  1. Fans hate Mack because they hear TSN, their local media & the national media following the CFL grinding on him all the time. Look at the negative reaction of that 52-0 loss on TSN & the things Schultz & Climie were saying about the Bombers. Well, that same feeling was prevalent here as well. That loss looked especially bad when you add it to the 6-12 season last year. Then Mack's firing of LaPo & the way it was handled, the beating we took in Regina the next week &  Mack refusing to talk to the media for 4 days after that loss turned media & fans against him. During the Stamps  broadcast last week one of the radio commentators said while discussing the loss in Hamilton, that the only way the Bombers will get better is if Joe Mack gets fired because he's the team's biggest problem. People in other cities hear that & believe what the media says. believe  me, Mack is not well liked & perceived as incompetent as well as aloof in other CFL cities.

I don't hate Mack.  I just don't think he's good at his job.  But that has nothing to do with what TSN or Paul Friesen tells me to think.

  2. Bolded part is pretty much true. but it isn't because of his "hard-line" negotiating. It's because he's seen as a tool who thinks his s#@t doesn't stink.

As to the other bit about you and Mike thinking the Bombers are strong everywhere except QB (i guess a long offseason makes painful memories easy to forget), i disagree vehemently... but won't bother getting into it since starting in a few days one or the other of us will have our case made for us.

I don't know Bluto.  Last time Buck Pierce played a full game the Bombers whipped on the Argos in their own barn.  Since we're talking about shaky memories after a long off-season and all.

Now you might say, "it was Ricky's first game back" or "we weren't playing well then" but at least from my perspective (I won't speak for Mike) that's the point.  With decent QBing (i.e. semi-healthy Buck) we can beat teams who are less than their best.  Meaning we are at least a 9 win team with adequate play from the QB position.

  3. This is touchy terrain and I more or less try avoid anything Joe Mack related so I'll say this.  If the Bombers were quarterbacked by Kevin Glenn last year they would have made the playoffs.  If we were quarterbacked by say Darian Durant this year we would be around .500 at least.   If we are quarterbacked 80% of the time by Buck Pierce this year we will be not half bad.

  4. So two disclaimers.  One is this may have been discussed elsewhere and two is I might get some of this wrong.  There have been a number of number changes post t.c.

    Washington goes to #7

Hall goes to #15.  Mike will need to know this for his new jersey.

    McGee goes to #20.

    Parker to #22

Dunn to #23.  Wasn't he #25 in the preseason?

Markett to #27.  I assume he bought Parker a Rolex or something.

    Harris down to #41

    Billy Alphabet is now #12

    Pendleton is #25.

There are few more guys who might have changed.  I don't remember Teague being #31 in the preseason, but not 100% on them.

Not one guy with a number in the 70's.  Not even as a tribute to John Konihowski.  Weird.

  5. There's not much to discuss about the LBers. Muamba is obviously not an issue, Bowman started as a raw rookie and no one seemed to care, with Parker he has a season under his belt and has looked good. Lack of experience doesn't mean it's a sore spot. Sears is hurt and has the ability to be a very good nickel. What exactly is the problem here?

    Not problem.  Problems.

Muamba was inconsistent last year.  Yes, he came on.  Yes, he's got a ton of potential.  Yes, he's Canadian.  Yes, I am seriously considering getting a Muamba jersey.    I'd like to see him in the right hole and taking the right angle to a running back more than two plays in a row.  He's got beast potential though for sure but comparisons to Willie Pless are premature.

Parker is taking over from a guy who was better than him.  So that's a downgrade until proven otherwise.

Sears had barely played a game at nickel in his life.  Last year, with him on the roster the coaches played 4 other players in that spot before him.  When they finally turned to him for the last few games he kept getting hurt (at least once on the opening kick-pff as I recall).  So any potential you see there is just that, something you see there.  Not something that is actually proven.  Plus, he's hurt and MecGee might be hurt and a guy we were all sure was going to get cut after being lit up in preseason could be starting there on Thursday.

So for Thursday it's backup or 3rd stringer playing beside semi-unproven guy coming off an injury playing beside recently promoted back-up.  That, my friends, is a question mark position.

disclaimer to the above- I realize the coaches played other guys at SAM last year because Sears was busy playing other positions well but still...

  6. yeah I would much rather have Kackert than Simpson.  :D

I get what you're saying.  I like Chad (ours) as much as anyone.  But one guy is running rampant in the Grey Cup game and one guy is limping around on a last place team.  That counts on lists like this.  Fair or not.

All the Bombers really need to do is win some **** and our players will be overrated on this kind of thing and other team's fans can do the moaning about it for once.

  7. There's another factor here.  If he suffers a relatively major injury and the season goes south while he's gone (actually if it goes north too) they might not go back to him when he's healthy again.

