Five days to impress or gone. More players coming thru for evaluations. Once a player gets a practice roster spot they usually are here longer than 5 days. The 5 Day Trial was used to evaluate & then activate those players if the coaches felt they could play. It was a quick fix & baptism by fire. Whereas PR players are there for further development. But it's essentially the same. If a team doesn't think a guy has a chance to be a CFL player when he joins the PR, they can send him home whenever they want, 5 days or 5 weeks. The advantage I see with this is that you are not limited to the number of players being brought in throughout the year, good call. There's no limit to the number of players teams can bring in throughout the year now either. Replace "tryout" with "practice roster" and it's the exact same thing. I do think the league could do something to promote some player movement and discourage player hoarding though, similar to how the players on tryouts had to clear waivers to remain on "tryout" kind of thing.

Kelly benched instead of Romby
JuranBoldenRules replied to gbill2004's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
That's funny, I've seen a number of times where Kelly goes up and contests for the ball over a few defenders, and...he comes down with the catch. Kelly's pretty good at leveraging defenders in zone, basically posting up in the middle of the field and taking some contact. Other than a highlight reel catch in the first game, I'd have a hard time saying I've seen him pull down any jump balls, which is what people expect his specialty to be when they see him. It isn't, and he's not exactly a beast when he needs to fight through a defender in any circumstance, which is why he's a 6'5 receiver with a great ACC career who never even got into a NFL mini-camp. Can't beat anybody. -
Kelly benched instead of Romby
JuranBoldenRules replied to gbill2004's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Yep. Romby forces the safety to make a decision a lot faster than Kelly does. Maybe. I don't think anyone respects Romby as a guy who can make any plays, speed or not. Bryant's speed is kind of the equivalent of having a 200 IQ but being the laziest person on earth, what difference does it make if he doesn't use it? Which is the equivalent of Kelly's height I suppose. If there's anyone within a few yards of Bryant, he won't win that battle for the ball, and everyone knows it. He can do something when teams completely lose track of him in the middle of the field though. To be honest, I'd prefer using Grigsby as a role player in and out of the backfield over dressing either Bryant or Kelly, but I don't trust our coaches to give Cotton a chance if Grigsby's on the roster either, so I'm fine with him sitting this week. -
Realistic Changes for Next Year
JuranBoldenRules replied to NotoriousBIG's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Realistically, they should start the auditions at import receiver and DL before this season ends, get some guys up here and get the guys up here who are prospects into a game or two. We need at least two import receivers, and two import DL. Peach, Kelly and Bryant need to go. Vega is iffy IMO, he could fully recover for next season, or could be pulling around a wonky leg/foot for the rest of his career. Might need to be replaced too. I like Booker so far, he could be one of those DL. Running back is pretty obvious too in terms of imports. Pretty sad, but Edmonton has played/cut 4 import RB's better than any guy we've dressed this year. Same could be said for Calgary and Toronto. Walters and company need to find some players south of the border for next season. NI's will be a longer term solution. -
Blindsiding a guy when the play is over is the definition of stupidity, especially since it was made a point of emphasis for officials, which players are well aware of. It's a pointless, selfish act, and that kind of crap is continually costing our team field position and points. Maybe Kuale should take up MMA, cause team sports sure aren't his thing. At least there his selfish stupidity will only hurt himself. He didn't blindside anyone on the play. They went face-to-face and neither player got the better of the other. Kuale has taken a number of stupid penalties but that penalty shouldn't have been called. The hit that was called was a late and unnecessary blindside, exactly what the officials are watching for. Kuale came across the field and blindsided Verdone on a punt return when our returner was already on the turf. Verdone popped up, they had words and Kuale tapped him on the head afterward. You must have missed the hit that drew the flag and only caught the aftermath.

Lawless: Bombers need to sign Ben Heenan
JuranBoldenRules replied to gbill2004's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Probably can't trade Watson either. He'll get injured on the flight to his new city and flunk the physical. It's too bad. -
I still think Calgary is tops in the west provided Cornish and BLM are healthy... but will they be? That's the real question. Whether it's health or attitude related, Cornish has been inconsistent this year. The Calgary team we saw last night won't make it out of the West. Only on pace for 2100 yards over 18 games. Could hit 3000 if he ever found consistency. He's only touched the ball 20 times once this season too.

Lawless: Bombers need to sign Ben Heenan
JuranBoldenRules replied to gbill2004's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
About the same as the Argos being sold and having a stadium deal done by next February 15. The Argos will pay Holmes what he wants. They have Wayne Smith starting at the opposite guard, I don't think they'll be playing around too much when it comes to getting Holmes signed. Only way Holmes or Heenan hit free agency is if they are looking for NFL deals. -
Sure...on the one out of fifteen UR's you've taken this season that wasn't a penalty. The only thing dumber than the penalties is his belly-aching in the media and on Twitter about them.

Tweaking Our Current Receivers
JuranBoldenRules replied to BigBlue's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Yep, he ends up being the hot read guy a lot too though. The Bombers aren't a team that always tries to match the blitz. Watson did a lot more blocking when Lapolice was the coach...and he still produced as a receiver. -

Ya, only one UR penalty. Whooo! -
Dressler? Taman was the GM in Winnipeg when Dressler was signed by the Riders.

