The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger

I may be late to this but I heard they are doing a movie (movies?) version of Stephen King's The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger.  I've never read the books but wouldn't be against checking them out.  I've heard good things.  Has anyone on the board read them and if so would you recommend them?  I've read some King books (really enjoyed The Stand and Pet Cemetary among others) in the past.  Would the Dark Tower books be worth my time?

I never read the books, but i've always been a fan of Stephen Kings writing style. there's rumor this movie will be starring Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad, Triple 9) so thats a thumbs up from me, i like him as an actor

Paul has been linked to this movie for a few years now and he really wants to be in it.  He's had several meetings with the producers and directors in the past as well but there's been multiple changes on that end so the current director may have other ideas.  Matthew McConaughey & Idris Elba have already been confirmed for the movie.

Is Ron Howard still directing this?
