Agreed with you that it may not have been realistic to retain Castillo after 21. Still, everyone makes decisions and prioritizes what they prioritize. The bombers put the priority elsewhere and gambled that Leggio would be ready. This despite that he has always looked like he has the yips big time every time he lines up to kick. Ultimately, we gambled and we lost. Yes, agreed again- absolutely should’ve been a very vigourous competition in training camp in 22 like there was this year. Bottom line for me, is that I think there were plenty of signs to suggest we shouldn’t put all our eggs in the leggio basket. At the time it appeared reasonable not to focus on retaining Castillo for the reasons you suggest – but then the bombers needed to look elsewhere rather than turn back to legs given his performance in 21. that said, what’s done is done. I will move on from my griping though I do need to briefly reply to one other post! 🙂

Even though O’Shea had to bring Leggs back to training camp to save face with all he said about him in 2022; which, let’s face it, was a waste of everyone’s time.

Not to start anything here… 🙂 But as I recall, there were quite a few Liegghio defenders on this site last year… even after his debacle performance in the playoffs, including playing the single biggest role in us losing the Grey cup. The only ones I was more irritated with at that time was the bomber brass. Why they went out and got Medlock after the Lirum 2015 season and then went out and got Castillo after realizing Leggio was pooping the bed in 2021 yet decide to stick with him in 2022…?? this after openly saying that both Medlock and Castillo we’re worth it because you cannot afford to be without a reliable kicker and hope to win a championship. They knew this! They acted on it twice before! So, I am sorry my friends, MOS is the bomb in a lot of ways. But this weird loyalty thing really gets in the way sometimes. O’Shea still has to wear our failure to three peat in a significant way.

Don’t necessarily disagree with the decision. I am simply acknowledging that he showed potential and that, as such, we may come to regret this. I don’t think those are incompatible sentiments… ie. It may both make sense at this time and ultimately also prove to have been a bit shortsighted. I am also disagreeing that he had his chance in real game conditions and “blew it”. He didn’t see the field enough IMO to Definitively “blow it”. Again, can’t disagree with MOS cuz I don’t know the backstory and can see where they like Prukop.

Bit harsh, no? Didn’t he get a grand total of 2 plays? Given what he showed in the preseason I gotta assume there’s other stuff going into this decision. Regardless, I share the sense of loss given the potential I witnessed at both games I saw him play.

If memory serves, the Canadian mafia have never been a big “recruit the NFL cuts” regime. They tend much more to be, “we like the roster we have” Regarding Liegghio, how can we be surprised? The only thing surprising is how many heavily defended him last year even through the debacle of the playoffs and especially the putridity – is that a word? – of his grey cup performance. I mean we know that O’Shea has a defend/deny/deflect strategy with the media but that doesn’t mean the rest of us have to buy it. When they recruited Medlock and brought in Castillo in ‘21 the blue brass seem to recognize the critical nature of controlling those variables that are within your control – i.e. ensuring you have a reliable kicker. There is no championship team without one. That was what was so weird about their “strategy” last year. I have no problem with coach’s strategy of bs’ing with the media as long as behind the scenes he recognizes there’s a problem and deals with it. But that’s not what happened last year. but now Legs is gone and I, for one, breathe a sigh of relief.
