2023/2024 CFL (Non Bombers) Off Season News
wbbfan replied to Noeller's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
It feels like football at large is throwing random crap at the wall to deal with concussion issues. Rather than having a well thought out multi pronged approach with defined success criteria. If it was a revenue concern you know they would have a much better plan and process implemented. Direct impacts cause concussions for sure. But, change of direction hits and whip effects cause a lot too. Guardian helmets, the new gen helmets, next gen and beyond next gen helmets are all mitigation on a fraction of the causes. Not prevention. It doesn’t matter if you have the 1 piece shoulder pads and helmet or a perfect absorbing piece of future gear. Moving at high speed then being forcefully stopped quickly is terrible on the brain and body. No piece of gear is going to stop your brain sloshing in your skull. What is needed, to start, is a change to the culture of bringing guys down. Technique changes reinforced by rule changes from the grass level on up. Better gear is always good to have, better self protection when it comes to absorbing hits and going to the ground is as big. -
It’s either a real good thing that our rookie camp cuts are being picked up or real bad that this is the best the rbs can do. Our camp talent level is extremely good, maybe it’s lazy or maybe they really liked him in scouting previously.
-
He couldn’t make the argos pr the last two years. They’ve been stacked at lber rotating guys who are hands down better. good is the enemy of great. League isn’t lacking for mlbers either.
-
Nailed it. And his career is top 5 ish all time. Maybe the best lber skill set ever up here
-
They arent. Biggie eating a block doesn't generate pressure, little on being critical to it. We've used nose tackles, twists, cheetah fronts and db blitzes to far greater result.
-
It isn't hard to do if your Lbers aren't preforming. Lbers have the smallest impact on defensive performance in the CFL. It's a passing league with a huge field. The best defensive weapon is rushing the passer. The next best is coverage. Lbers plug up lanes, scrape to the ball and close gaps. Defensive points allowed is also dependent on a lot of factors. The biggest two are offensive TOP and offensive points scored. The more points you score, the earlier the game goes into cruise control. When the O scores a major on the first 4 possessions constantly the defense gets a much easier job to do. IF you think the attitude towards biggie is new, you must've missed the grey cup. The biggest reasons he struggled last year were health (now hes still hurt or hurt again) and role/lack of a nose (hes looking at the same role and probably not a nose tackle again.)
-
He wasn't that bad, but he wouldn't have made the argos PR either. Allstar awards and year end awards are mostly politics, reputation, and team success. Does any one want to rank the top 5 lbers in the league and make a case for biggie being better than any guys in particular? I don't think half the league would start biggie over their guys. I also don't think biggie was even close to half as good as the elite level of MLBer play in the cfl the last two years, when at his healthiest. Hes still solid, and we do some stuff in our system to make the most of his range, and when he's not in cover he frankly doesn't have to do much. He eats a block other wise. He isn't 1/10th the player he was in his prime, which is to be expected of a lber who will turn 36 this year. I mean how many games has he played? 200?

I actually think by ldc our D will be the best it’s been since the end of 21. We need the fresh blood and we’ve got some studs in camp. Ayers is a gooder too. It’s not a huge group of imp lbers (either in size or number of bodies) but it’s really talented.
-
I think we are really well poised considering we didn’t keep Clement’s in the off season. We have some really high upside imps. But you never know we’ve cut blue chip guys soo fast their head would spin in the past. Aside from gauthier monstering his way to the role by beating every one out (not highly likely) if Cole ends up as our starting S, we’d be a kyrie injury and or rookie flop away. Both of which is more likely. While he had a career performance in the gc, and he isn’t the last Canadian on our roster who should start, we are already trending to be over the ni starter amount. We should by no means go 2 over. I think the other main chance would be if neuf was really hurt and we had to flip to 3 imps on the ol. Though even then I think it’d be kola Eli and Dobson inside with big Gabe as 6th ol. The rookie imps are perfectly set up with a chance to succeed in a big way though. Ayers, Moses, petrishen, gemmel, and Thomas have a huge opportunity. Cole has the big leg up being a 2nd year guy, but I think he’s bound for S.