Let's say he's ready to come back from his latest major injury for Game 14 and the team is 4-9 at the time they may decide to move on and haver a longer look at whoever the saviour of the day is by then.  Or I suppose to be positive they could be 9-4 with Goltz leading the way and they decide to stick with Justin.

So the better question would be over/under how many games till he misses a start?  I say 4.

  8. There seems to be an inference here that because they didn't play any startes in last night's pre-season game that there's no reason to be pessimistic about our chances this year.  Which isn't true.  There's plenty of reason to be pessimistic about our chances this year.

  9. While I don't disagree that our record proved us to be the worst team in the league last season  .. I will offer one caveat .. we were decimated by injuries coming out of the gate and that played a large part in why our record was as bad as it was early last year.  That said, I do agree that it doesn't seem that we've found people to really push the imports we have on our roster .. if nothing else, the young guys who showed promise last year (Washington for example) will have another year of experience and SHOULD be more sound.

While I am disappointed by the loss last night .. I try to keep things in perspective .. it *IS* just a preseason game .. and by and large, completely meaningless .. though it would have been nice to see the team learning to win together before June 27.

Agree regarding last night.  As a stand alone it was meaningless.  If guys want to take my legitimate concerns and dismiss them because "I'm just some negatron overeacting to a a pre-season game" that's cool but the real games are about to start and if you feel optimistic about this year's team then God love ya.

  10. If you want to panic you could think of it this way.  We were the worst team in the league last year and none of our presumptive starters got beat out in training camp.  That includes rotation or backup guys who inherited their jobs from better players who left.  I guess you could say Hefney but let's be honest about what else is going on there.

And the strength of this regime is supposed to be finding import talent.  Did even one import rookie stand out in TC or the exhibition games this year?  I mean some guys did ok (Markett) but there were no "this guy is obviously going to play a long time in this league" finds this year.

Wirte off last night if you want.  I certainly undertsand the context of that score.  But remember this, those guys were the best Joe Mack could do to try improve this team.

Caveat to the above: I realize finally cuts haven't happened.  Maybe Jovon gets axed for Markett or something like that.

  11. It's like the Odell deal.  We'll have to bite our lips as he makes some big plays early on and the Bombers get ripped.  But in the end we know we're better off without him.

The thing is, and I think this is especially true the way sports are covered, the winners write history.  So if the Bombers suck again and the Stamps are good again the Hefney story will be jammed down our throats.  If the Bombers improve the coaches having the courage to cut Hef will be talked up way beyond its relevance.

  12. Good luck with that.  Even if Jade becomes a Hall of Fame receiver, the same whiners will always find a reason to whine about something.  It's called chronic inability to ever see a bigger picture.

Is the team going 6-10 again?  Because if so, yes I'll find something else to whine about.

I hope Jade does as well as you all think he will.

  13. I wonder if Hef was ever the same after the NFL fell through?  He wouldn't be the first to realize that the dreams of big money were never going to happen and take his foot off the gas a bit.  Anyway, I still thought he was pretty good.  But maybe a little bit of a cancer or at least bad influence in the room.

Good luck to the guy.  He was fun to watch.  I vote Edmonton.

  14. No I don't think that's what people are saying, I think what people are saying that once people figure out something that works there will be less issues because people will be trying new things to get there and will eventually stumble on something that works for them. I mean people had 50+ years to figure out how to get to Winnipeg Stadium at a time that worked for them.... They've had one week to find out what works getting to IGF and everyone is starting from square one.

I agree with the last 80% of your post.  It will get better and people will figure it out.  But I don't agree that people weren't saying leaving two hours early should be the solution.  Anyway, I'm sure it will be manageable at some point soon.  We need to get back to arguing about Joe Mack on here.

  15. Honestly guys, if your solution to the problem is people will get used to leaving two hours before game time then you're going to lose casual fans.  People will get used to watching the game at home on their 60 inch screens for 1/12th of the cost (chips and store bought beer) and devoting 7 to 9:30 to the game instead of 5 till 11:30.

Everybody has different life situations and I don't pretend to know yours.  Without getting into specifics the scenarios your describe wouldn't work for me.  Well, I would make them work because I am more than a casual fan but I can guarantee you my neighbours would be at home and people like my neighbours are the difference between 25,000 and 30,000.  Also known as the difference between paying off that 4 mill a year or not.

  17. The first Jets pre-season game was awesome.

I wasn't going to miss tonight.  I want to see the kids because I haven't got a chance to go to TC.  And I want to be in the stadium.  I need the practice too for traffic and shortest beer lines etc.

Not surprised it's not sold out.  One thing I did notice is most unsold seats are in the end zones.  I  have been saying since the price structure came out two years ago they screwed that up.  There are great seats in the upper deck with a much better view priced way cheaper then the end zone seats where you will really struggle for perspective.  I believe they way overvalued "lower bowl" status.  Maybe because of MTS Centre.  Maybe because of NFL stadia.

I would just way rather be on the 20 yard line in the upper deck then in row 9 behind the end zone.
