Friday Night Football - Bombers at Leos: GDT
K-Shack replied to Noeller's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Maybe I'm missing someone obvious, but who would be our rookie of the year candidate this year? Haha -- who only made it into a few games? ADS -- who played and then was PRed and then cut? Damian Jackson? That one would sure be something! No Alfords or Schoens this year to say the least. -
Michael O'Phea?

1. Brady. I'll plagiarize myself from the game day thread. Brady deserves the Andrew Harris treatment of getting the ball in some form 20-30 times a game. We are successful when we run our offense through him. It is the key to opening up everything else. When we go away from him, bad things happen (or at least the absence of good things). Nobody deserved the game winning TD more than he did. 2. Lawler. Guy can disappear for some games but when he's on, he's on. Without looking at the stats, my guess is that he was something like 9 catches on 10 targets. And from my eyes near the end zone that his route cleared out space for Woli's TD. (Looks like he was 9 for 11, but one incompletion Zach skyed the pass) 3. Parker. I think we may be better off with him at the boundary CB than with Rose there. And obviously his game saving TD. HHs to two oft-criticized players. Jackson for a catch out of the backfield and getting major props from teammates as he came off with a little celebration (caveat -- still a waste of a roster spot). Kramdi for some pass breakups including a key one in the 4th. Plus he got hosed on what shouldn't have been a PI in the first.

He should not be boundary CB -
I remember watching at Cincinnati in college and thought he was characterized as a bit of a dual threat. Looked up his stats and he ran for about 200-300 yards a season each of his starting years in college, plus a few years early in his CFL career. I fully agree that getting a few more runs would help him out. The RPO where he pulled it and ran for 8 or 9 last night was a good example. (I wasn't sure if it was a broken play at first but I think it was designed).
-
I really hope he gets our MOP nod in addition to the obvious MOC. He deserves both. I'm concerned that two of our highest paid players are not showing up on the regular. I wonder if the last two years and the 2019 cup run were actually a bit of an aberration for Zach Collaros. Always been a good-to-great QB, and I wonder if he's coming back down to that level after two years of undeniably MOP level play. And for Kenny Lawler -- he can show up and take over games and then go entire halves without getting a single target. Is he not getting open consistently? Is he being doubled?
-
1. Brady. I echo what @wbbfan said 100%. I'll add that I think he definitively is our MOP this year and I'd suggest MVP as well. I think we survive an injury to Zach better than an injury to Brady. He's the straw that stirs the drink. And his seal block opened up the edge for Prukop to walk in for the winning TD 2. Schoen. Clutch and smooth 3. Woli. I think he caught everything thrown his way? HH. Prukop. Did his job every time. My provocative question of the night -- given Zach's apparent regression, is he going to be worth his contract over the next two years? Would we be better off developing Brown? I'm less sure of the answer than I'd like to be and it's a moot point because we're obviously sticking with Zach, but it begs the question a bit at least. Zach is a surefire Ring of Honor inductee and I love everything he's done for us but he is so up and down this year, making some questionable decisions and ugly throws.

Good points, all around. Especially about time of possession mattering more than number of possessions, and the last 3 minutes of the fourth clearly mattering more than last 3 minutes of the second, which would be why teams tend to take the ball in the first after the coin toss when the winning team defers.
-
Yeah but I feel like the amount of times we defer at coin toss and then also choose to kick in the third quarter is higher with O'Sh than previous coaches, or perhaps than other current CFL coaches. That's the only point I'm trying to make.
-
I agree about the wanting the wind, but it is an extra possession in that we could have had the ball to start either the 1st or the 3rd but we chose to kick off to them instead. As it turns out, I'm pretty sure Saskatchewan had one or two more possessions than we did (as they started with the ball each half and, I believe, ended with the ball for a tiny possession each half). I'm not saying it's a bad decision, but it's a curious one that O'Shea continues to make. He must value having the wind in the long quarters much more than the ball in the short quarters.
-
O'Shea has done that often, and I've always found it strange. I guess he values the wind more than the extra possession, but from my seats up high, I don't think the wind was much of a factor yesterday and especially with the score as it was. Or to copy @DTonOB, perhaps O'Sh just wanted to give Jeffcoat a chance to crush Riders' souls

Evidently you're a pessimist 😝

I'm miffed thinking about all the TDs Burtenshaw could have had on FB dives
-
Agreed. He showed like he belonged. I was thinking of him too

1. Brady -- he's absolutely the Most Outstanding Canadian and perhaps the Most Outstanding Player in the league. 200 yards in 3 quarters and change. Unreal. 2. Zach -- efficient, 5 TDs, using his legs to extend a drive, that shovel pass to Brady. Wow 3. Kenny and Dalton -- Lawler earning his current paycheque and Schoen his future one. HH. Jackson (of the Jeffcoat not Damian varietal) -- a disruptive force and that strip sack. Wow. Good luck charm -- My 6 year old who went to her first game today and got to see us hang half a hundred on them. The second most special Bomber game I've attended after the 2019 Cup
-
McRae going to the PR makes it more likely that Jackson stays on the AR, unfortunately. I would hope that the new returner and Haba come on instead of McRae and Jackson

Trapped? Or does this look like control with his hands on either side? Edit: adding one more frame -

Without seeing the all 24 -- do you think they were doubling him tonight or was he just not beating Marshall? -

Lawler was invisible for much of the night until OT. Couldn't seem to get open even though it looked to my untrained eyes like it was mostly single coverage on him. Not playing like a #1 right now at all -
