  1. Heard he's in negotiations with New Orleans.
  2. Very interesting read: Free Agency Frenzy By Darren Cameron, Director of Communications & Media Relations Free agency is usually a crazy day in the CFL. Over the past few seasons, it was relatively quiet around our office. Last season, GM Kyle Walters and his team went in with a plan, and though it didn’t pan out entirely as planned, we were able to land coveted receiver Nick Moore. Back in December, I told you about days of meetings with the entire football operations department, including Assistant General Managers, Ted Goveia and Danny McManus, and National Scout Drew Morris. Along with Kyle and our Head Coach, Mike O’Shea, they listed a number of free agents that were high on the priority list. Around eight names were highlighted at the time. Knowing that many things change; some get re-signed, some try the NFL route, and some choose to go elsewhere, we headed into the morning of February 11 with a list of six or seven players that were still available. A lot of preparation, crunching numbers, film study, and roster evaluation had gone into preparing for that day, and when the clock struck 11 a.m., there sat Kyle in his office chair, leaning back, holding his IPhone a few inches from his face. The hunt was officially on. The plan was to have Ted and Danny also work with agents, while Kyle facilitated and watched the ongoing movement, while also speaking with agents regularly. Not much conversation took place as things rolled along early on, and there was little action in the first stages. But it picked up. Quickly. Early in the afternoon, Kyle calmly pointed out to Mike and I, who were both set up in Kyle’s office in the bowels of Investors Group Field, “We are good on Darvin Adams.” Adams had a great career with Auburn, winning a BCS National Championship with Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, and has spent time with the Argos since. He is a player the team has had its eye on for a long time now. Here a few clips of Darvin ( ), and this one, as part of an SEC Championship Game record 237 yards ( ). From there, things snowballed. Like one of those days you picture everything going the way you had envisioned, without many hiccups, one by one we were able to pick off the guys we had targeted. It was made very public that heading into free agency we had planned to target offensive linemen. With the signings of Dominic Picard a few weeks prior, we knew that the opportunity to acquire a left tackle – Stanley Bryant or SirVincent Rogers – was both available and necessary. We were aggressive in pursuit of both, and knowing how unpredictable free agency can be, we were prepared for any possible scenario. We first saw the report of SirVincent going to Ottawa through a Twitter post. When I relayed the information, the room went silent. Kyle looked at me, then looked over at Mike, and without hesitation picked up his phone. He didn’t say who he was calling/emailing/texting, but before he could get through the numbers, his office phone rang. Ted Goveia was on the line, “Guys, I’m calling with a left tackle,” he said in a steady but urgent voice that only Ted can do. “We are agreeable on the numbers for Stanley Bryant”? Ted was on the speaker, and Kyle said, “so this is done?” It was. The back to back CFL All-Star tackle was headed our way, making us four-for-four in free agent targeting. Coach O’Shea, with his feet up on a table, smiled, “good day so far, boys.” It was shortly after this that President and CEO Wade Miller came through Kyle’s door. He had been out doing speaking engagements as part of the Blue Bomber Winter Caravan (http://www.bluebombers.com/rural-winter-community-caravan), and had dropped in to see how everything was going. Things had slowed down at this point, and as we sat in Kyle’s office talking over the day’s events, Coach O’Shea looked over at Wade and thanked him for allowing the team to go out and acquire who they felt were important to succeed. As usual, Wade brushed it aside, suggesting this is just the way it should be. But Wade really does do whatever it takes for the organization to be put in the best position possible. Whether it’s spending the money to acquire talent on the field or on the coaching staff, to chartering aircrafts and ensuring the proper accommodations are provided for the players’ comfort, he gets it. Plain and simple. Now the focus, from a roster standpoint, shifts to the CFL Draft in May, while also continuing to add pieces through our U.S. free agent camps. With the trade of Cory Watson last month, we now hold three picks in the first 20. I have heard Kyle speak highly of this year’s draft multiple times, at one point calling it ‘the best in a long time.” As policy would have it, I can’t share his specific thoughts on players or who we are looking at just yet, but it’s safe to say we will be a better football team in the long-term after this year’s draft. I’ll touch more on that as the date approaches, and hopefully will be able to provide a bit more detail for you. With the announcement of Greg Knox as our Linebackers Coach, our 2015 coaching staff is now finalized. With the offensive staff remaining intact – much to the approval of quarterback Drew Willy – and a new defensive staff, there is much excitement about the depth of CFL experience on this staff. In total, the 2015 Blue Bombers coaching staff has won 14 Grey Cup titles, and played a combined 57 years of Canadian football. As our quarterback Drew Willy said the other day, “June can’t come fast enough.” If you have any blog ideas, feel free to contact me on Twitter @darren_cameron. Until next time. Darren
  3. Ain't no way Willy is signing his next paper with $250,000 printed on it. If he has a down year, sure there is. He has a bad year, he might be lucky to get $250k. I fully expect him to play great and sign a fat extension, but nothing's a guarantee. Still some risk involved in not signing before the season.
