  1. even when there were 2 passes that blatantly are dropped by receivers that would get you first downs and allow you another series to get yardage in addition to the yards those passes would have added on to the totals? This isn't just on the qb. when you have 12 yards passing safe to say it's a collective pants shitting. 2 dropped passes does not a half make! When you lock onto your favorite QB at the moment, you really lock on! Actually 2 dropped passes can make huge differences in time. You drop a pass on 2nd and whatever, and your drive stops, you have to punt. The pass is caught and that drive could have lasted another 5 minutes of playing time (if they can keep the drive alive). The same can be said for a missed throw. This is correct. Factors like dropped passes, blown coverage by the defense, and YAC can make a huge difference to a QBs stats, but have little to do with their performance. I can remember at least 2 instances from the TO/montreal game that padded Collaros' stats. One was a short pass, where the TO receiver got huge YAC with a great open field run. The other was a blown coverage by Montreal that left a TO receiver wide open for a long touchdown pass, a pass that collaros actually threw poorly, and he had to make a great catch over his wrong shoulder. So the actual game matters not just the stats. Having said that, these variables tend to even out somewhat over time, most QBs stats reflect a few dropped passes during the course of a game, and the concern about Goltz's first half yardage occurs in the context of low passing yards in his previous games also. The Kohlert drop would not have led to a first down and would have added about 7 yards to Goltz's total, the Edwards drop about another 7, plus whatever they pick up on their next series.
  2. however Durant did also get sacked 8 times... Perhaps you're guilty of remembering the times Durant was able to get away and for Goltz you're more focussed on the times he was caught. Agree with WildPath. Goltz is fast in a straight line, but does not seem as elusive under pressure as some other QBs. This applies not only to durant, lulay, burris, but also reilly, mitchell and definitely collaros, so I don't think its just an experience issue. Not sure if its a pocket presence issue, or just that as a larger quarterback, he's not as shifty. May still improve with time.
  3. I think Walters is doing a good job, but I would not go overboard. He accepted (like over 90% of the posters here) that a talent upgrade was needed. Together with the scouting network in the US, he brought up a receiver that may be a good find, but has yet to demonstrate that. He no doubt talked with MB about former Hamilton players that could help, and came up with Peach, Kelly, and Boltus. He decided along with the rest of the organization that Buck was done, and either shopped him around, or fielded a call from BC and made the best deal he could. With all due respect, these are things I would have thought of, and I'm not even considered by other parents as capable of being the manager of my son's basketball team. For Walters to earn the job, he needs to demonstrate to the people on the inside who work with him on a daily basis (ie WM) that he is better than any alternative that comes up in the search. As mentioned, 2 things that would go a long way towards that would be to find someway to upgrade the NI talent on the oline, and to swing a deal at the end of the season for a QB before the Ottawa draft (the decision will for GM will likely be made before free agent QBs are available in Feb 2014). I worry that we are again putting the peter principle into action by taking someone who is good at a certain level of management, and raising them prematurely to a higher level that they may not be ready for or capable of, based on the fact that they are here, are familiar, and would take the job.
  4. As bad as edmonton was at times, most of the point differential came down to Parades making a 50 yarder, and eskimos missing 2 easy field goals. When you add in the dropped edmonton pass that looked like a sure touchdown, this was a winnable game for edmonton. Calgary with BLM looked beatable, and did not seem to have the offensive efficiency they have with KG. Their only touchdown came on a short drive after the eskimo fumble on the punt return.
  5. Woods is a keeper if he can get healthy again.
  6. Yeah but how long do we have to wait for his body to rebuild? Drew Tate is the high end Italian sportscar of the CFL. Amazing performance when its working, but you don't want to be relying upon it on a daily basis, since its going to spend more time in the shop than on the road. If you buy it, you also need a second car (QB) around ready to go. I would pass.
