    Does this sound familiar?

A little more relevant for the NFL where you have 3 downs to get 10 yards but not entirely off base for the CFL.

The changes to illegal contact/pass interference have made "locking down" receivers far more challenging - if you don't get pressure on the QB relatively quickly there will be an open receiver.

In the CFL I think defensive sets that give QB's more lower percentage/higher reward looks might be more optimal.

Anyone else starting to think the Nichols might actually be a real starting QB? He is starting to remind me of what we hoped Willy was going to be.

I mean... when the guy first showed up in the league he looked REALLY good... but then broke his leg badly.  Won his job in competition with Reilly... and then tore his ACL in preseason (at which point Reilly had clearly established himself as the starter.

If Nichols had never broken his leg/tore his ACL there is a reasonable probability he would still be the starting QB in Edmonton right now.

Glenn was on the radio talking about this recently.  He refused to assign blame but he did say that he and Roberts had discussed it since and both agreed there should never have been an option to hand off or not on the play.

Definitely agree the hit wasn't dirty... I mean he was diving for a loose ball and bad luck put Glenn's arm in a place to get broken

The Wylie supper at a 529 Wellington, as I understand it, is a promise made by him for when the OL achieve 3 things in one game:

    1) 0 sacks

    2) 100yds rushing

    3) Win the game

Neat thing for them to do at any rate...

If that's the case they came damn close to getting treated two weeks in a row.... might get expensive for Wylie

This, more than anything else, has allowed Nichols to flourish where Willy has faltered. I'd love to see Willy behind this Oline. I think he might surprise.

The thing is - Willy had some of the same opportunities to push the ball downfield that Nichols has taken... he just consistently missed open targets when he had the deep ball opportunities.

If a team doesn't feel like the opposing QB is going to burn them downfield (which Willy showed he was increasingly gun shy in trying to do) they just tee up on the short stuff.

I'm not sure how I feel about the optics of asking a guy to restructure mid season.

Generally I would agree, but I mean the guy has to realize that his contract was based on him starting for the team throughout the season.

In his current position I would almost welcome the proposal to restructure... given that if the Bombers don't restructure it is almost certain that he will be cut... with any offers from teams looking to pick him up being nowhere near what he is currently making, nor likely to even match what I expect the Bombers will offer in a restructured contract (which will likely end up with a much smaller base salary and options to increase back up to 400k if he starts some games)

Its allways been a heavy advantage to run a hurry up offense. It how ever takes a great deal of co ordination and smooth fluid communication from all the players and the sideline. The best offenses in modern cfl history for the most part will use sub packages and set up plays (screen passes then hitch n go, pump n go etc) to get the defense to change personnel. Some D rotate players regularly. Like our DL. You get a favorable match up and go right into hurry up to force the D to stay in that favorable match up. It also gets you to the line fast enough that the QB can read coverage and change the play or tweak it. Or Do a run up. Where it seems like the offense is about to snap but doesnt. This forces the D to tip there hand and often times if they have any thing tricky called to return to a base form D.

But like i started with, that is very hard to run. If you can execute a high up time hurry up offense you can do any thing you want on O.

Some teams have done that for short yardage, or Under some previous coaches we'd go spread package no backs and try to thin out the defense. The idea being its 4 DL on 5 ol and a qb. Again you have to have an over power OL to pull that off. And if you can pull that off normally a traditional heavy set wont be any harder.

Our offense with both qbs has looked its best in hurry up. But cant yet sustain it. But with the constant shuffle we have seen with offensive starters its hard to build the consistent communication and execution to pull it off.

Wasn't it a couple years ago where the Bombers tried to run a consistent high-tempo offense and the ref's would take eons to blow the ball into play, thereby completely cancelling the advantage of up-tempo.

I vaguely remember the league changing something to make up tempo more possible recently.

calgary touchdown pass 7.55 third quarter was undefendable, perfect pass, to a receiver running full speed , who makes an excellent grab. No team could stop that one. game was over after that.

calgary  had some crazy good catches in that game.

Two for 14 points, that were plays of the year.

I'd argue that wasn't a perfect pass... anytime a receiver needs to catch the ball one handed from over his shoulder while at a full sprint there was problems with the pass.  I'll agree that if the ball is thrown with any less steam there is a good chance the defender is able to break up the play... but that tells you that the receiver was basically not open other than by making an insane play (I.E. you can't really be upset with the DB on that play)

Its a bit frustrating when the opposition always seems to have such tight and aggressive D on us...making our O so difficult.  And then when its reversed, our D just seems to never be that tight or aggressive.

I suppose its the fault of our O to a degree.

At the end of the 3rd quarter Calgary had the ball for almost DOUBLE the amount of time we had the ball.

You could say our defense wasn't getting off the field, but really it was our offense not staying on the field.

Fortunately, not true...... Bowman still drops as many as he catches. It's just that every second passing play is to him. One of the most over rated guys in the league.

I mean... Sure his Targetted vs. received for 2015 was 8-10% lower than the other 5 top receivers in total yards.

I would trade 10 % more drops than average (average for the best receivers in the league by yards) for a receiver who has averaged 1350 yards in the last two years.  I mean we've struggled to find a 1000+ yard receiver since he left....

I will admit that I've mostly only watched him when playing against Winnipeg and I seem to be remembering the games where he had caught 70% of the many many passes thrown to him (and that includes passes where the QB simply missed)

  11.

Why would the riders trade Messam? Is he a free agent after this season? Messam has been the Riders best player this year, bar none.

I would bet that Mr. Messam felt out of place in a small city like Regina, and would have been gone at the end of the year anyways. The Rider faithful were likely chafing that McCallum had to be brought back to a team that dumped him so unceremoniously.