  4. Rider fans are quite critical of Sam Hurl so I watched some game tape of some of his starts from last season, focusing on him, and he really impressed me. Strong physical guy, seems smart and was good in coverage. After watching the video, and seeing he's only 24 years old, I think he's got a legit chance at starting.
  5. I actually thought Willy threw fine when on the run. Problem is that Bellefeuille never moved him around much in the pocket. Willy said in his presser that'll change this season.
  6. Willy might be betting on himself, which is something you will often see athletes do. If he has a big year, he gets $375,000 per season on his new contract. But a similar year to last season and he probably gets the same contract, at $250,000. As a fan though, I'd be more comfortable if we locked him up before the season. I wouldn't want to see him have a big year then have him bolt and sign with the Riders.
  7. Thanks guys. I didn't realize so many of these MLBs made such an impact in their rookie season. Hopefully a guy like Shamari Benton can step in right away and do the same.
  8. Bombers name Greg Knox Linebackers Coach The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the addition of former CFL all-star Greg Knox to the coaching staff. Knox joins the organization to coach linebackers in 2015. Knox comes to Winnipeg after returning to the McMaster Marauders sidelines in 2014 as their defensive coordinator – his ninth season with the school – navigating the OUA’s top defensive unit to a Yates Cup win, and a Vanier Cup appearance. Knox had spent the 2013 season at the University of Toronto as their defensive coordinator, and previous to that, had spent eight seasons with McMaster, helping the school win two more Yates Cups, and the 2011 Vanier Cup, the first national title in school history. He originally took over as defensive coordinator for McMaster in 2006. Knox spent seven seasons as a defensive back in the Canadian Football League, winning two Grey Cups (Calgary 1992, Hamilton 1998), and was a two-time CFL All-Star.
  9. It's looking like this years LB crew will be significantly different from last years. Gone are Kuale, Wild, Sears and Dunn. The only sure thing right now it seems is Sam Hurl. Don Unamba might be a LB option too. My question is if Walters plans on relying on the recruitment department to bring in LBs from down south, how difficult is it for a LB to transition from American football (NCAA and NFL) to the CFL game? Are there any examples of a new to CFL MLB stepping right in in his first year and starting and having success? The Bombers most glaring need is at MLB, although some might argue Sam Hurl will start there, I'm a little skeptical of that. The MLB is a QB of the defense so needs to have a good understanding of the offense to call the defensive formations/plays. Could a new American MLB step in right away and fill that role and have success?
  10. Yes he was.
  11. How about a headline of: "Kyle Walters extends his Willy". "This off season Kyle Walters got better protection for his Willy"
  12. Something strange going on with the Curran situation.
  13. @PentonKirk: Brian Peters, according to sources, is negotiating with the New Orleans Saints, who have become quite #CFL friendly. #NFL
  14. @WoodsyCJME: A CFL source told me tonite that Kevin Glenn has decided to sign with the Riders..perhaps as early as tomorrow.Nothing official yet #riders
  15. @ArashMadani: Per #CFL sources: Riders make two offers to Kevin Glenn. A one-year deal and a two-year (incl/ option). Fueled with playing time incentives.
  16. @ArashMadani: Word I'm getting on the Kevin Glenn sweepstakes: Als offer is higher than Sask bid. Makes sense - Crompton makes far less than Durant. #CFL
  17. @sportscage: Hearing a rumour that QB Kevin Glenn will be a Roughrider within days
  18. Who is 38Tosto38? Keith Toston. Riders RB last year.
  19. @scratchingpost: RT @Jim_Mullin: Unbelievable! @SFUFootball still without a coach as Fowles rejects admin offer. Back to square one.
  20. Interesting...Bombers were never in on Curran either, according to Darren Cameron: @Darren_Cameron: @garrettbillan1 @CFL_News @TimCBaines we also never were.
  21. Sounds like there's a chance Bombers might be back in on Curran. Apparently Bombers never pulled their interest, but rather they lost the bidding war. Now it's coming out there may have been no bidding war.
  22. @38Tosto38: I am a member of the Calgary's organization.
  23. All I can see is Edmonton or NFL. I wonder if these reports of 4 teams were from his agent trying to drive up the price.
  24. A report out of Ottawa says the Redblacks are NOT in on Curran. Weird. Does this mean it's Edmonton or NFL??
  25. Thanks. I didn't know that.
