  1. Original Story Here

Three years after the first shovels broke ground, Winnipeg's newest architectural attraction -- with its distinctive canopies and trusses -- is finally ready for some football. Via the Winnipeg Football Club, here are some facts and figures on the new $200-million, 33,422-seat Investors Group Field at the University of Manitoba, the new home to the CFL's Blue Bombers and the Bisons (CIS):

    Canopies and trusses

    - Amount of area, in acres, covered by the canopies

80 - The percentage of coverage the canopies provide from rain, snow and sun

200 - The weight, in tons, of the two arch trusses that hold up the canopies

60 and 190 - The height and span of the trusses, in metres, making them the largest and highest in Canada

88,000 and 9,000 - The number of bolts, and ton sof steel, used in their construction

46 - Number of luxury suites, each equipped with outdoor, theatre-style seats, TVs, mini- kitchen facilities, and private washrooms

50 - Percentage increase in leg room

258 - Number of TV monitors throughout the stadium and concourse

28 - Number of washrooms, split evenly between the two concourses and men and women

Eight feet long, eight feet wide, five feet deep - Size of players' hot tub, which features underwater treadmill and has the capacity for an underwater bike

Student Section 2.0 - While there isn't a student section, per se, the Bombers are operating under the premise that Sections 138-143 -- a chunk of discounted seating in the north end zone -- will carry the old attitudes and enthusiasm of Canad Inns Stadium's most celebrated section.

  2. A couple of quick thoughts:

    * Ford and Simpson looked great out of the backfield.  Great burst and quickness;  the few reps I caught where Vonly was involved demonstrated he was *noticeably* slower than the other two guys.

    * Defense got the better of Clement today and batted a few of his passes down.  Didn't really do much to distinguish himself.

    * Renaud was easily the most consistent punter on the field.

    * Etienne didn't look out of place when running with the first team offense though McGee, at one point, stripped a ball from him (good play on the defense) and I question how he (Etienne) might fair against more physical DBs.

  3. Im most excited to see Hyde, Anderson, Davis then Harris in that order.

Id like to see both Davis and Harris stick with the club this year and get bigger and stronger for next season.

It will be interesting to see who stays on the active roster between Hyde, Anderson and Mainor.

I wouldn't be disappointed to see Mainor pushed off the roster.

Quick -- name the biggest free agent signing of the Joe Mack era.

    We kid.

It's a trick question, of course, because the Winnipeg Blue Bombers GM regards free agent signings the same way Lindsay Lohan regards rehab clinics -- a place to go when there is positively no where else to go.

But if you were going to make a list, you could make a case the biggest free agent coup of the Mack era isn't a player signing at all, but rather last winter's wrangling by Mack and head coach Tim Burke of Craig Dickenson as the Bombers new special-teams guru.

And you don't have to take our word for it -- here's how Bombers boss Tim Burke described Dickenson on Thursday.

"Watching him out there, he's so detailed, he's got it thought out so well. He's got a lot of experience in the CFL and the NFL. I think he just does a great job," said Burke.

  5. Burke is loving the running backs ..

ONE of the deepest positions for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2013 is at running back.

With their starting tailbacks from each of the last two seasons in camp -- Chad Simpson from 2013 and Chris Garrett from 2012 -- the Bombers are already spoiled for choice.

But making that decision even tougher is the presence of yet another talented tailback in Will Ford, who impressed in 2012 in his limited opportunities and continues to count head coach Tim Burke as a fan.

"He adds a different dimension -- he adds the home run ability," said Burke. "Chad and Chris are good inside running backs and powerful and all that. And Will is a guy who's a space player -- he's really good at open field...

"So that might be part of the formula -- maybe one of the power backs plays and the space player plays."

Burke was asked how hard it would be to keep Ford off the Bombers roster. "It's looking harder and harder, isn't it as you watch him out there." he said. "He's doing a great job. And he's a great guy, too."

  6. Posts are going to be deleted if this degenerates into a he said she said bashing / argument between the sites.

I really didn't think there was bashing of Colin going on in here.  Some posts that would have led in that direction have been removed.

We obviously had our reasons for splitting away and doing what we did, but we have decided not to air those reasons in public.  If you think what we did was trashy, you are entitled to that opinion, but realize you likely don't know the whole story or history involved.

The split happened, and our focus is now on this site and it's future. Dredging up the past won't benefit anyone.

    Hear hear!

  7. Problem I have with Mainor being involved in something like this that, at times last season, his play was also very undisciplined and it cost the team.  I have *ZERO* issue with intensity and emotion coming out during camp .. but I am a firm believer in "play the way you practice" and I'd rather that intensity be focused and directed.

  8. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed import linebacker Chad Faulcon.

Faulcon (6-0, 190, Montclair State, DOB: December 21, 1989 in Cranford, New Jersey) was a two-year starter for the Red Hawks, appearing in 40 games and registering 106 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, seven interceptions, 17 pass knockdowns, four forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick.  He was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference and D3 Football.com East Region’s Defensive Player of the Year as a senior as well as a Division III third team All-American.  He signed with the Atlanta Falcons last season but was released prior to their training cam

  9. I do think that injury history has an affect on a players draft position and I *do* believe that teams should consider a players history when making their selections.  That said, special players come along and the risk is worth the reward .. and with respect to some of the players we drafted this year .. we were able to get a guy like DiCroce where we did (great value) BECAUSE of his injury history.

  10. Seems like the message is starting to sink in for some of these guys.

"We came out here and showed what we had to do today... all the linemen wanted to fight us, so hopefully he'll see something on film that changes his mind," said Jonathan Hefney. "I feel like we've been doing it the whole time. But at the same time, he sees it, the film sees it... maybe a couple guys weren't running to the ball every single play.

'They aren't running hard enough. They're not getting to the football. They're not intense enough on the field. How is that possible?'

"But as we talked to the (other defensive backs) at the same time we told them, 'Just try to get to the ball and make a play. Give 100 per cent effort on everything you do and coach can't say too much, you know?' "

GARY Crowton’s crash course in Canadian football began a year or so ago, on the very day he was hired by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as their offensive co-ordinator.

But, his introduction to the game came decades earlier at a free-agent camp in Fresno, Calif.

"I had a tryout with the Saskatchewan Roughriders," said Crowton Tuesday as the Bombers training camp continued at Investors Group Field. "I was a young coach at Snow Junior College and I wanted to give playing one more shot. I can’t remember the year, early ’80s I guess, and it was a three-day camp. They cut after the first day and they cut after the second day. I made it through all those cuts and it came down to two quarterbacks: myself and Joe Paopao.

"They signed him and they told me, ‘Be close and if something happens to Joe Paopao, we’ll bring you up.’ Well, Joe played good forever and they never brought me up. Ever since then I’ve had an affection for the CFL.

"I remember it being fun in those workouts, I remember guys running all over the place."

    Continued at link ...

A couple of quick points in that article which lend some credence to the belief that protecting the QB will be a point of emphasis this season .. it also seems that both he (Crowton) and Buck are on the same page as well .. granted .. take Buck's opinion with a grain of salt given that Crowton played a large roll in why Buck is back .. but it speaks well for the offense that guys are buying in.
