2024/2025 CFL (non-Bomber) Off-Season Thread
wbbfan replied to WinnipegGordo's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Injuries happen; it's not predictable. In his first five seasons as a starter, he missed a total of nine games. Last year he missed 8. I don't think injuries were a big factor in moving on from him. I think it's just the case that Clercius was ready to step into the same role for drastically cheaper and offer brilliant upside. Sometimes you make a move that isn't good on paper at the time, woli (ended up signing cheap), stove, lawler, that ends up working out in the end because guys don't stay healthy or have a pile of issues. Other times, you make moves that are good on paper, bringing Lawler back, not chasing Couture, not chasing Desjarlais, that don't work out because of unforeseen issues or replacements not going as well as expected. I'm a big believer that luck is the residue of hard work. A lot of our moves end up being fortunate, even if they weren't seen as great moves at first, because the front office is always grinding. Probably right. Woli would play on one leg with no hands if you let him. And he'd still provide a more reliable target than a ton of guys. Personally, knowing what Woli got, I would've walked away from Demski and moved Woli/Clercius into a heavier targeted role, while saving in the range of 125k in salary. But I do get moving on from Woli. It'll be really interesting to see what we want from WRs this year. Previously, Bourgoin, who was basically a clone of Lapo, seemed to have a big impact on the WR types. From what little Hogan showed in camp and PS, I'm certainly expecting a more dynamic passing game with more YAC and more sweep/motions again. -

This is what happens when we get a bye week in week 1. Off-season discussion mode 2.0 lmao. -
Great qb, decent few pieces, mostly trash team. Sadly, coaching is a weak spot. Maybe the worst in the league

Taits follow up piece on Mitchell was pretty good. That and his play/involvement in packages stuff was much better than what we saw early in camp. -
Report over, may be under 20k in reality.

For sure. In our quarters pack we essentially play it like fs/ss over the mid while the outside guys shadow the deepest route. The inside guys are the ones who make the harder switches and pick up what’s needed. And that was a lot of our 30/dime wil packs. Parker is a lot like ba. The speed, physical presence, the iq. If he’s back to what he was and 100% it’s gonna be great to have him in the line up. I would’ve liked to see him play more in pre season but he may well have been rusty and in need of getting his game speed wind back. We have a lot of pieces to like in the secondary. More pieces than gaps. And that’s despite our ni cover guys being hurt. I expect our secondary to again be very good, and only get better as guys get healthy and smith/shay/ayers/jjones step into bigger roles. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Shay get more snaps in cover positions. Imagine having two proper lbers on the field and the 3rd guy to the box on the other side is shay. -

Hes a lateral quick guy and not a physical guy. Hes not great at reading breaks and bending guys off their route. He wouldn’t be bad at S, but I don’t think he upgraded by moving to that spot. If any thing, in our system I think he’d be better as the dime/wil or maybe the Sam if we don’t use the same in run fits. Brings tremendous physicality despite his stature too. Hes a real down hill type. In our system I think a S is worth more than most in the cfl, but I do agree I think he’s better at half which is more valuable. IMO perfect world, I’d swap Kramdi to S, where he can play down hill and have time to make good decisions, holm to Sam out of the fits and Parker or griffin to half over holm in the fit. Even that though is a lot of change and I don’t think we need to change much. The time itd take to settle we’d be better off rolling as is. Having athletic/rangy physical lbers who can make tackles and actually be at proper depth making good decisions in the lber core is going to make a huge difference. We relied on the secondary a lot the last two years to basically also do the lbers job, and with no pressure from the front. -
Agree. I think chemistry is the most important factor in success. You don’t need tony romo dropping insider play call stuff or an all time gear pbp guy. Two people in the booth who are passionate about what they’re watching and who can Carry on a conversation people want to listen to makes all the difference. All I could think when I saw that was, “but why?” I hope he’s working for subway coupons or some thing. Tsn is probably going to be muted in my house the entire season.