Tweaking Our Current Receivers
JuranBoldenRules replied to BigBlue's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Yes. I expect Watson to be our 3rd receiver, which in an offence that is producing loads of 300 yard plus passing games with the #1 receiver out, should result in some production from him. His production is more what I'd expect from Kohlert, who is playing the field WR, about 500 yards over 18 games. Hard to believe that's the production we're getting from a guy who is in the slot every down. I mean, we can't see the film the coaches do and really pick it apart, but something is up. Either Bellefeuille just doesn't use Watson, which seems ridiculous to me given the state of our receiving crew without Moore and the amount of snaps he plays, or Watson isn't making plays. -
IMO, Volny is much more suited to run the ball in a zone blocking scheme like the one we use, and you can see that he's great at hitting a gap and getting upfield, but....I'd expect him to fumble about every 5th time he touched the ball because that's been his track record whenever he's seen the field in pre-season or regular season. The offensive line is not that bad in run blocking. It is ridiculously overstated, and your post is a great example. The RB is the problem. It's unreasonable to expect a situation where an RB gets through the line clean all the time, and that's basically what Grigsby needs to be consistently productive because he's so hesitant when it comes to finding/choosing a gap and getting upfield, then the first arm on him puts him on the turf. There are few RB's in the league that need as much help.

Tweaking Our Current Receivers
JuranBoldenRules replied to BigBlue's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
The problem is that Watson is declining though. He's a starting NI today, and even at that he'd be low on most teams list with everyone healthy. He can be a good player still, but it's going downhill quick, he's 30 with a huge injury history. I've seen the 2011-2012 Watson a few times this season, mostly in game 1 before he got injured again, but not enough to look at him as a guy I'd rely on moving forward. I don't think we can look at him as a top NI target anymore and if he is ours, we better have a lot of good imports or we are screwed anyways. We are basically in a spot where we need to replace him either way, with someone already on the roster or from somewhere else. If a desperate team wants to give us a shot at adding quality Canadian depth in probably the deepest draft we'll ever see with 9 teams picking, I wouldn't hesitate. -
Sherman is arguably the worst tackler we have on the field (Bucknor would be in that argument too), and he's pretty awful when he gets isolated in coverage too. A lot of our big breakdowns in D have been when he's been isolated, but it's been a combination of luck, Sherman mostly being used as a blitzer, a great safety and set of halfbacks who have saved our bacon for most of the season. Love Sherman's energy, he's pretty good at blitzing and he has a knack for getting the ball out of guys, but he's severely limited at this point. I'd give Bucknor the nod for worst tackler over Sherman. Sherman can whiff in space but Bucknor gets guys along the sideline where he has the opportunity to just push them out and whiffs on that, the much easier play. Both these guys have deficiencies in their game, it's not like we're way smarter than all the other teams for putting them in our starting lineup. We're making do with the injuries we've been handed. I've been impressed by both of them in that my expectations were much lower than what they've delivered. The question remains, are the Bombers better with Sherman at WIL so we can get Sears back in at SAM, or better with the status quo, cause Sherman probably isn't coming off this season. My point was more about his ability to handle increased physicality on the other side. The deficiencies in his game will show up wherever he lines up. Factoring in the ratio, I wouldn't sit someone to make room for Sears in the starting lineup. I'd use him as a DI. IMO, he'd be a huge upgrade on Unamba, who has been useless on D. Sears is great special teamer too, better to have guys in those DI spots who can actually function and play a role on D too. Same would go for Markett, don't really understand how Unamba has held his spot this entire season. Nobody is playing poorly enough to gamble on Sears' health though.

Tweaking Our Current Receivers
JuranBoldenRules replied to BigBlue's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
I'd agree if we were talking about 2011 Watson. We aren't. We probably never will see that player again. If we can get value for him and we turn it down hoping he's going to be more than an average player with some ability to do some good things every once and awhile when his body lets him, we're not building our team correctly IMO. This team is going to win in 2015 and 2016, and Watson likely will be a minor factor in that if he is at all. -
Situation is that we needed a DL... Pall was cut by Montreal and has barely played, Adebayo was on PR and has CFL experience Both were available. Except you can't simply claim a player off of a practice roster, that player has to agree to sign with the team attempting to claim him. Adebayo is from Edmonton, and he's played even less than Pall. He hasn't played less than Pall... Edmonton wasn't looking for DL depth when we were - Adebayo would not have said 'no thanks, waiting for someone to get injured in Edmonton...' Well, get your resume ready. Walters should be fired soon. Make sure you mention the Bo Adebayo fiasco and how you would have handled it differently in your interview.

Unless one of them handles all the returning, dressing two import tailbacks is a waste of a roster spot IMO. Not when Grigsby can't handle more than a dozen carries a game. Just hope they use the 2nd tailback and give him a chance.

Tweaking Our Current Receivers
JuranBoldenRules replied to BigBlue's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
I wouldn't trade him for just anything, but if we got offered a pick in the top 2 rounds in the 2015 draft, we'd be crazy to turn it down. Receiver is a relatively easy spot to find Canadians who can play (Kohlert and JFG are scrap heap guys), and Watson's value to our team is declining rapidly. We are desperately in need of Canadians who can play on D and OL, it might take moving out a guy like Watson to improve those areas, which IMO are more important, and more difficult to fill beyond the draft.
