2024/2025 Blue Bombers Off-Season Thread
wbbfan replied to TBURGESS's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
We struggled more finding a good vet wr in fa. We did well with our own guys. And for a long time, wr was the excuse. It hasn’t been our primary limiting factor for a long long time. It was who and how we got WRs the ball. Not much any wr can do when every d knows the pass is going to be with in 5 yards of the line and short of the first down. -

Yeah, he's a catch-and-run guy. Mitchell is our over-the-top guy. But the old-style over-the-top deep threat is more about usage, it's IMO 40 ish yard completions where you've gotten behind the D and beat them over the top. Darvin Adams didn't have as many 40-50-yard catches despite being that guy. -

We should be able to find a good wr. Especially now that we are looking at more diverse skill sets at that position. Not just an army of 6’2 +/- 1, 215 +/-5 guys who run a 4.55-4.6. Im interested to see how we do finding ol, and dl with the front office changes. We’ve struggled with ends for ages, and imp tackles for a while. -

I agree with that. We lost talent off the top and answered it with depth. Agree. I think secondary is better. As ford to import at the easiest position in the secondary is a wash at worst. The rest will improve by having a second year with a bunch of guys. Plus moving on from ba will improve us imo. our ol will be a bit better by having time to play with each other. Our imp depth is much better but our ni depth is worse, and our star power too level talent is worse. We will be far more susceptible to injuries on the top end of the roster, we need vets we picked up to excel in our system and we really need to hit on an all star with in our development guys and rookies. -

At some point I wanna do a thread based on the building styles and what’s changed this year. I’m really interested in seeing how our approach pans out. I like it a lot actually. Though I wish we prioritized some positions like ol a lot higher. if you look at it the bottom 3 teams are big buyers every year the top 3 mostly rely on trades and shrewd moves. Bc has been flipping big contracts more in free agency than top 3 teams usually do, because they keep trying and missing on big guys so they frequently have that room to do so. Plus they just don’t care about the cap. But you look at the lions and Argos their biggest moves have been trades. If there is a big negative this off season for us, (aside from not getting away from old can’t get it done guys) it’s that we’ve missed out on a ton of value in trades when the teams in our range have been cashing in. -

Sneaky good pick up imo. Like Dexter as a guy who can elevate the battle for the last starting db. Really like Trey vaval and cam Allen too. Allen isn’t a crazy athlete but average ish. Tremendous instincts and a great fit for our system if he can manage the open field speed. Hes another natural safety which is really interesting. Though I could see him playing an inside wall defender in our drop 7 scheme. vaval is another down field on the ball play maker. 5 blocked kicks in college which is pretty insane. Not an elite athlete but a much better on the field guy than a tester. -
damn beat me to it

They would be a great use of some of the money. I think they will also give more money to some rookies to get them north earlier than they might’ve normally come. plus I think we still take one or more free agent stabs at mid level starters/rotational guys. -
Yuuuuup. We could’ve gotten nice assets for zach then, and locked in brown on a team friendly deal allowing us to add another high level free agent with ease.

Nice depth pick up if he’s healthy. We really need back end Canadians like this. -

Yep pretty much. Dyson, benedict ibisi, Moe elowanebe, we had a good length run of IMP centres after dave vankoughnett retired. We had a guy for a few games andrew jones I think, who played with khari. He was like 6'11. -

Agree. I think centre is almost as good a position to go imp at as rt. Pass rushes aren’t as blind side heavy as they used to be, but you can still slide roll and do a lot to help a rt. Having a great centre who can allow the guards to help the tackles more goes soo far. Plus having a guy at C who is athletic enough to get down field not just on zone assignments but on the back side of plays when Dts don’t stay in the play is huge. -

Some more diverse run schemes and secondary motion threats will help too. I’d love to see 3 imp ol though -

Elk cut j min pelley. Wonder if we sign him so we can play him beside Jake and have the two slowest linemen in the history of football. great breakdown. Largely agree. I think we will likely be better on the field this year that last year. But, our margin for error at most positions will be drastically smaller. If we see comparable health struggles as we did last year, we will be screwed. Qb and rb agree. wr, weaker than going into last season, stronger than what we actually fielded last year. ol same as wr. Weaker than last year on paper before playing but I think it’ll be better in actuality. db I think we will be better in terms of talent. Guys going into their 2nd year as starters, plus griffin getting a bigger role. I think we go ni at S and end up being the same ratio wise. Lber much improved. dl likely improved in actuality. agree on teams and depth. -

They don't though... Not the best OL or QB room by a mile. It is a really good move, not too surprising. They try to buy an OL every year basically. -

Moved to retired. We still had his rights? Iirc he was drafted in 21 and had a bad injury. Think he came back for a camp another year and was cut. I don’t think he was in camp last year. I’ll be happy to have ayers if he’s back. I’d love to see Ayers and Jon jones on the field together. -

Ayers has a fliers chance of making a team as a teams guy. A coach can always fall in love with that high iq, athletic, great hustle on teams. Especially with a young guy. But I’d bet on him being back. -

Same improvements we see every season from the bottom and mid tier teams plus bc just spending. Looks good on paper till you look at what they had before they added pieces. -

Is the west rising? Cus I still see a lot of poor built teams here. The whole landscape as been squished but it isn't getting squishy-er. If we run a good offence under hogan, and I think we will, yes. I think strev has as good a chance to lead us to the play offs as most any QB that's moved this off season. Strev is the guy who saved our season last year. If we didn't end up going to him when we did, we never turn that ship around. -

Great coaches can still be very flawed. Lapo is a great coach. He isn't great at being an OC, and as a HC can't keep his hands off the offence. If he could accept a HC role where he leads his coaching staff and they run his systems, he'd be an amazing HC any where. Mos is flawed and great as well. He is a world-class culture setter, with one of the highest work ethics you'll ever see. His roster-making is his Kryptonite. He really believes that the rando back ups are as good as the stars in front of them. Because they could be, but many won't and aren't. It's not that hard really, khari was a flawed but great QB. He threw more picks than TDs to guys not named milt. Danny mac too. If blink was a gym rat, if Biggie was bigger, etc. It comes down to a question of, what is the goal. Is our goal to win Gcs or play in them? We are not doing every thing required to win GCs, and haven't the past 3 years. We are doing enough to get to them. -

Don't think he replaced Hubert, but gives us some versatile depth. Realistically he looks like an end-of-the-NI roster guy. But a Canadian who can basically play the same role and impact as the Seal is nice to have. -
Vaj as a back up isn't sustainable but yeah. I think masoli is a better guy as a game manager, and extra coach to help rourke too.