  7. Unfortunately, I am of the mind that this decision is already decided. Walters will continue to sign like crazy, Blue will win one or two more games, and everyone will say "Boy that Walters kid works hard!" And with that we'll have our new GM. I sympathize with your concern, since the last few hires for GM/CEO have not inspired confidence. But if Wade Miller is kept on as CEO, he will know that his success as a CEO will rest on his choice for GM, and their ability to turn the direction of the football team around. However much we want the bombers to win, he wants it at least as much, and probably more so. I can't see him giving the job to someone, simply because they are around already, and hard working. He will seek out the best person he can find for the job, based on a comprehensive search. He will do whatever he can to free up the necessary money to hire the best candidate. I don't think that will be Kyle Walters; but if it is, then I am going to accept that Wade Miller knows far more than I do about who will make the best candidate, and I will be fine with the choice. Sure, you could argue that a Walters hire will be all about saving money; but at some point you have to cut the organization some slack and give them the benefit of the doubt.
  8. I just watched the second half for the first time. Jovon has really lost a step. Taj smith made him look like he was standing still several times. JJ just could not keep up.
  9. That's ridiculous! What's wrong about not wanting to make a guy GM who has half a season as an AGM and half a season as an interm GM? There's nothing wrong with it. Walters may in the end be successful as a GM, but what evidence is there now that he is the best person for the large challenge of remaking the bombers? He was a mediocre special teams coach. He was hired by Mack and the same executive group that are responsible for the current state of the bombers. He was hired primarily for his expertise in a fairly narrow aspect of management, his expertise with CIS/Canadian talent. He learned the job for 1/2 a season at the feet of what most consider a lousy GM. Sure let him do the job this season, and let him compete for the position, but I can't believe there are not more qualified candidates.
  10. No way in hell Glenn is going to get traded by Calgary... not a chance. Me thinks Tate would be more likely purely because they don't want his injury issues. I think we should acquire Tate from Calgary, Nichols from Edmonton, and keep Buck. We can run a 3 QB rotation depending on who's healthy. It will keep other teams off balance. Based on today, Hall looks like he may have potential as a development QB in this scheme.
  11. Glad you enjoyed it, I worked hard on it and its late. We agree he made up his mind. That his decision was preordained and had nothing to do with how Hervey and Mack approached the situation, not so much. Ultimately though, I'll grant you its speculation (on both sides of the argument.)
  12. Edmonton did not have a1st rounder to trade. BC got an offer from Edmonton for an asset they were going to lose. BC simply tried to get more for Reilly through Wpg. (swap picks plus another pick) BC had nothing to lose. Nobody can adequately explain why Reilly wouldn't wait 2 weeks to optimize his deal. Gee, I dunno. Lets see, Eskimos wants me to be their starting QB, and releases their starter to prove it. This also demonstrates they are willing to pay me starters money. Hervey approaches BC (not the reverse) and is willing to give up a second round pick in 2014, and swap second round picks in 2013 for the right to sign me prior to free agency. Mack on the other hand did not bother approaching BC about acquiring me. Mack won't up edmonton's offer for the right to talk to me, (essentially conceeding to edmonton the right to try and sign me) and is hanging on to all three of their QBs, including their starter. Gee they must really want me badly, I'm sure they'll spare to expense to sign me. Oh ya, and Winnipeg has a GM with a reputation for being cheap and not bending over backwards to sign free agents. You're right, no reason to take a good offer on the table from Edmonton when clearly something solid and so much better was definitely on the horizon from Joe Mack. What happens if once free agency arrives, Joe Mack makes a mediocre offer, and tells me that I'll have an opportunity to earn the starting job over the next year or 2, and if I succeed, then I'll get paid starters money? Ya, you could argue that Riley could always could go back and try to pick up Edmonton's offer, but there's no guarantee the exact offer is still there. If I was Riley, I'd do exactly what he did. A bird in the hand....
  13. What we really need is the athleticism and arm of Goltz, and the accuracy, intelligence and savy of Hall. Maybe we could get the "mad genius" Crowton back, and he could transmutate Hall and Goltz in his laboratory. Maxtin Haltz anyone?
  14. We could offer Wally a second round pick for permission to talk to him about whether he would consider coming back to Winnipeg.
