Its a useless stat. You get a minus if u are on the ice when a goal is scored against you. So.. Lets do an example to prove @blue_gold_84 point.

+/- is a real stat. Laine led the team last year. Was it coincidence? No, he was bad at playing D.

I'm not anti-Morrissey here. I think he's fine but maybe pair him up with Pionk ala Trouba if the others not working out.

Its a horseshit stat. It doesn't mean anything. A guy who just steps on the ice when a goal is scored gets a minus. It tells u nothing

It's not simply a matter of changing up the defense pairings.

+/- paints, at best, a blurry and incomplete picture. There's way too much variability in such a statistic, hence the criticism it's faced since it was first introduced and more so since analytics and possession metrics have been implemented. How is an arbitrary statistic like +/- a reliable way to assess a single player when there are typically five in total on the ice? If player A makes a mistake and it results in a goal against, players B through E all get a -1. That alone speaks to its flawed nature.

“[It is] the most useless statistic ever devised,” says Brian Burke, President of Hockey Operations for the Calgary Flames. “It’s pretty simple. If your team stinks, so does your plus-minus. And it’s compounded if you play against the opposition’s top players.”

Maybe, maybe not depending on the scenario.

Evaluation on players defensive game ultimately comes through game tape.

For sure and i think analytics plays a role. Personally i think some stats are flawed and i prefer the eye test.
