Civic Election 2014

Recommended Posts

A little bit of talk in the Transit thread in the main Bombers forum.

Looks like Judy Washawasha is going to run.  I think she might be counting on the fact that much of what she said the city needed to do to move forward (raise taxes) that Sammy cried foul over, he ended up doing himself.  So she could run on the "I told you so" platform.  Also, with 2 or 3 right-of-centre candidates running, she might hope to split the vote.

On the other hand, she did surprisingly poor last election (pundits seemed to have the vote a lot closer than it turned out) and the plunging popularity of the NDP *should* hurt her.

Justin Swandel announced he wont seek relection, which is probably for the best.  I wonder if there is a sense of a changing of the guard coming and some of Sammy's friends are taking the opportunity to move on.

Paula Hvac seems the leading candidate right now.  A former Sammy ally, she's smartly taken the "I fought from the inside and was kicked out for being the voice of the people and we need more accountability" tact.

Im hoping that those 4 councillors who wont be back turns in to more, i really do feel its time for fresh new ideas across the  board at city hall.

I'm not convinced that the eventual mayor has yet to announce their name yet, talked to a few people and most are quite disgusted with everyone at city hall.

Hopefully a guy like harvey smith (the guy is so old its crazy) and whats her face, the anti everything, ahh yes gerbasi, they need to go too.

I think people are catching on to the fact that new blood is needed and i hope this is just the start..

I dont think people will vote  for Paula H, not the ones i have talked too at least, she has that stigma and sure she left but... at one time she was one of sammys inner circle buddies.

Honestly i think that teacher has a good chance right now, none of the actual candidates have said anything of substance just yet though so gotta see what they say first and then decide. I will vote in this next civic election and i hope everyone who does doesn't vote in the same councilor and mayor for that matter who is currently serving.

It's time for change. Big time.

Thomas Steen, very familiar with him, up until last year, he was my city councilor, i recently moved out of my parents house to just outside the city but.. steen is another that needs to go also. Has no business representing ek/elmwood. Lives in river heights and has no idea what the heck is going on over in this area, im close enough to ek still that i know what's going on there and thomas steen has no clue.

i;ve always liked Steen but the impression I get is he was just a figure head and doesnt really have the marbles to be an effective leader.

Paula is the leading candidiate in my opionion if only for the fact she's a right leaning politician and this is Winnipeg.  It might come down to Paula vs Judy and Paula will speak more to Winnipeggers than Judy and the stigma of the NDP will hang around Judy's neck.

but Im by no means an expert in civil politics.  Sammy still hasnt made his intentions clear but I cant see him running.  His chances are slimmer this time around and I dont think his ego will allow him to run and lose.  He'll pat himself on the back and announce he has "other interests".  He might throw his support behind Steeves who, last time I talked to him, seemed pretty dense.

Paula won't get more than 16% of the vote. Brian Bowman (the metis lawyer) is probably running 2nd in polls to Judy. At this point, the race has to be re-arranged (candidates dropping out and endorsing others) for Judy to get buried. Sam has really been put into a box - if he enters now he'll guarantee a Judy win. If he doesn't he'll give up a cozy job thats given him a ton of 'benefits' if you know what I mean?

At this point my best guess on vote percentage

Judy W - 44%

Bowman - 26%

Paula H -  17%

Steeves -  10%

others   -   2%

I think Sam won't give up the ghost quite yet. He will neither declare or quit. He'll make his play for the job if and only if Judy & Bowman screw up something fierce. He might plant some "bombs" into their campaigns and hope something bad happens. If it does - Sam may still enter! He's a slippery one and doesn't have a ton of respect for anyone, including citizens!

Thomas may have difficulty winning his own riding, given his legal troubles. He might not even slither by Walter "The Superstar" Shefchyk.

I've been away from Winnipeg for 24 years but I know Wasalyca-Lys or however you spell her name is running for Mayor again. She was in cabinet with Gary Doer when I lived in Winnipeg. Then she ran & sat as a federal NDP member in Ottawa. I absolutely HATE career politicians, especially socialist ones like her. For years up in Selkirk, they kept re-electing that useless **** Bill Blaikie. Same with Lys. There should be limits as to how long a politician can serve at any level to stop this career stuff & living off the taxpayer during their terms & then when they retire.

The argument against term limits is that if people dont like it, they can vote for someone else.  We know in thoery it doesnt work that way.  Its a double edged sword because sometimes you have someone good that you dont want forced out.  But usually people over-stay their welcomes.

Thing about Judy is, I agreed with some of what she was saying "in principle" and Sammy did to by how he embraced her ideas after he won.  She probably is the leading candidate and will have a lot of money and support.

I still have a feeling about Paula that she will be the front runner.  The last thing this city needs is a socialist Mayor especially with the provincial NDP on their last legs.

I agree about Selinger being an injured rodent with limited life. Those are the ones that usually fight to their death and there's signs Selinger has adopted the old "Brian Mulroney High Nose" pretending his crap don't stink and he's the king of the castle. But we all know this particular fascist is a dying rodent....

  • 3 weeks later...

Id strongly suggest that bowman is the leading candidate right now and with katz not seeking re-election, bowman is the guy the business community will get behind, part of the reason sammy isn't seeking re-election is because the business community is supporting bowman. Bowman should win this easily. I like the guy too. New blood.

Katz saw writing on wall. He had lost the support of business community to Bowman. Watch for Bowman vs Judy showdown this fall.

I think people are tired of career politicians running things, i think we see new blood across the board, from mayor (bowman) to new city councillors. I think the masses are tired of the same old same old. Judy is a career politician and i feel that people don't want that.
