queen's

Is it safe to assume these guys are going back to school? Can you "hide" guys on the suspended list like teams do with the IR?

Basically these guys could force Calgary to activate them and remove them from the suspended list by "reporting" - So they are choosing to be allowed to be hidden like this.

However it does mean that other clubs can't talk to them

If he catches on in Ottawa & scores 130 points & our placekicking isn't as good then it was a huge mistake.

So if a guy we cut goes elsewhere, & plays much better than the guy we kept instead, it should be considered a bad thing for us? Thanks for clearing that up.
How can it not be? Especially if the guy we keep isn't as good. You're welcome. Anytime.
Yes he was being sarcastic, because your comment basically adds up to:

"If the guy we cut ends up better than the guy we kept, then it was a mistake."

Well no ****. That's how cuts work.

Well actually... in this particular case if Maher plays better than Lirim it doesn't necessarily mean we made a mistake because of the ratio.

Basically because we are playing NAT at kicker we don't need to play a NAT somewhere else.  So we'd have to look at how much Maher plays better at the kicking position vs. how much of a dropoff we'd have at whatever position we would have to go NAT at if we kept Maher.

  5. Nik Lewis is massive...  I'll be amazed if he lasts the year that belly is huge.

Lulay is done... half the time they panned the camera to him he was rubbing his shoulder.   Glenn will be the guy for this year and maybe next....

Benavides is one angry fat guy...so angry I'm guessing he has a heart attack this year.

Chris Shultz is still a moron in regards to suggesting that Andrew Harris might get cut.

Probably can still run circles around some guys... the man is a ******* athlete

  6. Just watched that int. play over again and again…and the same thing happened…..

But really, now I see the blitz came from the other side and Peterson, the tackle should have had the outside man, no question.

It was the protection, not the play called. And that's basically Hall has said. He said it was the right call.

(Happened with about 5:25 left in the game)

And the receiver (Woods) went to the outside where it looked like the play should have gone.

    That's actually the other thing

Normally when I saw Hall throwing INT's while getting hit it was on missed blocks making the pressure come sooner than their protection package would have Hall expecting it to come - especially from the blind side.

Not saying he wasn't at fault, but the decisions he makes while throwing the ball when he isn't getting hit are pretty damn good.

  7.

I've found that the only time Hall throws INT's are when he tries to throw as he is being hit.

He threw a few like that last year and again in Calgary...  Looks to me like the "noodle arm" that gets INT's thrown only comes out when he tries to throw when he should be eating a sack (or when he should've had more time to throw)

That's a common theme for a QB, this being hit, and being under pressure and stuff.  If what you're trying to do is defend Hall because his INT's are when he's under pressure, I don't buy it.  QB's are always under some degree of pressure... it's the decision making under pressure that needs evaluating.  Hall's quick release and decision making made him stand out amongst last year's QB's.

This year, that's not enough.  It's clear our crop of QB's has improved, and he's going to need to show more to win a job.

As much as many on this board are clamoring for Hall as a backup QB because he showed capable last year... I think he's in tough.  Because of poor pre-season performance (and possibly because of ties to the old regime), Hall's on the bubble.  Brohm is a McManus guy, and Marve is a new regime find, and both have outplayed him to date.

Not just under pressure... he doesn't throw INT's when simply "under pressure"

He throws INT's when he is actively being tackled in the process of throwing the ball - He needs to do a better job of realizing he doesn't actually have enough time to finish his throwing motion before contact occurs, but his decision making otherwise is superb (he basically doesn't throw INT's where physical contact hasn't affected his throwing motion)

  8.

The next 3 practices will be used to evaluate who wins the backup QB job. Will focus on decision making.

IE. O'Shea was not happy with Halls int at the end. I finally got around to watching the game and yikes that was a poor decision to make. Eat the sack there and they might win the game.

I'm glad that you are finally seeing how mediocre Hall truly is. So please no more comparisons to Ricky Ray and dropping passes into the receivers hands. Halls noodle arm and stone legs simply won't cut it.

that's an interesting take on what I said.... quite frankly I think Hall looked OK until that int. I didn't see a whole lot from Brohm that would put him ahead at this point other than the fact that the int was just a brain fart and Brohm didn't make any of those this game so to me Hall is still the #2 guy but I think O'Shea is not happy with losing that game and rightly so, they gave the game away with dropped passes and sloppy tackling and other assorted mistakes.

  9. Messam doesn't play Special Teams at anywhere near the level Volny plays special teams

That is the main issue... Volny isn't a superb running back but at least we can have a backup running back who is an excellent special teams player.

With Messam you have a change of pace running back who can't play special teams for ****.