So000 lol I want the balance personally. Would you be inclined to watch cis over nfl? Not apples to apples by any means, but interesting none the less. I’d like some semi pro ni only feeder to recycle guys who fall out of the cfl but it isn’t likely to happen. I’d be interested in a 4 starter min being flirted with, certainly before the naturalized American spreads to be 3 or 4 guys. Might be fun to break down how our roster would shake down in that case.
-
For sure Moses has soo much upside and if he struggles we can always switch to gauthier etc. Agree with all that. Idk what the optimal ratio set up is to balance both worlds, but if any thing I think we need more roster simplicity not more intricate ways to get none nis on the field.
-
100%. Gonna be a good coach or even SC guy when he retires any way.
-
-
You say this here, but then are dictating that the league and teams dont know how to coach tackling or prevent concussions as well as you. You went from saying Americans who don’t come north to play in the cfl aren’t good enough, to Americans never lose spots to Canadians, to our roster use is infallible. I’m not surprised you’re confused having moved them soo much in little over one page of discussion lmao
-
What’s your point? You’re the one moving the goal posts to cover up a bad take.
-
Have you paid attention to the past two years? We specifically got an extra pick then year for doing that that. And yes, Americans compete with Canadians for back up spots. We’ve literally di’d guys not to use them at all. You can bury your head in the sand if you like, but doesn’t change the fact we haven’t gotten the most out of the roster. We’ve refused to use the naturalized American as well.
-
This would be fantastic. Personally I think one more ni or global as well would be good.
-
Yes, they are. Teams, like us, have been starting more nis then required. That doesn’t include back ups. Americans and Canadians compete against each other for back up spots as di/american. It does, but it’s a fine balance. The quality on the field it self would and has improved with being reduced and augmented. But the enjoyment of the league is greater with Canadians and with Canada producing better and better talent. The fact we can’t keep most of the top 10 ish best players (or where ever the elite cut off is each year) and the fact barely Canadian guys shoot to the top of the draft even as fringe players in the ncaa tells you all you need to know about the talent level. I love that we have Canadians in the game, I wouldn’t want the game with out it. But it would be better in terms of on field quality. I think what said earlier by dt was they have to miss one week. You can revoke the 6 Game but I don’t think you can before missing at least one game.
-
Figured it would be injury list guys. I think biggie is just on rest he sounded like he was good to go on BFS with bauming the other day. Parker I hope is well soon. Noah just can’t stay healthy damn. I can’t imagine neufeld retiring wouldn’t be announced in a better way. He’s been here like 10 years.
-
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong. Often the most talented guys are the hardest to bring up and push through the visa process. No different than college programs have to work hard on the high talent guys who struggle with academics. As it is we will probably never see a guy who cashed NIL cheques in the ncaa up here. We often have guys on the NL for over a year, that’s not just waiting out nfl chances that’s convincing guys to come up.
-
I think a lot of people, especially fans, under estimate just how hard it is to get American players who’ve never heard of the cfl to come up here. Especially from the south. Front office types scouts especially work americans more than they sleep. coaches, state side agents, and nfl/ncaa scouts are 90% of the pipe line. Guys like Mac win these types over and they help sell kids who are on the out side of the nfl trajectory.

2023/2024 CFL (Non Bombers) Off Season News

Yeah. safety over aesthetics is understandable. I worry that better helmets and guardian helmets are not the answer to the problem. Plenty of offensive players already use their helmet like a weapon. Is a defensive player going to be called if that thing is the first point of contact? How hard would it be to tackle a qb with one on legally? -
Don’t need to have that much of a wr skill here as a kr to back up. But yeah, making the roster as an imp rb here is about as easy as becoming qb1 as a rookie here in week 1 with no injuries.
-
And got exactly the positions we needed to fill as well. I'd love to see samson break out as well and become platoon partners with Lawson in side.

Mos made a great comment in the presser yesterday. He said that they all really value both CMI and Clercius going into their last ncaa season knowing they weren't going to get the reps that they wanted, but sticking it out with their teams any way and finding new roles to support their teams. Its some thing you dont see in the transfer portal era. Guys hit it and quit it soo fast now. I mean we have lots of guys who transferred multiple times on the roster. It takes a special mind set for guys like that, especially soo talented and athletic to choose loyalty to their program even if their program doesn't choose it to them. Really makes me think both those guys are gonna overachieve here.