Also... isn't McCallum like 800 years old?

  12. Picards snaps are brutally bad.. they so slow up the entire offense tempo.. you can see it.. Backs are sluggish, recievers waiting or off their routes..

I gotta think that Picard's snaps are part of the reason we are having so much trouble with blitz packages this year.

Generally, if you make the right read; have the right protection; and your receivers adjust their route correctly (go hot), the QB still barely gets the ball off in time to avoid being a target for a big hit.

Picard's snaps taking an eternity to get to the QB has basically meant that our QB's get nailed consistently on blitzes because everything they are doing takes that much longer after when the defense can start going for the QB

  13. Ottawa is definitely not a pushover this year... just inconsistent

Looking at our remaining schedule and the teams that we are in competition for playoff spots...

    BC - @CGY, @EDM, SSK, WPG, @EDM, HAM, @TOR, CGY
    WPG - @MTL, CGY, EDM, @BC, @OTT, OTT, @TOR
    MTL - WPG, @SSK, @OTT, TOR, HAM, @TOR, @EDM, SSK

I think BC got the hardest schedule, followed by us then MTL.

Thanks for doing this. BC definitely has the most difficult schedule of the 3. I'd say it's a toss up between us and Montreal after that. Looking at your chart, I like our chances though!

  14.

Reminds me of Troy Smith in terms of raw skills. Hopefully he can learn how to pass in this league.

Agreed 100 per cent. If he comes here, he'll be a project. This isn't a bad move though by any means.

Personally...I think everybody gave up on Smith too early.

Straight up... brought in and expected to be a CFL starter in his first year.... basically nobody ever does that

  15.

Everyone assumes these experienced coaches would want to come here buy I think it's obvious they don't because of the lack of stability. Was rumored we wanted to interview millanovich when we hired lapo but he said no thanks. Instead of pretending that these guys would come here and crapping on the people in charge, ask yourself why they won't come here. I give you a hint. .. it's because we fire coaches and gms every 2 years. Those experienced coaches won't come here until our perception changes

You can continue to state this until you are blue in the face, doesn't make it true.

Check and see how long the Argos kept Etch, Stubler and Andrus.  Didn't prevent them from signing Milanovich.

Hamilton fires Marcel in 2011, Cortez in 2012 and still manage to hire Austin ($$$) in 2013.

Andrus and Cortez are really bad examples, why don't you also include Danny Hawkins in there?

(I.E. guys that were such incredible flops instantly as HC that they completely lost the trust of their players almost instantly)

  16.

I like this trade and I hope it means we are considering starting 3 American OL.

It's too bad that we put 5 years into Greaves and then he's gone for a second round pick but what can you do? Gotta make a move if it's not working out anymore.

Hey, we picked him up in the 5th or 6th round, got years of service out of him, and have now flipped him for a starter-ish, and a second rounder. That's pretty impressive.

Sure its not a bad result, better than cutting him in his first training camp like most 6th round picks. But I'd rather have a competent starting left guard than a second round pick at the moment.

It feels like Greaves was competent for years... hell the last 2-3 years (this year not included) he sometimes felt like the only guy on the Oline performing (him and maybe January).

It seems like he lost his step this year

  17.

Mulumba is pushing for a starting role. We will never see him, we can stop the watch lists.

Bilikudi is a possibility for next season.

Mulumba never should have been drafted. Why would any CFL team draft a 'good' Canadian is beyond me lol. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but if Mulumba does, say next year or the year after, ends up here, he's a UFA right? Bombers, for drafting him, only hold his rights for 1 or 2 years (if he's unsigned) then he's free is he not? What a joke our so called "Canadian Draft" is.

Mulumba was a stretch for the draft... but to be fair he was signed by Green Bay not drafted (and was if I remember properly eligible to be drafted in the NFL)

I think there is an argument that Mulumba could have easily spent his entire year on GB's practice roster, been cut after next years draft and been playing for us a year later... and then GB had almost every single starting linebacker get injured, giving Mulumba a chance to start in a game where he played well (good on him) and became a guy that wasn't so expendable.

It was a coinflip drafting Mulumba... it certainly wasn't guaranteed that he would end up sticking in the NFL for any time, nevermind looking to make a career for himself.

    fan poll cfl.ca biggest hitter

leader is Khalil Bass 46 % of 12000 votes.

you know what that poll proves... only Bomber and Rider fans are voting... I'm not sure what's more laughable... Elimimian and Bighill combining for only 7% of the vote or Brackenridge getting 37% of votes....

It was the same for the 'best hands' poll. Dressler won over Denmark with S.J. Green getting less than 10% of the vote.

SJ Green has awful hands. The fact that him and Bowman were even in that poll was laughable.

SJ Green has awful hands?  Isn't he the ridiculous catch master and in the running for most spectacular reception like every single year?

Bowman had bad hands in Winnipeg - it was REALLY unfortunate that we had to cut him because of all the drops since he's figured something out in Edm and is IMO one of the best receivers in the league ATM

  19.

I'm all for the 2 point try, but with Willy and not Marve making the plays. At least offers the illusion that we might throw the ball.

On the contrary that eliminates the QB sprint to the corner.  You can't lump Marve in with Goltz that easily.

For all of Goltz's faults... he was actually pretty money in the redzone (just couldn't actually get the ball into the redzone)

  20.

In an interview last year he said he can play centre and I've seen him take reps at centre in practice and training camp, but mostly on the side or during drills, not scrimmage.

I appreciate you for going to practice and sharing this knowledge with us.

I dunno... I figure Friesen will be there and offer excellent examination of what happens at practice... why would I need anyone else
