  1. We hope Willy can push himself ahead of guys like Glenn, Collaros, and the two other guys, but he hasn't this season.

You can blame our OL, our injured receiving core, or the beatings he has taken, but Willy hasn't proven he can score in the red zone or elevate those around him. Right now, I have him ahead of the Ottawa-version of Burris, and Crompton, but he hasn't shown more than anyone else yet.

Play calling in the red zone has negatively impacted us as well....If I see one more fade route??????

People need to stop bitching about Grigsby....Tied for third in rushing...leads in rushing TDs....second In yards Recieving by RBs to Andrew Harris. Similar yards as Whitiker who plays behind a far superior o line than Grigsby. What exactly do people expect from Grigsby?

Have you watched him play? He's a poor running back. Decent receiver though.

I'd start Grisby ahead of Romby.

I wouldn't go that far, however, I think the Bombers should seriously consider converting Grigsby to receiver over the offseason. He's average at best as a RB but he could be a dynamic receiver if he was able to make the transition. A young Jamel Richardson in the making. It would take some work and carries some risk but the payoff could be huge.

did you miss the TD drop with no one within 10 yards of him last week?

We throw a bomb on 3rd and 5.....turnover

I noticed no Good/Bad separation here. Not surprised.

Total brain cramp by MOS on the 3rd and 5. He said in the post game interview he didn't think Lirim could kick a FG into the wind like that. Okay seems like a decent answer only one thing missing - we have a punter, his name his Lirim.

I've seen a lot of games in my lifetime and I would not put the wind in this one in the top 100. Was it that bad he could not punt the ball? Maybe a handfull of games have punters been told to not punt due to wind.

I drove 7 hours to Ottawa that night and it wasn't that windy in the stadium

  4. Guys,

I've read through this thread this morning and see a number of different views.  From 5-1 glory, to 1-6 goat, Willy has been the exact same guy at the microphone after every game.  During the 5-1 stretch, he was as humble as can be deflecting complements from the press to his team mates who were "making plays" around him and stressing how he and his teammates wanted to "do every thing they can to make the province proud".  During the recent stretch he has been playing with an aching body yet going out there week after week and playing his guts out for this team and this province.  Once again he has stood at the microphone, taken the heat and fallen on some grenades for his teammates from the press for this team.  We have never heard a word of excuses from him in post game press conferences and he has always manned up at the podium.  Yes he's made some mistakes and missed a few throws on Saturday, but if you started this year knowing that we would have achieved twice as many wins as last year, I would have signed up for that.  He didn't go home during the bye week, but stayed in Winnipeg getting as much medical treatment as possible to get back on the field for us fans and I use the term loosely with some on this board.  How many offensive first downs were called back because of holding penaltie's and how many drops have we had?  How much have we missed not having Nick Moore on the field?  How much have we missed two defensive starters out with season ending injuries since TC?

We are very close as a franchise.  We need work on both lines, our LB's are two small, we need better Canadian depth, our discipline in some of the penalties we take are ridiculous and our special teams at times fall down.

To come on here and bash Willy (who is probably more critical of himself than any player I've seen) is insane.  We finally have a guy who loves to play for our province and leave everything on the field.  Some of you on here are just plain nuts.  I rarely post because rationale arguments with some of you don't fly, so I don't bother.  That being said, the man has one year on his contract left and I'm reading comments like "I'm not trying to run him out of town".  You want him to be accountable in this forum, when he has done nothing but BE ACCOUNTABLE in his public comments the entire season!

5-1 and enjoying free dinners in Winnipeg....Mr. P is right you don't have a clue or know a thing about the man.

My two cents.  Anyone going to Ottawa?

    Go Bombers!

  5. Willy has been playing hurt all year with two injuries to throwing hand, rolled ankle, shoulder and I'm sure a bunch of aches and pains that we don't even know about.  Very tough guy who has waiting this long for his shot and just wants to do everything he can to help the team on the field.  If he practices today or tomorrow, he is playing come Saturday.  The only way that doesn't happen is if Mike O'Shea decides to give him an extra week to heal more, which he has been inclined to do with most players this year.  Not sure about this one though, so I would bet he plays.

Pass speed is basically one of those meaningless statistics.

    Interesting read though.

I disagree that speed is not important. We often talk about QBs having 'zip' on the ball. It helps to prevent interceptions if you have some speed and accuracy, which it looks like Willy has. Hall is accurate but has no speed on his throws beyond 10-12 yards.

Having speed on your throws doesn't make someone a good QB, but if can help.

I guess what I should've said is that the FASTEST pass speed is meaningless. I agree you need to throw fast, as that article mentions, if you're under 54 mph you're basically given no chance in the NFL. Who throws the fastest is just a fun blurb stat, though.

Just to get back on topic after that fun interlude.  While I agree fast does not matter a whole lot, fitting the ball into tight windows requires timely release, leading the receiver, being accurate and some ZIP.  While zip is nice, touch is also important and knowing when to take something off a throw to get over the linebackers or on fade routes is equally important.  Drew Willy has both of those traits and the zip required to hit out routes on the wider Canadian field is very noticeable in guys that don't have zip as the ball ends up in their end zone.  Can't wait until June, hope we fix the line by then.  Go Bombers!

I wonder how much better the line could be just from better quarterback play.

It's usually the reverse where the job of the O-line is to ensure the QB and RB's can do their jobs, i.e., poor QB play is mostly a result of the O-line BUT it's a good reminder it works the other way as well..

A mobile QB can make an average offensive line look above average.

AS CAN A QUICK RELEASE QB

  8.

Drew Willy was always in the mix for us since he was a pending FA, and, personally, I'd rather have a young guy with some promise, maybe, than Burris or Glenn, even if it means another year of pain.

I like ZC because he is more mobile and lets go of the ball quicker than Willy. Its not surprising McManus likes DW - they are pocket passers, both.

I thought we had a chance at Collaros but I don't see not getting him as a failure, it seems for whatever reason, he didn't consider Wpg an option.

Looking around the league, I expect Troy Smith will tear it up this year, along with BLM if he can stay healthy in Calgary. Honestly Collaros could catch fire or bust in Ham, who knows? Lulay and Reilly, meh.

I haven't heard much about Levi Brown who was on our practice roster and who I assume will be invited to Bomber TC to compete.

Turns out Brown and Willy are good pals, since both were on the Sask roster for 2012 and part of 2013 before Brown was released:

So they will be glad to be together again in Winnipeg.

Here's what I wonder: if he shows so much promise - why didn't SK try harder to keep Drew Willy? And what about Levi Brown? He played for Cortez in Buffalo and Regina but also was deemed expendable.

What do we know that SK doesn't?

SK is very high on their 3rd string QB, making Willy expendable. Willy also told SK he'd be testing free agency because he wants an opportunity to start. That wasn't going to happen in SK with Durant entrenched as the starter.

Exactly right.  They would have been glad to have him come back if he didn't sign here

  9. For me it was partly that he was a Roughie but I have already forgiven his misguided past. If there had been no Collaros then Willy would have been the jewel of free agency. Only time will tell who is the better of the two. Maybe they'll both be dominant QB's for years to come, that would be nice.

Remember as a player coming into the league two years ago he could ONLY sign with the Riders because of the negotiation list restrictions, so he didn't have a choice.  As it turned out it was a good choice as he got a Grey Cup and good experience.  The future is bright for the Blue Bombers
