It seems a lot of successful business owners buy sports teams to stroke their egos just like they'd buy expensive homes, boats & cars. We don't know Siegel's motivation. Just hope he becomes a good & responsible owner.

It’s obvious that Siegel had no idea he was buying into this situation. Braley’s quote is a concern about some teams being on the edge. You have to wonder if his is one of them. The privately owned ones are the obvious ones.

Truthfully, neither do you so please stop playing CFL Insider here, thanks.

You don’t have to be Warren Buffet to figure out that if each team paid over 600K to operate Montreal last season what a sound business opportunity that is and and VALUE of that business. No insider info required....business 001 in university.

It's absurd that a professional league penalizes the teams that win with more costs.  Playoffs should be a league cost entirely.

The CFL has a schedule to cover team expenses. A prescribed number of players and football ops staff that normally are road game staff, not the home game extra staff, It does not include taking PR players, injured players, management, scouting staff, office staff, board members and any expenses that are not considered required. If you win merchandise sales help cover off some of that expense. Go and lose and you are hooped.

Montreal has been sold and the new owner has said they're not going anywhere, and they'll be fine through the pandemic..... so there's that.

Lol......how many times did they say a sale was eminent? You have no idea what if anything they paid for the team. The other teams might have paid the owners to get them if the hook. As for what the owners said.....so there’s that.....is that like you can take that to the bank....lol.

  5. While there is a political element, it also can be viewed as a business decision. Is there a risk that even if the league limps through 2020... is 2021 a concern. Case in point the “ sale” of Montreal? It would be interesting to know what that netted? B.C. Is another concern as either the asking price is way out of line, given the market or the interest just isn’t there. Time will tell.

No, I don’t think so. If the CFL is a go, the public can visibly see just where the money is going.

Without playing games, the money disappears into a Profession sports league..

My point was....by not playing 2020... they have absolutely no exposure and no presence. The risk of that is people’s interest will fade....hence if you are out of site you start to be a forgotten entity and people’s money goes elsewhere.

  7. The premise of Hub sites works for the NHL because they are going to play in empty arenas. One of the reasons Florida and Arizona are under consideration. The CFL does not have that luxury. If Winnipeg was a host site are people going to show up and pay to watch BC vs Edmonton or Calgary play Sask. I’m not sure this is a very realistic plan?

He is going to lead their new CPL soccer team

Yes a team that was to start play on April 11th and as also suspended play. He is listed as a strategic partner likely financial liability. A good move in this financial climate for sports.

  9. Lots of businesses will close. But you are talking about a league where 3 teams were already money pits. This is a business that relies on disposable, discretionary income that has been significantly disrupted. A business that requires people in stadiums in close quarters in the seats and in the facilities. That in itself is a huge psychological barrier that all businesses need to try and overcome. Regulation and legislation aside people aren’t going to just going rushing back to stores or sports even if they have money to spend.

CERB gives employee's $2K per month for up to 4 months. The Canadian players should be eligible for that. American players are in Canada, paying taxes for half the year, maybe they should be eligible for $1K per month for up to 4 months. Offering the league minimum would be way more than other workers in Canada are getting for not working.

CERB....is one issue...does it cover contractual employees? The other major overriding issue remains the status of the CBA if the season is modified, postponed, cancelled , suspended....the wording of that is semantics subject to legal determination.

  11. I find the notion that 20% of 2020 salaries having been paid out seems high. Here is the irony of the situation...if it is in fact true ai would bet that a significant potion of that 20% has gone to a very very small portion of the players. Likely QBs and bigger name free agent signings. I guess the notion of not paying off season bonuses and signing bonuses in 2019 when there was no new CBA...was a lesson that was quickly forgotten.
The issue of “ cancelled, suspended or postponed season” is ultimately going to be a legal one decided by the courts. Call it what you like the reality of it is how it impacts the CBA and player contracts.

Ambrosie gets fingered because he's the Man In Charge. The face & the boss of the CFL.  It's certainly not the Board Of Governors. Most of us don't even know who they are.

You can either be the head of the snake or the tail being wagged by the dog. The Boss be it actual or perceived is the Boss, gets paid accordingly for that responsibility. Historically having to deal with the Governors hasn’t always been easy. Demonstrated by the frequent turnover in the position, be it voluntarily, or shown the door. In dealing with the government you still need to do your homework, be adequately organized and prepared in making your presentation. The indications are that was not the case. Hopefully the next pitch is a better one. You have one strike against you.

Perhaps egos are in evidence all over the place.

Why is it only Ambrosie who gets fingered?

Maybe, just maybe, the CFLPA had something to do with the un-united front.

    They have to get together...everybody.

If the CFLPA was not consulted before going to the government, and the a CFLPA said the CFL ended discussions you can draw whatever conclusions you like. It would seem that discussions involving  paragraph 16 perhaps spooked the league and created a perceived in pass.

  14. You can play whatever semantics game you like...clearly if it comes down to it the CBA and player contracts are going to come down to legal determination at some point. If you start any process without collective cooperation between the CFL and the CFLPA it certainly doesn’t sent a very positive image to anyone you are asking support from. A TEAM effort clearly wasn’t demonstrated and the perception of that hasn’t been encouraging. Get our act together !

Randy's first offer? Annoys the majority of Canadians.

It might annoy Canadians...it likely scared the crap out of the players. He presented the a CFL as a charity looking for a handout, not like a business organized with a strategy and a plan to move forward.
