  1. What grey area? He resigns his position with the CFL & then goes to work for the Bombers. No conflict of interest. It would though, be interesting to see his first verbal clash with a head referee on a bad call. Amusing, actually. Football coaches go from job to job seemlessly. They work for a team one  year then coach against them the next. I can't see Higgins leaving the CFL to coach a specific team as being a problem.

Unless all the refs hate him and make calls against us because he is our coach/GM.

  2. then again... someone has to get to work on extentions (JE, Muamba) and audit the roster before the offseason... do you really want it to be the guy you're going to tie the can to? if you're going to gun someone, you do it at or around labour day so whoever is put in charge (be he a "caretaker" or permanent) can make certain your key assets are in place for next season.

You're not finding a replacement GM mid-season so I don't see what difference it makes.  If Mack gets fired, it will be Walters or Buchko taking care of that stuff for the balance of the season and neither one will be our GM next season.  Pointless.

  3. Source on Gilmore? Sounded like he might play yesterday.

Bombers head coach Tim Burke said Turner is "probable" to go on Friday and he said Turner's return couldn't come at a better time as the Bombers prepare to face a very strong Calgary Stampeders running game led by tailback Jon Cornish.

"He's very important, especially in this gameplan against Calgary because they're a very good run team," said Burke.

Meanwhile, Matthews -- who missed last week's game with a bad back -- returned to practice today but didn't last long, pulling up lame about halfway through the session and withdrawing.

Burke said Matthews is now unlikely to play on Friday. He said defensive lineman JT Gilmore is also likely out again for this Friday.

But Burke said non-import receiver Kito Poblah looks good to go and will likely see his first action of the 2013 regular season on Friday.

Returner Aaron Woods, who the Bombers acquired a couple weeks ago, is also expected to make his first CFL appearance on Friday on special teams.

  4. Buck may still be "the starter", but based on the way Burke was talking on the coach's show last night, I'm 99% sure Goltz will be starting Friday, and if he performs well he may keep the job.  This is just a hunch I have, and if Goltz doesn't perform Burke will put Buck back in when he's healthy while maintaining he never lost the starting job.  Burke kept using the phrase "at this point in time" when the Buck as a starter talk came up, which is the same thing he said about Brink when he was asked about Brink's future after Elliott got released.

He also said people shouldn't get too worked up about it and maybe wait to see how things play out.  Almost like he was hinting at the fact he's leaning towards going to Goltz but doesn't want to throw Buck under the bus in the media.

  5. The old catch 22. How does a coach get experience as a coordinator if only experienced coaches with proven winning CFL records are hired.

I don't think coordinator experience has to be pre-requisite, but there should at least be some knowledge of the Canadian game and previous experience as a CFL positional coach. Cortez, for example, was a QB coach in the CFL before ever becoming an OC.

All the successful OCs right now are the same way. Chapdelaine, Milanovich/Brady, hell even Dickenson with all his knowledge of the game spent time as a positional coach before advancing to OC. It's just the only way that you're going to have success in the CFL and unfortunately the Bombers chose to ignore that.