  10. Same amount of practice as Jarvis Jones had, and he instantly looked like a monster...

I think its great that Knapp is the flavour of the month now... reminds me of when Andre Douglas was the next big thing.

If he didn't hurt himself and NEVER RECOVER he might have been... it hurt us pretty bad with him down for forever and thinking he was one week from coming back for practically the entire season

  11. With the 6 game injured list, does that mean you can pull off three guys per season rather than one in the first 9 games and one in the second?  Or do I totally not understand how the injured list works?

After 6 games the person comes off the 6 game injured list and his salary now counts against the cap unless he gets put back onto the 6 game list.

Probably still the same number of people that you can pull pre-emptively off the list per season, just now if you get injured for 5 weeks you don't get screwed by being on the 9 game injured list and miss out on 4 weeks of football where you are healthy but not worth using the preemptive removal for.

  12.

Despite the entire CFL internet community talking like it was Mitchell's job, Huff has never indicated anything other than Tate is their starter.

Everyone just assumes Tate will suffer a season ending injury by halftime so Mitchell is the default starter.

Not everyone :-). Based on a lot of comments I've read here over the last year or so on Drew Tate cuts against the grain of how Huff and his coaching staff must see Tate. Listen, I'm not a fan of his, he plays for the Stumps, but seriously he has talent and can't yet be placed in the 'no more chances' category. And for people who disagree with this, I would direct you over to Mr. Hufnagel to get his perspective.

Tate has looked ridiculously good when he plays and isn't injured.

I actually don't expect BLM to outplay him for the job simply because I don't think BLM is as good - Now good at playing the role and good at staying healthy are two entirely different beasts.

IMO Tate has one more shot to show he can play a season without injury - he gets hurt for an extended duration this year and the best he can hope for will be a backup role next year.

  13. Officially ratified.

Will update with details as they roll in

No more 9-game injured list. 6-game injured list now.

44 man active roster, 2 man reserve (instead of 42/4)

Practice roster expanded from 7 to 10 (12 to 15 in fall)

NO MORE NON IMPORTS AND IMPORTS

They are now known as "nationals and internationals"

    LOL

  14.

And then sometimes a pick is bad just because they can't figure it out. (Poblah)

Poblah was about as surefire of a choice as there was coming out of college. Hell, he was being recruited as an import before his eligibility was established. Remember how dominant he was in training camp the first year he was here? I remember Jovon Johnson saying he's as tough a matchup one on one as he had ever faced in practice.

And then as it turned out, he sucked when the lights came on.

IIRC Poblah also got hurt in the first game of the season and we didn't get him back again until the LDC, where he did ok but then he was never utilized properly. 2012 was supposed to be his big breakout year but he got hurt again. Last year he was just invisible, other than some notable drops - I still remember that Hamilton game where he was wide open by 20 yards, Hall put it right in his breadbasket and he Kamau'd it. I do wish him well though, and hope he can carve out a career in BC.

I also remember that he had a tendency to create interceptions with his drops - cause the ball to pop up into the air after he failed at catching it.

It happened like 2-3 times on passes sent his way which is fairly frequently considering how often he was thrown the ball.

  15.

    OK, I did it anyways...

    2013: (1) Mulumba, (2) Robertson, (3) Fitzgerald, (4) DiCroce, (6) Stephen Alli, (7) Billy Pavlopolous

    2012: (1) Pencer, (3) Aprile*, (3) Biukidi, (4) Rene Stephen, (4) Jake Thomas

    2011: (1) Henoc, (1) Jade, (3) Brendan Dunn, (4) Swiston, (5) Volny, (6) Liam Mahoney

    2010: (2) Watson, (4) Chris Smith, (4) Woodson, (6) Greaves

    Bold = still with team

Italics = good player, or high potential

*traded for Bucknor, so still valuable

Please let me know if I missed anyone/pertinent details... I know Kito Poblah should fit in there somewhere but I forget where cuz he was a supplemental pick

Good list. Of all bolded guys I'd only have Greaves as solid and he's no all-star. Jake Thomas will probably start this year but only due to lack of depth and having to start 7 canadians. Jake is a gamer but his like of size will be his undoing as monsters will dominate him. Watson is the only bolded guy who has all-star potential but since coming down with TPD (Tyson Pencer's Disease) he can't stay healthy. Volny is a decent reserve RB but hasn't impressed me as a breakout baller. Don't even think he's an above average blocker which is where your bread 'n butter is if you can't lug the piggy for 500+....

I dunno... Greaves consistency and lack of any injury time off...  He is a relatively good pass blocker and a pretty good run blocker

Pretty sure I'd call him an all-star... he has only been getting better year after year as well.