Nichols sets the pace for all star dhbs in the league holm is in the second tier and last year wasn’t realistically at the top of that group. He we essentially never the guy in run fits either. He probably would start on most any team though. -

Tackles are not a success indicator at db. Even at lber they still aren’t. Dl? Sure. You can have good tackles and bad tackles as a db. If you are having an extremely high volume of tackles as a db it is a sign of a problem. A big chunk of their tackles are runs into the secondary and down field completed passes. In holms case, he has always played in the trail position a lot. He uses his acceleration to get back in on plays and previous put up a ton of pass knock downs. He didn’t do that last year. He was coming over and helping get stops on other targets sure, he was also tackling completions for first downs on his own guys a lot. With the overall secondary as good as it was last year, Kramdi and holms spots got targeted more. Nichols has been the best tackler in our secondary since bas gc injury. A db with more tackles then him is not succeeding more. Doesn’t mean Kramdi and holms have to go. Holm needs to gauge his gap better this year so his close is putting him in place to prevent a completion rather than make a tackle attempt. Kramdi needs to capitalize better on his instincts and play with in his skill set more on pass downs. -

He played a good bit in 3-4 games last year. He improved from early on but just kind of got to average. Didn’t show any thing special. Love to be wrong about him just don’t see much. -

Hes really only gotten chances at guard, not C. He sure has bungled those chances though. Hes barely played C since the end of 21. His snapping is fine, just not in practice enough imo. In general the snap to the pistol should not be difficult. Not like the old days of snapping to shot gun. Wish we never lost couture. -

Team wise I think it does offer an opportunity. More prep time for strevy rookies etc. Parker has done every thing but stay healthy. Love what he brought before the injuries. If he’s similar to what he was before it’s going to be ba esq. -

Seems like it. I'm very curious to see how the roster shakes down for week 1. Is Griffin staying at Dime as a DI? If he does, who is going to KR? How are we going to work the imp Lbers? Week 1 bye sucks as a fan lol. -

Jacked that it's cam mainly at DT. I get rolling with Parker despite limited PS play/success, he's done a lot in the past, even in limited reps. I don't get what we see in bridges. But we always start out with a guy or two like him that gets swapped out after a few weeks. Not that he's awful, he isn't rock cartwright or tyquwan glass. Just maybe this years version. -

Rourke. Highest paid guy in the league by a lot. Milligan is solid on teams and a good db. He isn't the best but he's good. Db is a position you expect guys to excel at quickly to. At qb, the sophmore year is a hard hit and the way you really judge em is how they bounce back from that. Rourke is at that judging point now, but being paid like he's flutie 2.0. Coasting off his first half a year as a starter, which was 3 years ago is nuts. Rourke could be the 3rd or 4th best qb in the league this year, and that would still leave him wildly over rated and paid. I think he has as good a chance at having another brutal year as he does of being 3-4. -

Averages aren't everything. Evans was hitting angles, he wasn't suddenly shanking punts. Also, in the first game Evans averaged 53.5 to Sheahans 43. I would've gone with Evans, but I get PRing him. I understand that we can't force him and that he left for a chance to actually play. That alone, should tell you all you need to know though. The riders wouldn't have been scooping sheahan. -

I don't agree that it was closer than perceived. I haven't seen a multi-year incumbent punter with such frequency to shank punts be handily the best punter on any team with competition. Sheahan is Mos' guy, it's really that simple. Evans wasn't like some guarenteed golden leg reincarnation of bob cameron. But everything I saw and heard, he was clearly better. Even angle punting and hang time, Evans was better. But his speed at getting the ball off and consistent abilit to drive the ball down field a lone set him head and shoulders above Sheahan. Dude is good for at least 1 shank a game/practice, and prone to shank streaks on top of that. He has good games, and he has games that aren't brutal. But he is very consistent in smoking a ball off the side of his foot out of bounds for a net 10 if we are lucky. If you break down his splits, it would be sickening how many under net 25s he has.
